I think the main issue is that you're selling an 8 which no one wants. There are used X models if people want a second-hand luxury phone, the upcoming XR if they want a new but cheap Face ID model, and the 7 if people want a new but cheap Touch ID model. The 8 in my opinion has been affected the most greatly in the second hand market.

Hmmm. Maybe. 8+ are going anywhere between $500 and $600 depending on what accessories are included and what condition the phone is in. Maybe that’s what people are doing but I just wouldn’t have expected there to be such a thin market for phones that are only one generation old.

1) A brand new 8+ is available for $699
2) An Apple refurbished 7+ is available for $569
3) A brand new 7+ is available for $599

For value seekers, $500 to $600 for a used iPhone 8+ without a new battery isn't that good of a deal. Maybe $400 would get it done. The iPhone 8 is a phone that is much better to trade in on an upgrade deal as opposed to selling it.

The X probably will hold its value this year because you can probably sell it for $700 to $800, which is a discount on the current Xs. The best way to get full value out of phones nowadays is to own it for two years and sell it.

1. Difference between 7 series and 8 series to most people is not that different. I assume most don't care about wireless charging so it makes sense to just get 7 series.
2. Once a redesign drops, its a lot harder to sell older design because people are probably looking for deals on new design

Yeah, very good points in the last few posts. I didn’t really think about how the 8+ is being squeezed by later models that are just as capable and the iPhone X and the forthcoming XR.

Honestly, if that’s what is going on, I actually feel better about it as this means that it or necessarily the entire secondary market, but maybe just particular models that no longer have much of a niche.

The problem is Apple lowered the older devices prices new significantly. That of course drives resale of those used devices lower if you can get new for say $50-100 more. An 8+ brand new is $699 for 64gb right now.

So yeh you paid $799 for it, but is someone going to buy a used one for $650 or new with warranty for $699? The market is just not good for used older models unless they're super cheap. And you can't add Applecare to a used phone either so if it breaks you're SOL full price repairs.

Personally, if I had to choose a used $600 8+ (treated who knows how not seeing it person or its charge cycles on the battery) or $699 new Id go new still. The extra $99 is piece of mind its brand new with a warranty and able to pick up Applecare+ still.

It's also being squeezed down by a much more advance XR phone without a home button, with a bigger display and better internals at $749.

After the introduction of OLED display any iPhone with LCD is considered the poor people iPhone so it'll be harder to move. The new iPhone Xr reinforces this notion.

Yeah I'd want a significant discount as well, at least $200 in the case of an 8+. Who knows what websites it's seen. I don't want a traumatized phone.

You'd be amazed by how many 40+ millionaires are using SEs.

The Xr isn't even out yet tho.... I think the Xr is gonna fly off the shelves for the simple fact that its the new design at a lower price.

I always need the latest and greatest and normally I would immediately dismiss the XR but getting it mainly because the battery life is even better than the 8 Plus (which is better than the XS Max). I think OLED against a white background uses like 4x the energy as an LCD.

I can deal with 326 ppi since I have no problems with this resolution going back to the iPhone 6.

Yes but they’re all on Android.

I personally know three, they are all on iPhones for personal and "other" for biz.

I just checked what I would have got for my 7+ via ebay, etc and at most it would have been $200 over trade in, hardly worth the effort and risk.

Very few people know or care about LCD vs OLED. I've shown my MAX to several people and say "the screen is better..." They ask "how," and I say "it is OLED, not LCD." People's eyes glaze over. I then say the screen is sharper and bigger. The point is that the LCD XR will likely do just fine despite it being LCD because it will be a big, bright quality screen.

I sold my 2 year old iPhone 7 32gb (mint, unlocked with box etc) for £270, I thought that was a reasonable price I got back.

Adam.
Great price for a 2 year old iPhone 7 32gb someone wanted to purchase my perfect iPhone X 64GB for £420 ebay.
I was like are you joking I just seen Mazuma mobile and Handtec purchasing second hand units for £450 and now selling them for like £700. lol
Going to keep this iPhone X

I sold my X in less than a day on Swappa for $780. If you want it gone quick my advice is to price it aggressively on the lower end of everything else that is listed. Of course, it is a trade-off depending on how much money you want to give up in search of a quick sale.
64 gig?

So just from watching how used iPhone sales work over the years in order to get the most bang for your buck you need to sell before the Sept Keynote where they announce new iPhones due to the fact that almost instantly there is a drop in your iPhone’s value. At that point everyone also unloads their iPhones on eBay or wherever to upgrade to the new model.

I bought a slightly used iPhone X 256gb with a year and a half of AppleCare for $865 the day after the Keynote announcing the iPhone XS and XS Max. That phone new would have cost $1450 roughly which is around $550-$600 of savings so it is a buyers market right now.

Good luck with the sale though.

Gazelle gave me $400 for my 64 GB 8+ Looks like their offer is down to $325 now. I’ve sold iPhones on eBay in the past, used one other trade-in service (Nextworth - horrible experience). My experience with Gazelle has, by far, been the easiest and most stress-free of any option I’ve used.

I got offered £209 for my 3yr old 6S+ by a trade in company which is quite impressive actually.

Think the issue now is you can get an iPhone 7 new from Apple for £449 so people would opt for that than pay higher on ebay and face the associated risks.

Recently got my 8 plus for 560 with a full year of apple warranty... mint condition with 100% battery health. Save over 200 bucks via getting it brand new
