My old sony ericsson had an in built radio so I could listen to the radio without using data. The earphone leads was used as an aerial.

But the iPhone doesnt have an in built radio so you'll need to use data.

i knew what you were talking about, but obviously you didn't spend 20 seconds it takes to google the iPhone tech specs to see that it doesn't have a built in radio

Lol :D
What kind of questions are these Chris?
Internet Radio without data?
Another doozie question before you wanted a navigation app thats free and also doesnt use data.
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/769100/
You cant be serious, think a little :D

lol, are you serious?

my old N95-8gb had a built in GPS, and for the S60 devices they have a couple FREE NAVIGATION APPLICATIONS + Maps...
and a few friends with other phones have built in Radio's that DO NOT REQUIRE DATA.

so how are my questions unreasonable?

and did i say INTERNET radio? obviously not. my clock radio at home doesn't use DATA... which in addition to my friends having free radio on their respective phones lead me to believe the iphone could do the same thing. i obviously assumed the iphone would work in the same way.. i guess that is MY mistake..

And to answer your question... "what kind of questions are these?"
these are my questions my friend.. this is a FORUM.
Whether my question is appropriate for you or not, the fact still remains i can ask it never the less.

and yes, you are right.
i was ignorant to the fact that for radio you need an independent receiver... i didn't know that.
which is why i asked. which is why i wouldn't google something like that because i didn't know how it worked.

chris001, I believe everyone is confused because you are looking for an app. That would indicate something that is not included in the base product. For example, you wouldn't go looking for a phone app for the iPhone. Of course, the iPhone can be considered to have a phone app, but you don't need to download it or purchase one to make it work.

Lol, are you serious genious?
Everyone knows that the iphone doesnt have an AM/FM radio built in.
Im sure you did also. If not you need to at least do some basic research and educate yourself to find out what you're buying before you do.
Just cause your previous phone or clock radio had a certain feature it doesnt mean that the iphone has every single feature out there included in it.
Im done replying to your questions, you are clueless.

Call your mother, father, grandma, grandpa.
Ask them that question. see if they know. heck ask only iphone users.. i bet you half of them don't know the answer to that.
I honestly didn't know. so is that my fault?

just because it seems blatantly obviously to you doesn't mean it is obvious to someone else.. and yes, you are right, i didn't do the research. i'm sorry?

fyi, a lot of iphone users that have an iphone do not know what 2G and 3G means, i do, but i can guarantee you that a lot don't.

maybe my question is confusing.. but the iphone 2G and 3G does not come with a video recorder.. yet, if you install cycorder those woes are over...

Look, its not necessary to make fun of the OP here. He didn't understand something. He asked a question. Big deal..

It'd be cool if there were an am/fm receiver accessory for the iPhone but it doesn't look like there is.

Then it wouldn't be an application. It would be an external accessory, even on the Sony you needed to use their own headset to use as an antenna. There is no built in radio tuner in the iphone so you have to use data services. cycorder has nothing to do with the transmission of radio signals, it is a modification of the software to allow you to record something and is all localized within your phone. Radio signals are transmitted from a source and your iphone needs some way to receive it. Different cases.

It CAN be done

I agree with Fleetwood Mac (great name). Having said that, Chris...I can probably hook you up with someone who could make an app to do that...it won't come cheap and would require hardware mod to your device (thinking duct tape and http://tinyurl.com/kjzc42 for the mod and apple to OK the app or perhaps cydia might be a better way to go for the app created to accommodate the hardware mod...but yeah it might not need an app after all. It can be done but it would be pretty costly especially with the percentage I'd take. ;)

I'm actually cracking up at how ignorant applejuiced and some other seem in terms of a limited view of what "radio" really means. This technically can be done in the sense of what Slacker does with their own devices. They simply cache the radio stations to the device's storage for later playback. You can refresh the station (update the music) when connected via WiFi so you don't need any sort of data plan for this.

While it's not rocket science, it is something that the Slacker iPhone app doesn't do and widely speculated that it's something Apple won't allow as storing music locally might be a little too close to competing with the core iPod functionality.

How ignorant of you thinking that downloading content and playing it later its actually radio and mentioning something that doesnt exist for the iphone.
If you'd read his first post he wants radio without paid or free data thru wifi.
I liked the above posters suggestion with the duct-tape better :D

I'm looking for a radio app that doesn't use data.. paid or free doesn't matter.

thanks.
[doublepost=1486015660][/doublepost] Many smartphones on sale today - including Apple’s iPhones, Samsung’s Galaxy phones and LG phones - come with built-in FM chips. However, nearly two thirds of these devices don't have the feature activated. Now the radio industry, faced with the rise of digital radio, are calling for this to change.

Found this after a lil skimming.. so maybe you could go to uour provider and see if they can switch it on... hope this helps as I looking for the very same thing!

What provider can switch it on for an iOS device? If Apple doesn't provide/enable it, then it's not something that is available.

The phone obviously have a radio receiver but Apple hasn't added/activated FM capability. I see no reason to add it now that many countries are dropping analog radio for DAB+.

DAB is crap and we should just skip it and go for 4G coverage.
