That's not true. We know the needs to all posters, so we can say with absolute certainty, that one thing is worth it for this poster, and that other thing is not even worth mentioning.

The iPad is worth it to me. The reason a lot of people are skeptical is because most people have a smartphone and a laptop. Therefore, it's harder to justify the iPad purchase, even though it still can be a great addition.
It is worth it for me because I don't have a laptop and only would use it for music, school work, web browsing, email etc etc. My desktop is going to handle all tasks including photo editing, music downloading and so on.
The iPad is cheaper than a laptop, lighter than a laptop and does all of the things that I would use a laptop for. And it's touch screen.

I can't answer why it may or may not be worth it for you. I can tell you why it is worth it for myself.
1. Its a pain reading PDF's on my iPod touch, and with no way to edit them or take notes it makes it useless in those terms.
2. I am a photographer, so putting images to show on my ipod kinda sucks, so I plan on using the iPad as a showing device.
3. An alternative to sitting in one place. I only have a desktop, I'd like a place to start documents.
4. Book reading- potentially taking notes with some of the pdf documents I have.
Is the above worth $499, I think it is... to boot I can use it for music. I have a lot of audio books I can convert along with ebooks. You can always wait a couple weeks to try it out. I own the ipod touch because it replaced my sucky Windows Mobile device.

I'm getting one. So I guess that means to me it is "worth it" (whatever the hell that really means anyway).
If you can't answer the question yourself, I'd guess it's probably not "worth it" to you. If you have to be convinced to buy it, you would probably regret buying it.

As many people have said, it all depends on you. I will find out it's true "worth" when it's in my house. How often will I use it coupled with a Macbook Pro and an iPhone 3GS?
I have a feeling that I'll probably be split for time between the Macbook Pro and the iPad. I don't know how it will fit in. I had a netbook and never used it. But I have a feeling this will be different.

Kinda like saying I have legs so are arms really necessary. Or maybe, more seriously, I have a drill so is a hammer overkill?
Now of course if you are trying to install a screw into a metal support you need a drill. OTOH if you need to put a nail in drywall a hammer is the right tool. So figure out what tools you need and buy accordingly.
More like saying "I have two arms, so is another one necessary?". I like your drill/hammer overkill analogy!
If it was about actual killing, then once you killed them with the hammer, the drill would simply be sadistic. 
Maybe not necessary, but could be useful. I mean, people do shout, "I need another hand here!" from time to time.
