I have a 2016 MacBook Pro, with CateLina I’ve noticed messages regarding certain apps that they won’t be compatible with a future version of the MacOS. One is my Scansnap document scanner. Would that be this version? Yes, I will check the manufacturer (Fujitsu) web site to look for compatibility info, but though I’d ask here too.
Thanks.

I cant get it to install on an external SSD. So its a no go if you have one as your boot drive.

Way too soon to install fresh OS on production machine. I usually wait until at least .2 or higher before installing it on internal drive. Yes I keep the Big Sur installed on my external LaCie SSD just to see the progress and install all the applications and tools I need for work, but before every single thing works as expected I would never upgrade my current installation with freshly baked OS. Life is too short to loose time on solving every year problems that are present in newly released OS.

I fully second that.
Catalina doesn't really count here, as there are still a number of bloodcurdling problems for many users in the current 10.15.7 branch. But usually waiting for ".2 or higher" is a quite well thought out strategy

Catalina is far from perfect but I'm quite certain it is in much better shape than Big Sur currently is. Software takes time to craft and millions of users who install it will provide reports and logs for people at Apple to fix those issues in the months that come.

Also, not every app updates are released to fully support Big Sur yet.

And in the end I'm not personally pleased with the UI changes and prefer the look of Catalina over Big Sur. :)

Text/Font is, much smaller now across entire OS.
Is that not adjustable?
Is there a reason *to* install it? If there is, then do so. If there is not, then do not.
I usually upgrade to the latest and greatest and with the MacOS have never regretted it other than when Rosetta went away, but I adjusted and it helped hugely that I dropped my Mac from gaming consideration.

Can you expand on UI changes?

Big Sur is working just fine here. The UI is definitely a big change, but I like it.

The "future versions of macOS" bit would've been referring to the fact you cannot run 32-bit apps, but you couldn't run them in Catalina either.

I haven’t had any problems with Sur thus far. Granted, I haven’t put it through its paces and explored every single feature, yet. It will take a little getting used to just like Catalina did. I do like it better than Catalina, which I was glad to get rid of.

Also if anyone's interested, Carbon Copy Cloner is golden for such "tests". Simply make an external SSD as your main drive for eg. Big Sur and play around with it, once it's ready to replace your actual OS, just let the CCC do its work and replace the bootable drive in your machine with the contents of external SSD with eg. Big Sur on it.

you're making baseless comments, Catalina is an excellent operation system as of today after months of software updates. What are these issues you're talking about? Big Sur will take months to be anywhere near what Catalina is now.

You might want to read this article over at 9to5mac about things learned during yesterday's Apple server outages:

If this is all true, I am not upgrading to Big Sur, nor am I buying any Mx-based Mac, until this kind of phoning-home is stopped.

If you like the appearance of tight UI elements, where by the Titlebar of the windows doesnt take 3 x the height of Catalina's, then don't install Big Sur. Makes it look like a giant iPad.

I just read the article you linked to, That is absolutely INSANE!, Does the tracking continue if Gatekeeper is disabled? its easy to disable gatekeeper with a simple terminal command. The article states that Little Snitch (But which processes need to be blocked?) is able to block the tracking but i wonder if disabling Gatekeeper would do the same?

What - baseless comments? 😮 Catalina an excellent operating system?
What the hell are you talking about? o_O
Of course Catalina 10.15.7 runs flawlessly for a number of users, but this certainly and definitely does not make it a stable operating system for all! Why is it so difficult to comprehend that having no problems on certain machines does not change anything at all about the numerous problems many other users still have!

Just to name a few examples for the issues I'm talking about, currently occuring not only on my rig but also on many other Macs (...and don't get into arguing: "this doesn't happen on my Mac, so it cannot happen at all /cannot be caused by the operating system", because this would just be ridiculous and ignoring the way software works)
Catalina 10.15.7 (Build 19H15) is currently limited by bugs and problems including, but not limited to:
  • Safari crashes frequently
  • Apple Mail fails to synchronize with iCloud, removes Mails from iCloud. Open sync / transfer issues shown in activity window. Many messages reappear in “Recovered Messages” Folders, but are deleted from iCloud. No more cloud sync possible
    • Workaround: Delete and rebuild Mail index via external tools, e.g. via Onyx. Apple Support not being able to fix this problem.
  • Time Machine recovery not possible for Mails
  • Time Machine restore of full OS Datapoint fails - Fusion Drive is filled with junk data and the recovery fails with error message
  • Time Machine requires Password entry, if entered wrongly it just terminates service without warning, no more password entry possible
  • Screen Time: massive delays, wrong values, no values for family members - on all Platforms, but especially under macOS Catalina it is second to useless because of the amount of bugs and disturbances
  • iOS / iPadOS Devices not recognized in Finder, even when plugged in. Error Message offers factory reset of device although they’re working properly
  • Finder hangs in sync mode with iOS / iPadOS Device. No more „real“ sync possible, also shutdown of macOS is prevented. Restarting Finder doesn’t help, only forced reset of Mac via Hardware Button possible
  • Maps: Adding Locations to Lists / Favourites sometimes not possible
  • massive and persisting problems connecting AirPods Pro
  • Notes Sync buggy, updates on Sketches don’t sync (Workaround: save under new title)
  • accountsd sometimes terminates whole system, restart required
  • iOS / iPad OS Update fails / iPhone 8 is bricked (reproducible) by Finder on iOS Update. Reproducible Problems and several types of crashes / hangups on starting Updates for several iOS devices via Finder. After Catalina reboot, everything works fine again
  • iPhone / iPad disappears in Finder when disconnected from cable although WiFi Sync is enabled
  • Balance in macOS App Store shows wrong sum most of the time (was already there in Mojave)
  • Fotos Database corrupted after Catalina Upgrade, Restore not possible (alt-cmd), falls back to iCloud Restore (successful)
  • Fotos hangs up when switching between Shared Albums / Activity
  • Fotos / edit Slo-mo videos: timeline not consistent, some Slo-mo Videos not to be found in Folder "Slo-Mo"
  • Music: Imported Files show wrong Title Info if “Work” metadata field is filled
  • Apple Maps: Renaming of Favourites not possible as described in Apple Support Documents

And Big Sur fixes all these issues? Lol come on seriously?

many users would agree that Catalina is solid at this point after being out for so long.

I'm surprised to learn this. This spying crap is what made me leave MS Windows.

I never implied that. That’s where I completely agree with you - Big Sur has a long road ahead...

Yes.
But as I pointed out, this doesn‘t change anything for the many users who won‘t.

I came here just looking for this piece of news, and I’m glad you brought it up.

I’d like the staff (@arn , @jclo and company) to consider bringing this to the front page, of course after studying the truthfulness of this info.

Apple sells privacy as one of their core values, and this is not acceptable.
