Is the Ultra display much bigger than 45 mm? I mocked this up bassed on apples website.

Apple’s compare section shows the pixel dimension between the two, it’s marginal

Bottom = 49.
This doesn't seem right. Surely it's gotta be more than this...
I've used the images in the OP to compare. Maybe the images aren't accurate???
45 v 49 apple watch.png

Apple Watch Series 8 45mm:

396 x 484 Pixels = 1.143 square mm

Apple Watch Ultra 49mm:

410 x 502 Pixels = 1.164 square mm

Taken from the official website.

So we are talking 0,021 square mm more on the ultra.
This is not much for the size increase….

So silly the watch is huge because if case and bezels they should of made the screen bigger in sticking with series 7 horrible Watch updates this year

I had the same question. Appears from the comparison on Apple’s official Apple Watch website that it isn’t. I’m upgrading from a 44mm Series 6, so the difference will be more apparent. Some of the newer released watch faces are difficult to see on the 44mm screen, hope that the Ultra is better.

If not, back to Cupertino (I know that returns don’t go back to Tim Cook’s basement, just having some fun).

This is the main reason I've given the Ultra a swerve. Why would I want a massive new watch where the screen is actually no bigger. Its pretty darn big and ugly and if it was true edge to end then yeah sure it 'might' pursuade me but it really isn't.

The battery life, well that would be nice but I've gone for an SS S8 instead this year as an upgrade from my S5.

Apple next year - today we announce the Apple Watch Ultra 2 with true edge to edge screen rather than giving you a massive face and a small display....

I agree I wanted it for the bigger display now knowing it’s the same why would anyone want a huge ugly case and get bigger bezels and screen, the normal watch is durable enough, and I wanted the brighter display and louder speakers but not gonna get it just for that, it’s a shame the series 8 is a useless upgrade

While I agree with you, I don't understand why you Would get the SS version than. It’s the same price as the ultra. You would get double the battery life for the same size screen and price. If you were getting the aluminum I would understand.

Because it’s ugly and huge and not sleek, and I change the watch every night anyways and now it has low power mode, the ultra isn’t a good option at all they should of made the series 8 better

They should have made the 8 better, That is why I am not upgrading. But to me getting me the SS since they didn’t upgrade it is useless. The only reason to upgrade to the ultra is the extra battery life. If you use 2 watches or don’t sleep with it then why would you upgrade to the eight

Actually thought the excact same when I saw some of the hands on videos - The watch faces didn't look bigger at all!

Apple says the Ultra display is 27% larger than the SE and they say the S8 45mm is 20% larger than the SE.
Based on that, we can surmise the Ultra display area is 7% larger than the 45mm. 7% larger text and numbers and elements, etc, is a pretty good increase.

Because its a new model of watch aimed at some specific use-cases... the durability is only one of the differences about the Ultra.

From looking at the forum since the announcement, what a lot of people seem to want is a bigger version of the current Apple Watch with a drastically improved battery. That's not what this watch is.

They could have gone bigger, but then the watch would have probably been bigger AND the battery drain would be higHer. Next to GPS or Cellular connectivity the screen is the biggest drain when in use.

The pixel density is not the same. What we need is the display square mm. That can be calculated by screen dimensions. But I don't have time to look for that. Apple spec for S7 45mm says 1143 sq mm display area, but they haven't updated that page yet.

1164 vs 1143. So 1.8% bigger by that measure (unless I screwed up the math)

No matter to me. I'm happy to do away with the curved part of the screen at the edges. I have pretty big fingers and struggle to not trigger a response from the screen when trying to use the crown or side button.

You guys didn’t read my post did you?
You don’t have to speculate.
Display is 0,021 square mm bigger on the Ultra then on S8.
