A 12.9 iPad Pro is too big for the bed, more for the desk/tabletop. When I had the original iPad Mini and Mini with Retina, those were perfect one-handed.

Having 10.5 iPad Pro, 12.9 iPad Pro Gen2, and now 12.9 iPad Pro M1, the 10.5 was still a little big for the bed.
Fun Fact: All iPads of all Size (even the mini)are meant to be used more often in desk/coffee table than iPhones.. and unlike iPhone 13 Pro Max can be used completely one handed without using your left hand.

I use the M1 12.9 iPad Pro one-handed, especially if I use it as a sheet of paper to write some stuff with the Apple pencil.

All iPhones of all Size even the iPhone 13 Pro Max can be used one hand completely via Thumb only without the help of your left hand.

In my case I can grip iPhone completely (one handed) to text using one thumb only for most of the time, but i rarely use two thumbs to type on my iPhone 13 Pro Max via portrait mode.

On my iPad Mini 6, it feels much lighter to hold than iPhone 13 Pro Max maybe because of how its built? But the way i hold my iPad Mini 6 is very impossible, like the way i grip my iPhone 13 Pro Max completely which covers all the entire body 100% front and back, but the Mini 6 my hand only covers like 100% in the back but ONLY 23% at the front..

I also dont understand why the biggest iPhone 13 Pro Max is much easy to grip than iPad Mini 6 even they are almost the same weight. While walking in the public my left hand is always on the pocket while my right hand is completely gripping the iPhone 13 Pro Max texting on it via right thumb only which is seem like impossible to iPad Mini 6..

The funny thing is i tried holding iPad Mini 6 same way with my 13 Pro Max but my right thumb cannot reach the other side. Without the help of the left thumb. Or left hand..

For me, as breathtaking as the 12.9" is (you really do have to experience it in person), it was just a bit too clunky for me and I returned it. Mostly that came down to the aspect ratio. It was just too big and tall and the black bars on video were a bit comically big.

if they bumped an 11" up to 12" and kept the 11"'s wider aspect ratio, it would display video at the same size as the 12.9" due to smaller black bars, and it would save quite a bit of size, weight and heft. Give this theoretical device a mini LED display and a centred camera in landscape and I daresay it would be the iPad to end all iPads.

Video consumption is only one of many many uses though.
For app use the size is great.

I can't deny that, but for me that extra height pushed it just a bit too far in the size and weight direction for not enough benefit. And the 11" is just a bit too small. I think a sweet spot would be a 12". And with rumors of them making a 16" iPad Pro, I wonder if they might bump up the size of the other pros in the lineup next time.

As I said before though, it is breathtaking, and I will miss it a bit.

The screen on the 12.9 is so nice compared to the 11 inch. But the 12.9 just seems to want to flip backwards when it’s on my lap while I’m sitting on the toilet.

I have 10.5 inch pro since 2017. Chose it over bigger brother for the sake of better portability. Nowadays frequently I feel the need to use it as a secondary monitor, means bigger the better. Didn't have to rely on ipad for this kind of mission back then. BTW, I'm not a fan of the aspect ratio as well.

No, it would not be the same size of the 12.9. You basically need a 16:9 aspect ratio on a 12" screen for that. At 16:10 you would need between 12.3 and 12.4in. And the ratio of the 11" it's not even 3:2, it's wider. So it would be much closer than you think to the size of the 12.9...

Holding them side by side, it'd be close enough for me. Note I'm not talking about the screen size exactly, but the size of video minus the black bars for most common video content.

That's what I am talking about. I tested it on a 12" 3.2 which is actually wider than the 11" pro and the video is 11.5". It would be smaller on a 12" screen with the 11" pro aspect ratio, I'd say between 11.3 and 11.4 vs 11.9 to 12" for the 12.9" pro.
That that is close enough for you it's a different story, and it's fine, but the video would be over 0.5" smaller than on the 12.9" pro.

Good to know. I think the extra portability would be worth losing that much of the size of the video. That is my ideal tradeoff anyway.

I suppose we will just have to see if they stick to the same size and aspect ratios next time, or if the rumored 16" iPad Pro might signify a shakeup in the lineup. Could be 10.9" base model, 11" Air, 12" iPad Pro, 14" iPad Pro, and the 16" beast.

Phone in the toilet is one thing. But a 13” iPad on your lap while taking a dump?

8" tablets are the perfect size for me going forwards. I have tried the others and still have an 11" but they are too big & heavy to hold for long periods. Obviously if you're sat at a desk and using a magic keyboard then the bigger the better but on the couch and in bed? 8" all the way.

A lap pillow designed to hold tablets is great. I love mine.

I find the 12.9 to be too heavy and a bit awkward since I just use if for consumption. The larger keyboard is the only feature I find to be a big advantage, not having to constantly switch keyboard modes to press certain keys. The display may be better but I really don't see it on a daily basis comparing it with my other iPad Pro 11" which is 2 generations older.

I have a 12.9 and a Mini. I don’t use my 12.9 in bed unless I’m using it as a laptop with a keyboard. The only time that it’s not propped up on some sort of stand or in a mount is when I’m using the Pencil. Then I cradle it in my arm or rest it on my lap. I don’t think those are very ergonomic positions, so I only do it for shorter periods or when I have to (no table is available). For touch screen casual consumption, I much prefer my iPad Mini as it’s much more comfortable to hold for longer periods, often with one hand (with a Pop Socket). I find even a 10” iPad too uncomfortable to hold for very long.

The iPad Mini is obviously much wider than an iPhone Max, but with a Pop Socket, I’m able to use my iPad Mini very much like a large phone (quasi one-handed). It doesn’t let me reach the entire screen with my thumb, but at least enough to scroll and turn pages, which is about how I’d use a large phone without a Pop Socket. With a large phone without a Pop Socket, you can do the whole balance-on-fingers thing, but that’s often impossible when you’re lying down. I’ll use my Mini one-handed for long stretches with the Pop Socket. For me, it’s the only iPad light enough to comfortably hold for a long time.

I do wish the Mini was narrower though, like the dimensions of the old Nexus 7, so that I can handle it and carry it around the home more easily. Or I wish iPhone Plus/Max was at least an inch bigger in diagonal and could function exactly like an iPad when used as a secondary device (it is not designed to be a secondary device, so it doesn’t have full Continuity functions), then I would get one of those as my “iPad Nano” for home. (I like a small phone when I’m out.)

I’ll chime in here. 11 inch is definitely the way to go for comfortability and ease of handling. I have both, iPad Pro sizes and hands down, I’d go with the smaller form factor. Keep in mind, I have Otterbox d3fender cases on both sizes and the 12.9 becomes a literal beast in terms of size when encased. But I’d rather that than dropping it…lol. Warranty recently up on both devices and out of pocket cost for shattered glass is untenable. Also, a badly scratched/scuffed iPad is unseemly and commands much less when/if reselling. The 12.9 gets heavy when handling for any extended period. And like mentioned earlier in the thread, many of us have had the iPad fall on our faces in bed when fatigued sets in. Not a pleasant experience. 12.9 for productivity at the table or on couch, but 11 in for the bedroom.

haha nothing that person said made sense. Their previous post said iPads can be used with one hand while the 13 Pro Max can’t.

They also said the 13PM can be used one handed to get everything done. While true if you are a contortionist, definitely not practical for most people. Most are going to engage their second hand.
