I seriously dont know what else to do, if I take it to Apple they'll update and ruin my unlock and I wont have a phone, and my only other option is to buy one off craiglist, which the least I can find is $250 for another 2G.

I watched the entire video, and he only stressed it at the part when you take th LCD off, is that the most difficult? Cause if you have to do it gently, it doesnt look THAT bad...

All I need is the glass part repaired, it works fine, I just need the glass replaced.

wooow that's rough. you're lucky the glass is all that was damaged.

definitely take FCP.guru.guy's advice. you could save $$ over getting a new 2G. there are many 'mail-in' glass replacement services and it might be cheaper since you don't need the digitizer...

if you feel comfortable with the install, why don't you just buy a crappy iPhone that doesn't work and steal the glass out of it - i'm sure you could get that maybe 30$ less than a non working iPhone

this might also be a good time to get a cheap AT&T phone and unlock so you can get a cheaper data plan (if you are that kind of guy). i unlocked+jailbroke but i chose to still pay 20$/month out of character!

How much is it to just order the glass piece? And where? All the cheap phones on craiglist look exactly if not worse than mines.

There are many places that sell just the Digitizer. Here's a link. I think the Digitizer should be about $50. That's my estimate. Don't get anything over $100 because you could just send it in for that.

I could pull $300 out now since I sold some things, would it be better to just get a 3G off craiglist? I know about the new damn iPhone and honestly, I don't care about it. The one thing I will pick up that i really need is GPS.

I would buy it from Apple or a certified reseller if I were you. You don't run the risk of it not working then having to ship it back and waiting at least a week to get your money back if the seller even cooperates. If you want to keep the 2G then keep it and repair it but if you would rather have a new (or used) 3G then buy one. It's ultimately up to you.

David

I can't buy it from Apple, I have to unlock it. Even so, they wouldnt give me one with an upgrade without forcing me onto another contract.

A girl offered her's for $325, but she seemed to stupid to know how to go to the settings and read off the modem firmware number to me. I gave up.

im pretty sure that for the 2g u must buy a digitizer plus LCD.. I dont think that you can replace each one seperately.. and the videos online are quite deceiving.. i had a pain in the ass of a time replacing the digitizer on the 3g.. effin sticky tape.

I'm going to get a screen protector, even my mom suggested it...

I think I do remember them being glued together but I think that was the glass and touch panel, I'm not quite sure anymore.

Get a case to. I prefer the hard cases and not the soft rubber/silicon ones because they feel better in my hand but it's whatever you prefer. Just a screen protector won't prevent another cracked screen.

David

Alright, I have a rubber case for my current to cover some of the screen to the small pieces don't start falling out. But I'll look into a hard case. If a screen protector wont then I dont see the point, I guess its all about being mindful and not going to the gas station and being half asleep.

Lack of GPS has been killing me here in Midtown atlanta, so hopefully i can benefit.

My roommate did the same thing to his, only his chunks of glass aren't fine but rather are larger. That is the only part that I think you will have a problem with is removing the digitizer since it is glued (rather a pain to remove) to the glass, those small chunks won't be fun.

I hope he lets me do the repair. Looking on eBay, the front panel's aren't that expensive. $30+/-.

The purpose of the screen protector is to prevent scratches but I don't think you are very worried about scratches seeing how you have a cracked screen. If you want to lay a screen protector over the broken glass to prevent the pieces from falling out, I think you would benefit from that until you replace the screen or get a new iPhone.

To complete the repair, I believe you have to take apart the iPhone in order to connect the ribbon.

Meh, you were right. There's no way I'm going to find one for that cheap, lowest I'm finding in $400 ($475 unlocked, no surprised). It's not like I have to have it, priorities first and that's getting this phone fixed, and worry about anything else after college.

I'm just going to grab this 16GB 2G for $180, dude got a blackberry storm. At least I'll have a bit of cash left over.

Thanks for the help.
