basic machine?? Nahhh...

So no good for Photoshop, Lightroom then?

I must be imagining it working for me

I agree. The Mini is small but It is very capable.. I have produced all my company graphics on my mini, so far the largest item being a 450Mb file at 300dpi, it may have churned occasionally on opening, and if I applied any general effects, but other wise quite happy. Oh and the 4ft square picture that I edited from a slide scan that's hanging on my wall looks all right to me as well!

Those of you that complain that its too slow obviously have enough money to buy a new computer every time that the beach ball takes a second longer than your happy with.

Until my mini I had an old XP PC, 512Mb ram and twin P3, 800. Very out of date, yet web, e-mail, youtube, and some photo editing (although no way near what the mini will do).

Bigger does not necessarily mean better.... but It might mean a bit faster! If you can wait an extra second for something to load, or an extra couple of minutes to rip the DVD, then I'm sure the mini will be just fine...

Any way, if there was no Mini, I would not have gone Mac, and I'm sure I'm not the only one!

Wow guys thanks for the info!! I think I really may consider the mini as my
next major system buy next year.. I hope the revisions for it are good! I was gonna say, I do just fine on my MBP with photoshop, so the mini- next years model, probably would be even better. I'll seriously consider it when it is time to buy. Thanks guys! Sorry OP for hijacking your thread! lol

I'm planning to get a mini for under my telly. The Apple TV doesn't do enough. The Mini looks perfect for that function with Plex or XBMC installed. Perfect size too.

that's what the CMAA near my home says

during the last 5 years, the mini is the machine they almost never saw coming back for repair

That would make sense, because the mac mini does not have a screen, keyboard, mouse, which would make it have less chance of something going wrong.

Just ordered the base mini with 4G ram and a Canon wireless printer ($100 rebate with the printer)
During the black friday I bought two 22 inches monitor for $190 from staples. Still not sure to setup dual monitors or return one back.

Does the new mini support dual monitors? based on the research I have done it looks like it supports dual monitors.

Do you guys prefer two monitors or one?

Yes it does. One adapter comes with the mini for use with one DVI monitor. You'll need to buy an additional mini-DP to DVI (or VGA) adapter.

I used to use two monitors but decided I prefer one BIG one instead. Depends on what you do, I guess. I had trouble keeping track of the mouse cursor when using two monitors. :)

I do this with Plex and Hulu desktop. I don't have cable tv, just internet and between my collection, hulu, and netflix I'll never ever run out of content. And it looks so snazzy under the tv

I currently run both a Dell PC Desktop and a MACBook Air w/24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display for home use. I was about to pull the trigger on an i7 iMAC but decided to wait a while since I have been reading about some QC issues that I am sure Apple will resolve in the near future. Soooooo I decided to try a new MAC Mini (just ordered it w/2.53 chip, 4g RAM and a 320g HD). Since I already own and love both the Cinema Display and Apple wireless keyboard/mouse I need nothing more. I am really looking forward to getting my hands on that Mini!

The truth is that my computer requirements do not require anything near an i7 w/8gigs. Think of it as a Caveman buying a Sports Car....well not quite.......I just want one, and will buy it cause......uh its a bloodlust kind-a-thing...hehe. In truth, even the MACBook Air handles everything I need.

Small Pixels

Go to an Apple Store and look at the menus on any 27" iMac. The print is very small, and that means you have to be closer to the screen to read it, especially if your eyes aren't good.

It's okay for very minimal users who only care about stuff like looking at pictures, email, watching some videos, and basic stuff like that.

That's what it was always meant for in the first place.
So, it's not really outdated, it just got a refresh.

Oh and also some people tend to just get it to use it with their TVs to watch movies they have on their HDD, stream Hulu, YouTube, etc.

So yeah, it really depends on what you're planning on doing on it

The Mac Mini is a macbook / low-end macbook pros ( talking about the 13 inch and the low-end 15 inch model ) without dispay , put in a small shiny box.It will run everything that a normal user do and even more - a friend of mine is using his mini for photo editing and from what i'v seen this small mini is amazing. He's also doing basic video editing on it without problems.Ofc if you are professional and you earn your money from that kind of stuff you'll most likely get the Mac Pro ( which will eat the mini in heavy tasks ) So, it's not so slow as you think :)
