But its such a PITA to get 64-bit windows installed on a 32-bit kernel.. I think the 2008 3,1 would be better for Windows 7,8, soon 8.1 for 64-bit kernel. While I love to tinker myself I think getting 64-bit kernel based Windows 7 or 8 will take up quite a bit of time.

I did hear about Chimera or Chameleon bootloader which would inject 64-bit capability to boot them in 64-bit.

the only 32bit kernal is OSX's..

I run windows 7 64 and a 2,1 MacBook windows cares not at all about Apples EFI which is the only thing 32 bit on the Mac Pro

1. Get your calculator out and add up how much it will cost to upgrade the 1.1 with the suggestions you get
2. Compare that number to the cost of a 4.1
3. You may catch a few fire sales from those chasing the itrashcan:rolleyes:

I actually don't know of any TB boxes with JBOD only. It would certainly help people to swallow the price.

I was thinking of this one, but apparently it is a raid box. It's also $1500 for a barebones 8 bay box. I think the lack of internal storage is a bad move. Going forward consider some of the available sizes for HDDs. Even 4TB drives can be cost effective in terms of cost per GB at this point. The chipset allows for 6 connections. If you reserved 2 for boot ssds and allowed for 4 additional drives for storage, you can get as high as 16TB on anything purchased today. If you're going into it with more smaller drives, you would already have some kind of housing anyway. USB3 isn't a bad option if you don't require that level of speed.

so the lady needs to be a HW engineer to look inside her Mac look at the new one and know it likely won't fit?

She's not allowed to be annoyed by removed functionality and elegance in favor of design?

The party line must be towed at all times?

What amazing new thing does this MP bring to the table?

you can install xeon x5355 or x5363 quad core processors in a 1,1 with a firmware update.

You'll find it worlds faster.

Best luck.

How can you call the new Mac Pro a trash can when we really don't know what the new Mac Pro is capable of and you admit to being "not too savvy on the hardware side".

I'm not dissing the hardware specs, I'm dissing the aesthetics....
