For years while I was using macOS I used the default Mail app. It served my needs very well and I almost never had problems with it. It's a solid app.

Just tried to go back on Apple mail, but it won't save my smart mailboxes (after every restart they dissappear and there is only default Today smart mailbox). Googled a bit, seems like a common problem with no solutions so far (Mojave 10.14.6). So now I'm trying Airmail first.

I use Microsoft Outlook but only because I have an O365 account that I want to use. Apple Mail works also with O365 though, but I prefer the functionality of Outlook. The same applies also on iOS and iPadOS. For people that just want a good mail client, Apple Mail is more than enough though.

I primarily use Outlook but it has some weaknesses that require Mail.

1. You can’t share files from finder or the photos app to Outlook. Only to Apple Mail.

2. Mail handles plain text emails better than Outlook.

I use Apple mail app for my private account and MS Outlook for my business account. Both work perfectly for my needs.. That's all I need :)

Windows Outlook for your business?

I used Mail since 2005, but recently switched to Spark and never looked back.

I got a new iMac recently and decided to keep to a minimum the number of apps that I loaded onto it. So I switched from Chrome to Safari and from Outlook to Apple Mail to see how well they would perform.

So far, the change has been seamless and I haven't seen a need to download third party versions of these apps. These days all browsers have much the same capabilities, as do most mail readers.

Well Outlook does have more features but Apple Mail handles plain text emails better.

Well, actually I have returned to using the Mail.app on macOS, mainly because of its better OS integration. Another thing that bothers me in Outlook is that is the way it integrates calendar and tasks and contacts. I prefer the calendar.app on macOS, so it just makes sense to use Mail instead of Outlook..

On iOS Outlook has so many regressions, that it just doesn't make any sense at all to use it (no support for Time zones in calendar, contact sync support basically not existing, no notifications for mails that get delivered to subfolders)

I dumped Apple Mail since it keeps opening on its own for some reason. I use Outlook 2016 nowadays, especially since I am using Office 365 Business Essentials (Exchange) for my hosted email. I still use Mail on iOS though since I don't have problems with it there.

Just dumped Apple Mail.

Actually, it kind of dumped me after the Catalina upgrade (not an uncommon problem; it disappeared some local foldters). So it was just easier to go to another program. The structure of Apple Mail makes it kind of tough to fix.

Also, Apple changed how Spotlight indexes email, so that the third party applications I use could no longer access email. Ugh. Kind of wrecked integration across my application workflows where I use searching to gather say a diverse bunch of files, including emails, together.

So I went to MailMate, and love it. More control. And it's been more reliable, and frees me from having to deal with OS update issues (I'm trying to avoid using any application that can't by itself be updated or not updated independently of a system software update).

I still use iOS Mail though; have had far less problems with that client than the macOS client.

I'm using edison mail on macOS and IOS as of now, tested many apps for mail and used to love airmail, but it changing to a subscription was unacceptable after i already payed for it.

Mail works just fine for me in Catalina.

You people got it all wrong! Nothing beats AOL Mail!

I'm happy with Apple Mail for my most important accounts. For "junk subscription accounts", I would rely on some free mail service like Outlook (Microsoft) or Gmail (Googly).

And for some reason, my Apple Mail account only rarely gets hit with random junkmail/spam. The free services like Hotmail and Gmail tend to be much larger targets for scammers, spammers and junkmail bots.

I use my custom domain with a ProtonMail paid account and I am pleased with how it works. Works well on my MBP and Samsung phone. I have found their customer support to be very responsive, friendly and effective.

Oops...sorry about messing up your post. My reply went wonky.

I use Apple mail, and have been ever since it launched.

I have been happy with it, other than it sometimes label mail as "junk" from addresses that I have been receiving mail from for many years. All of a sudden, the mail app would decide it is junk.

Overall it is good, but the only other mail app I have used recently was Outlook.
Same issue here. All off a sudden mail from people in my contacts or even marked as VIP ends up in the junk folder. I don't have any junk rules set up and tried putting those mails back in my inbox, but mail simply doesn't learn.

Apple Mail worked flawlessly for a decade (business only: ~ 10 accounts with > 150.000 emails). But then Apple disimproved it:

The first issue was, when they introduced the "choose best account" and on the same time removed the option "ask each time". This led to mails being sent from the wrong account. As a work-around for many years I then used a non-working account with no SMTP entry as the "standard account", which would force me each time to choose the correct one (thereby mimicking the dropped "ask each time" option).

The second issue, introduced with Catalina, has made Mail unusable. Because of my many accounts I need both address columns, the "From" and the "To". The most ridiculous outcome of dropping the columns is that in Smart Mailboxes the sent emails, which you can include to be shown, also show the "From" address – which is of course me – instead of the recipients address. So Smart Mailboxes are completely useless when including sent emails. How can such an error happen? Does nobody at Apple use Smart Mailboxes?

I switched to MailMate a month ago and I'm very happy with it. It does not solve my problem though with my colleagues at work which are just average computer users – they don't get MarkDown (even with the live preview below).
