As we all saw yesterday Apple will release a new iMac. The iMac Pro! With amazing specs. Personally I think that Apple will no longer invest any time or money in a new Mac Pro.
The Mac Pro 2013 was the last one. It ended yesterday!

I believe the original plan was to have the iMac Pro replace the Mac Pro any the top of Apple's Mac lineup, but they had their "Come to Jesus" moment in April and committed to a new Mac Pro. They also released a formal PR statement yesterday re-confirming their commitment to a new Mac Pro (as well as a new standalone display).

So - "no". :)

Link? I don't see it at https://www.apple.com/newsroom/ ....

And in any event, "re-confirming their commitment" means that they're saying now (today) that Apple intends to make a new MacPro and display.

In December, they could release a PR statement saying "based on the overwhelming response to the new iMac Pro - we're re-evaluating the market demand for a new Mac Pro". In June they announce the upgraded iMac Pro, along with

If most of the potential market for the mMP will have already purchased iMac Xeons and Z-series, Apple's not going to tool up a production line for a system doomed before launch.

It doesn't mean that they're lying now - it just means that in mid-2018 it may be apparent that a new Mac Pro makes no business sense. Even if the design is done and the prototypes are great - if it doesn't make business sense they will kill it.

Thanks - I missed that sentence.

And it says "is working on" a new Mac Pro and display - which is far, far from committing to delivering a new Mac Pro and display.

This only confirms my comments that Apple can drop either or both if they don't make business sense, and the language of the press release is written to allow that.
sure, there's a possibility it won't actually happen.

though the general outlook amongst the user community at this point is leaning towards optimistic..
for a change ;)

There is still possibility that the new modular Mac Pro will never be realized. However, since Apple made the statement about Mac Pro in a press release for iMac Pro, you can't say they are not serious about it. If they are not, why say so in a press release? Why do it in a way that it may damage iMac Pro's sale?

I will give Apple that credit and believe that Apple is seriously working on a new Mac Pro. Whether we will actually see a new Mac Pro in 2018/2019 remains to be seen, but people's optimism at this moment is very justifiable.

I think Apple will definitely release a new Mac Pro.
Sadly, like the iMac Pro, I think it'll be ridiculously expensive and so will not be a success.
Mac Pros to some are 'workstations' designed to take on their powerful PC counterparts in large professional environments and be used in render farms etc, but for many others (like me) a Mac Pro is simply the name of the latest Mac tower.
Just like the G3, G4 and G5 were and up until 2012 the pricing of the Mac Pro reflected this heritage.
If Apple target the next Mac Pro purely as a professional machine, it'll bomb massively IMO.
They need to bring out a Mac Pro that will branch both the semi pro/enthusiast and the professional markets (like the cMP did) and to do that it'd have to be FAR cheaper than the recently announced iMac Pro.
Unless they release a Mac Pro model starting at $2500 they needn't bother at all IMO, as it'll be a lemon - just like the trashcan Mac Pro is.
That's not to say they won't sell any (of course they would), but they wouldn't sell enough and would soon be abandoning the sector again.
The iMac Pro isn't the end of the Mac Pro directly, but it may be indirectly. Due to the iMac Pro's huge price tag, Apple will be forced to artificially inflate the cost of the Mac Pro when it's released.
I can imagine I'll be looking at Hackintoshes in future at this rate, which is something I never thought I'd ever have to consider doing. :(

Jesus H. Christ riding a bicycle.

What is "serious" about a one-off sentence about "working on" a new Mac Pro?

Well Apple did go through the effort of inviting people to a personal chit-chat session about their plans for a new Mac Pro with the full knowledge that what they said would be publicly disseminated.

Sure, Apple can change their mind again, but they've done enough damage to their public image on the subject already so I am of the opinion they're not going to want to make it even worse.

And as for the RoI aspect of this, it's Apple. They'll charge five figures for it if that is what it takes to make the margins. This forum will howl how much cheaper a Windows box is, but if those who make their living off a Mac Pro can make a better living off the new Mac Pro, they will pay the price.

Yes I have to agree. The "switchers" around here used to be newbies who were switching from Windows PC to Mac. Now all the "switching" posts are faithful Apple old timers leaving Mac for Windows PC.

Apple must feel that stemming the tide is worth the Osborne effect.

Too late for me though.

The Pro users looking for raw power are leaving the Apple Mac Pro in droves. Apple simply is not offering a machine that is modern, expandable and powerful enough for 3D work or high end video work.

Apple's press release on the iMac Pro specifically states that another Mac Pro and Apple display are coming.
What the bleep is taking Apple so long! Tim Cook is doing a horrible job maintaining their longterm "Pro" users, who willingly pay a premium price for the "loaded" machines.

Probably waiting for their annual event. I can't imagine the iMac Pro replacing the Pro. I suspect it's even worse repair bill wise down the line and the thermal throttling that may happen.

What is taking so long is that Sir Idiot Boy is once again designing something the customers aren't actually wanting - which is a cheesegrater with updated internals.

Yes, what are they doing taking so long when they had something that should have been easily retooled for a modular Mac. 2019 is way too late for a new Mac Pro! That 2019 Mac Pro better be something special!
