Exactly.

The only area I see the benefit is in gaming and even then it's marginal.

If Apple were putting all that power to good use I'd be truly impressed but they aren't.

Look at how much better the Note 8 multitasks vs. the latest iPhone 8 Plus:

All that power but it still is more or else performing comparably to the Note8, only winning convincingly in Gaming and a Benchmark, neither are Productive.
Apparently, you arent aware that Samsung has the DeX workstation for their phones. I have one, and more or less, it turns the phone into a desktop computer. A very basic desktop computer, but none the less, its way more productive than using a phone.

I could only imagine how good it would be if the Note8 has a processor as powerful as the A11. Imagine Dex with an amazing processor.

Errrmmm, Snapdragon and Exynos handle DeX brilliantly. I got my DeX on Saturday and the only thing missing is more apps that support it, the CPU themselves run it beautifully.

The A11 is a great chip at running benchmarks, but what is needed for DeX is a chip that stays cool for longer and doesn't require heavy throttling. Both the 835 and 8895 do well there.

Samsung DeX sets the S8, S8+ and Note8 apart from everything else on the market, after having used my Note8 with DeX I simply won't be able to take other phones that don't support this sort of computing seriously, the iPhone looks like a toy to me at this point, with its already limited phone OS despite a chip that runs benchmarks so well.

What evidence is there that a11 throttles?

While dex seems like a great feature .. for me at least if I am on the desktop, I would want something that speeds through photo editing in Lightroom (raw photos) and video editing. The a10x in the iPad Pro wipes the snapdragon in performance with no hint of throttling. The difference is like 2-3x faster in photo editing and 4x faster in video editing.

Other people’s use case will vary of course

Nobody said it throttles, what I said is that the Snapdragon and Exynos run it well and maintain performance.

From what I have seen of the A11, is great benchmark scores but in real world usage no actual benefit.

Interesting that you have to compare a Tablet SoC to that of mobile phones though, goes to show where things are. With DeX I can get quite a lot of work done and not have to lug around a laptop. A big thing with DeX on the Note8 is the 6GB RAM, that helps keep tons of apps going and keeping things running smooth.

Okay, maybe I should rephrase what is being said. Is it fair to say Qualcomm is letting Android down in comparison to the A series team and iOS?

In a sense I agree. I just think Apple designs chips to fit Apple products.

Qualcomm makes chips and is perfectly happy if those chips are in refrigerators, washing machines and android phones. It’s a different business model.

Qualcomm also has a de facto monopoly due to patents. That doesn’t put pressure on the Qualcomm to make a better product.

There is no one else for android device makers either, something we learned with the Snapdragon 810 debacle. That chip was so bad Samsung used exynos in their S6 instead. All other android flagships were ruined.

That is such a sad truth.

This is why Samsung and Huawei standout so much as both do their own chips. People tend to forget that Huawei for their top end devices uses their in-house Kirin chips.

The 810 debacle was an eye opener, luckily Samsung had their own chips and so did Huawei, everyone else had to find all sorts of ways to cool the 810 or go with the inferior 808.

There is another chip maker we are forgetting and that is MediaTek, they seemed to be on a roll for a few years and now seem quiet, are they just supplying low end chips now? They seemed to be gunning for Qualcomm at some point and we're getting OEMs like Sony to buy their chips, albeit for mid end and low end products.

In terms of CPU speed, the A11 should be a bit faster than the a10X unless it throttles which I don't know if it does - so for all those tasks the a11 should be 2-4X faster than the snapdragon.

But of course all that power is wasted on an iphone as I wouldn't want to edit photos on a phone. Can't wait to see what an a11X can do on the next ipad pro though :)

Sorry dex does not look like the future to me.
The concept of a mobile device is to be mobile, not tethered to a desk using a keyboard monitor and mouse setup straight from the 90’s.

Don’t the apps have to be coded for dex?
Like that’s going to happen.

I agree, that just like Microsoft Continuum, I can't see the benefit of DEX. When you have to connect keyboard, mouse, monitor etc. You might as well either lug around a laptop or use some kind of remote desktop solution.

But regards to Apps being coded for DEX, I don't see a problem. Android has supported external keyboard and mouse since forever and supporting all kind of display formats. So apps scaling to tablet size can already function like decent computer apps. Also Chromebooks with keyboard and mousepad are getting Android support, so I don't see a lack of apps being developed for keyboard/mouse interface.

How many apps are dex enabled?

I don't know anything about special requirement for DEX. Don't have a Samsung, never have.

But I used a keyboad+mousepad cover for my Android tablet 2years ago and many apps could already be used like an laptop. Especially office apps.

Yup it has to be dex enabled.

“Not all apps will work properly and some won't even launch at all. My favorite app, Pokemon TCGO, doesn't work on Samsung DeX because it requires touch input (by comparison, the Android app works fine with the mouse or touch input on the Chromebook Flip). Spotify won't work either, and DeX will tell you it's because it wasn't optimized for multiple screen sizes (you can't launch into the browser version of the web app either). I also found that some apps aren't even worth using on DeX because they won't work in the background, like some of my favorite indie music radio apps put out by smaller developers who probably didn't even consider that this was a thing to develop for.”
