You're all right

Yep you've all convinced me...the 24" it is...size DOES matter! Just as soon as I can scrape up a few more $$!

I sort of had that impression. They have them lined up at teh apple store. Large, Extra Large, adn Supersized. But their proportions are all the same, so it's almost as if they're the same. Except when you get close to the screen, and open up something like safari. It takes up maybe one third of the screen. Just a ton of screen real estate. Then I realized how large it was.

I'm not saying it's "too big"--it depends on your needs and space. But it's sizable, and probably a premium for a larger monitor than most people need.

Hehe

I should probably point out that I don't actually own a pair of red thigh-high boots. Sorry boys. Well they're actually more burgundy than red... ;)

It arrived today so has not been unpacked.

She used to think the 23" LCD was too big, I am SURE she is going to think this one too big.

Doesn't matter, it will be mounted on a arm so she can swing it out of her way. :)

No way... The 24" iMac is stunning. It is the kind of thing that will be a conversation piece in your living room. Seriously, pictures don't do it justice. Go check it out at your local CompUSA or Apple Store. :D

OK, went to CompUSA and they were JUST setting up the 24"... I mean the box was on the floor and they were running whatever setup applications CompUSA uses to get the systems setup with stock crap.

It's too big. I'm being serious. It LOOKS great, but it's too big. It would be cumbersome to use, the 20" is honestly, in my opinion, the ideal size. The 17" is a big rinky-dink, the 20" is a perfect compromise between size and usability, and the 24" is a monster.

That's just my opinion, of course, but even if it was in the budget (and it just about is) I don't think I would buy it. If they put the 24" iMac internals in a 20" case (or better yet a headless box) I would look at it, but I can't see much of a need for the 24" other than status symbol.

If you are doing serious video/layout work and need that screen space, you're better of with a Mac Pro, and if you're not the 20" is much more practical... ah well, seeing the improved quality of the 20" iMac screen since the last time (Rev A G5's) I looked convinced me I want one instead of a new mini+my Dell 19".

You can always wall-mount the Mac to make it less obtrusive (buy the VESA kit plus a VESA wall mounter).

It's very hard to judge what would freak your spouse out though :)
Unless Apple released a new VESA kit for the iMac and I missed it, the iMac VESA kit only fits the first gen G5 iMacs (pre iSight).

Me too. Plus it is good to know that you save 500 dollars by not getting the 24

Yes, but not necessarily ENOUGH better to justify the higher cost of a Mac Pro + display.

Also, there are non-pro uses for big screens: movies, TV and games :)

Dimensions of just the front

OK I'm making a cardboard mockup as some have suggested. Can anyone tell me what the dimensions of just the front is? From the apple store I can see the overall dimensions are approx 22.5W x 20.5H x 8d. I assume this is the dimension of the overall unit including the foot. The width would be the same but what is the height of the unit from bottom of the chin to the top of the computer (not the screen, the whole face front)?

Looking at the 20" vs the 24" it is just two inches wider and taller....so all I have to do is convince the wife is that 2" isn't *that* different...
