I maintain the difference may be small, but I attest that that small time save is significant, and would need to be noted.

This is true, however if a person is on a really tight budget, it is not logical nor sane to influence him to spend so much money for a PCIe SSD.
If you are a wealthy person then go for the more expensive option. If you earn a median salary then go with the cheaper option without feeling regrets or that you made the wrong choice.
It's really simple.

Yeah, of course. But money being a factor is common sense. We don't need to state that.

I didn't even get it, I'm not going to spend $900 on a flash drive for a machine I use to check email and check google chrome. Plus I like having 2tb of storage.

But, you may be misunderstanding some of the idea behind the posts in this thread.

I'm arguing it is the fastest option, not that everyone has to buy it.

I have been running an external delock thunderbolt case with a Samsung 850 Pro (512GB) for several days now. Total cost about 400€. My next iMac will have the minimum hard disk config and will be running with an external SSD. Prices of Apple are just ridiculous for hard disks.

I agree, that apple is ridiculous, but hopefully the next gen iMac will be SSD only and the prices will be decent.

I don't feel they are that far out of sight for the specific tech you get. But that's neither here nor there.

I'm curious about your setup. Would be so kind as to run a black magic speed test on that drive?

You can put your Samsung 850 Pro inside your iMac.

There's a whole thread with instructions, videos, and links here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/guide-replace-the-hard-drive-in-your-27-imac-slim.1979747/

The whole process took me 30-40 minutes.

I did get a 2nd person to help me lift the display and that's probably why it didn't take very long.

That's not that good.

It's usually around 500 MB/s for both write and read when it's hooked up internally.
I have a internal fusion drive which is my main system disk the Samsung on the thunderbolt is my experimental system, the speed is just fine for software testing, much better that the original golfex HDD. The system is a late 2015 5K iMac 3.3 i5 with 24GB of ram.
