Exactly my point, the newest for your 6 month old flagship device, the newest OS is Android 8.0 Oreo which was released in August.

My A5 is still on 6.1 because of rooting and xposed availability, even stock Android gives many restrictions, maybe less than on iOS but still enough to hold me at older firmware, the newest I can get is 7.0 which is a year old and it is very doubtful 8.0 will be available for it anyway.
But also, what good does getting the latest iOS version if it's only minor changes? It's ridiculous with Apple. Anyways I'm happily using Android phones now and I refuse to buy another iPhone every again. Not sure what my future if with Macs either. I'll see what happens when my 2015 and 2012 MBPs quit working.

Well actually my fingerprint scanner sucks, but only a fix after a year on 7.0, better small changes than no changes.
Besides that it is a tradeoff between rooted and fingerprint scanner anyway.
You buy Android as-is and don't expect software support, than you are ok.

I think we can conclude that the choices are subjective, both brands have pros and cons, I would gladly go back if Apple goes dual sim, but chances of that happening are slim.

I actually was thinking of buying a Microsoft surface pro, but still opted for a 12'' Macbook as the whole ecosystem at home is Apple. I hoped for better specs (and ports) but in the end the full and seamless integration between my iPad and macbook which I both use for work is still light years ahead of anything Android/Google/Microsoft can offer.

Using my 7+ on iOS 10 and my Galaxy S8+ on 7.0 and there is no comparison, the 8+ is miles ahead and I won't include a Note 8 because of the S pen.
