2010 iMac can take 32GB, which is even more expensive :p

Hey Hell MacTracker still says 16Gb max .... do you know anyone who installed 4 x 8Gb So-Dimms successfully? Also is it fully usable .. remember the MacbOoks that reported 4Gb ram but could only use 3 Gb?

I frigging wish they would make the next iMac take full size dimms there is room in there... ( screw the concept of getting rid of the "chin") & support 2000Mhz speeds. 8Gb of 2000MHz Corsair ram with heat spreaders only cost me $180 wholesale for my PC build.

The new Mbps are definitely faster. If you're that worried about speed, then just ditch the iMac.

Source? Considering the MBP uses mobile parts for many things, while the iMac has some dekstop parts, I highly doubt its better. If I had to pick one for CPU, I could see the quad MBP being a tad better, but it won't shock me if the iMac won out. But when you look at the whole system, which you know, is the actually thing you are dealing with, the iMac comes out ahead with a desktop HDD and I presume a desktop graphic card.

I dont usually take my laptop around much, but i travel overseas once or twice a year- so thats why i need the portability...
To me, it makes little sense to get a 17'' laptop which costs something like 1500 dollars more(according to this thread, I didn't price it out) because you travel over seas "once or twice" a year. You most likely could wait until you return to do work here on your iMac or bring an old laptop, which while slow, could still handle it give time.(Heck grab a refub 13'' when the i3 ones enter the store, pick on up. Or a MBA which start as low as 850 in the Refub store. Now thats portable.

OWC

I presume a desktop graphic card.

The GPU is a mobile version.

ATI 4670 = ATI 4670M
ATI 5670 = ATI 5730M
ATI 5750 = ATI 5850M

iMacs use higher-end mobile GPUs though so in graphics performance iMac is much faster. In the end, mobile chips are just underclocked and undervolted desktop chips.

I am facing a similar dilemma. I bought a second home and need to outfit it with a rig that I can use as my photography workstation (I am a fine art photographer). Was headed in the macpro direction, as usual (mine is four years old) and an apple sales guy steered towards the top end iMac but outfitted with ssd and 2 tb drive. Then a friend of mine said get the new MacBook pro instead with an external display and get the benefit of two screens, etc. I already have the 17 inch MacBook pro but I'm not keen on hauling that back and forth -- whereas the new 15 inch laptop is truly portable and I could move it around the new house when it's not docked to the external screen. Or I could go with the iMac and get more desk surface back!!!

I always thought that the iMac was just a hybrid of laptop parts and an integral screen. Is ther any performance advantage to the iMac over a laptop, for a photographer? Also I don't really want to wait for the upgraded iMac and that makes a difference too, i guess.

I've just received my new iMac27 (Quad i7, 2.94GHz, 12GB RAM), but by looking at the new macbook pro which was released yesterday seems like the new macbook Pro could be better if not worse? I dont know that much about computer but with the thunderbolt and introducing Quadcore and all, it sounds like MB pro is now as good as my new iMAC?
Is this true?

If so, should i go for a refund and get that? ( i need a big screen, but also the portability..)

The thing is that I've got my first iMac on the 16th, but it turned out to be faulty, so ive received another one 2 days ago, and returning the old on on next monday. Would i stil be able to apply for a full refund?

Hope to hear from any of you soon :)

Mac pro is a tower type of desktop which means easy to repair. an i Mac is very complicated to repair compared to a mac pro. The i Mac on the other hand began with a resemblance to the vintage Pizza Box and has now evolved to almost become a giant laptop...The screen became LCD or equivalent and the Hardware became smaller. The hardware items on newer i Macs are very small. This smaller hardware could mean energy efficiency.
