Why do you say it doesn’t seem like many app developers have shown interest when the phone isn’t even out?

It’s very similar to the 4.7” vs 5.5”. Actually in terms of the UI, the pixel width of the 4.7 is identical to XS and 5.5 is identical to XS Max.
I am basing that opinion on the iPhone/iPhone+ apps. It seems like Apple provided nice examples with dual-pane Settings, Mail, Messages, etc., and I’m not aware of similar extensive implementation by 3rd party developers (at least with any apps I use regularly).

Don't get me wrong - I have a Max on the way and I'm excited for the larger screen. I'm miffed off the bat with no landscape home screen and I'm sure that's coloring my opinion at the moment.

I can't find it now, but I read in a Macrumors story that said that people just wanted larger image/fonts on the XS Max, so this is why the home screen looks zoomed-in in PR photos and why the rest of Apple's native apps are just zoomed in.

Can 3rd party developers take advantage of the larger screen? Sure, and some may, but I find it troublesome that Apple won't, this sends a HUGE signal to developers that it's ok to just zoom their apps on the new device.

All this means is, if you watch netflix or youtube, sure, you'll enjoy the larger screen. For the rest of iOS, you'll have very little advantage if any with regards to more information density. Personally it's a big let down and will skip the phone instantly.

I have a MAX coming friday, but if i don't see more ACTUAL information on the screen, it's going back. The one thing I really didn't like about the original X (which I returned) is that with the larger screen compared to a 7/8, it really didn't show much more information on the screen. That is just a waste. I want MORE INFORMATION on the screen.
Please let me know if there’s more information on the screen once you receive it :)

I really hope that it isn't just a zoomed screen. That defeats the purpose for me. I would like more information to be displayed because of the added screen real-estate.

Uh, you’ve ignored the numerous posts indicating otherwise in this thread.

Take a look at the screenshots from this thread. The X DOES show more info than the 7/8.

The X compared to a 7/8, it was like 1 row. 1 row of text. The width was the same even though based on screen resolution it appeared that one should have been able to optimize and allow text and onscreen objects to scale wider. But it doesn't

the X shows about what an 8+ shows, 8+ maybe again a tad TALLER, but again no WIDER. I wish a larger phone would just take advantage of the full resolution. but, as that great post above of all the phone icons and resolutions show - the WIDTH of many are all identical, so things won't WIDEN really at all.

The Xs MAX DOES look like we'll finally see some TALLER real estate to take advantage of, so more info WILL be on the screen. If we can just get comfortable with the size. Granted Xs MAX seems to be just SLIGHTLY smaller in form factor to the 8+ FF, I think the Xr might be a real sweet spot though.

Great pic. I’m going to steal it too. Note though the pic is misleading. Those pics do accurately show the amount of screen info displayed but the actual relative screen sizes are not correct.

For example, the Xr and XS Max do indeed display the same amount of screen info but the Xr screen size is 0.4” smaller.

Here is another good site:

https://www.paintcodeapp.com/news/ultimate-guide-to-iphone-resolutions
that 2nd site is a GREAT representation.

For real? You spent that amount of $ on a phone without knowing this information?

The X/XS are similar in physical width and screen width to the 4.7" iPhone, hence the UI having the same width in terms of point resolution. Difference with the X/XS is that they gained vertical resolution. They do show much more information on screen compared to the 4.7" iPhone.

The Max will be very similar to the 5.5" Plus in that regard. Same point width for the UI, but a good increase in vertical screen real estate.

I am basing that opinion on the iPhone/iPhone+ apps. It seems like Apple provided nice examples with dual-pane Settings, Mail, Messages, etc., and I’m not aware of similar extensive implementation by 3rd party developers (at least with any apps I use regularly).

I bet the lack of home screen landscape is related to Face ID only working in portrait. Either way though, I used both 4.7" iPhones and Plus iPhones for 3 years - I can't recall an app being updated for the 4.7" screen and not also being optimized for the 5.5". I have confidence we'll see apps optimized for the Max as well.

Seriously - I feel like it's been spoken about so much at this point over the past week how the different resolutions will work and how the Max vs XS is like the Plus vs 4.7 in terms of screen real estate. Not sure how everyone is missing this.

Your idea of '1 row of text' differs from mine.

Well, clearly it depends on the app and the site. but, was that above comparison between an 8+ (or similar other) and an Xs MAX? that is certainly better.

The comparison I was making above about 1 row of text (clearly it's not always one row) was an 7/8 form factor and an X. Some sites (check out the other thread) showed about a line. some a bit more (could be a graphic not a row of text). I would have simply expected a much larger and better optimization of space, vertical AND horizontal. Hopefully, the Xr and/or Max will offer us that.

It's an 8 and a X.

Can someone please post some screenshots of the Xs vs Xs max while browsing in safari and not the 8pls vs x? This topic is going off topic now. We know the xs and Xs max is vertically and horizontally the same, but the question is if everything is just enlarged on the xs max or if it’s a bit expandable within the screen to show more information. Like a MacBook 13 va 15 inch. Sorry, it’s not meant to be directed towards you, but it seems like people don’t completely get what some of us are concerned about.

The thread is going off topic?

Its been said how many times in this thread, including with photos and examples how the XS Max has more real estate than the XS.

The XS and XS Max are NOT vertically and horizontally the same. They have the same aspect ratio, but the Max is significantly larger and has more screen real estate. It's not just a blown up version of the XS.

Heck, just cropped this from a response on the first page:

But is this confirmed? Are those actual screenshots?

Nilay Patel, in The Verge video review, says that certain apps show the same amount of information on the Max, just bigger (he cited Gmail and Slack):
(start at 2:20)

Presumably this might change as apps are optimized, as discussed above? Or might not...

Excellent article.

ie. Don’t criticize Apple and the developers for the Max not having universal app support last week during the reviews, considering the phone isn’t even out yet.
There's a beta program. Maybe it's just too complicated to get beta apps on the phone for reviewers, but that kinda would be on Apple. I'd bet there are plenty of apps ready.

The Xs Max (or maybe Xr) with Zoomed Display mode would be perfect for you.
There is NO Zoomed view mode on the X series, wasn't available on the X last year either. It has to do with the higher resolutions of these phones and the funky aspect ratio. It is only available on the standard 8, 8+ and below.

they’re generated from within Xcode for different devices. I mean, if we’re still questioning how legit this is I don’t know what to say anymore.

What a thread.

It is available on the Xs Max. Already confirmed by Apple itself in their online iPhone help manual. Not yet confirmed by Apple for the Xr but the manual doesn’t cover the Xr. However it is likely the Xr is also supported since iOS 12 has references to Zoomed Display mode for both the Xs Max and the Xr.

NOT supported on the smaller X or Xs though. That is also confirmed by Apple. There also are no references in iOS 12 for Zoomed Display mode for the X or Xs either.
