Quick Time

What if you've already ripped all your DVD's to play on your laptop? Is there a way to take those files and convert them so they are playable on an iPad? I wouldn't want to re-rip those DVD's again just for my iPad.

Depending on what you ripped them to it could be as easy as opening them in quick time and clicking export. But there are better options.

Once done, put file wherever you want on your computer, drop into iTunes, and edit the file info with any info you want to be able to see on your iPad (year, director, synopsis, etc (can all be found at IMDB)) and add some cover art if you like.
Sync video to iPad in iTunes.

I have ripped a load of DVDs using Handbrake in anticipation of getting an iPad (whenever that may be here in th uk  ) but i'm curious as to where you enter the metadata for the movies that you describe. I have added the artwork but the description puzzles me. I have looked at the description for an iTunes purchased movie I have and it appears to be in the 'Description' field in the 'Video' tab of 'Get info'. This then seems to show up in the 'Show Description' option although with more info than is showing in the aforementioned 'Video' tab. So I entered some text into one of my movies in the same field and it doesn't show in the 'Show Description' box and when I go back in it has also truncated my original entry. What am I doing wrong?

Now you are going to bring in the clowns who say stuff like, "Why doesn't the iPad not have a camera? You know they are just gonna add it in v2." Ugh, those people annoy me.

I wasn't alluding to a camera. I was alluding to a scanner. :)

Check out the iPad apps AirVideo or StreamtoMe. Although they are not going to help get the files on your iPad, they will stream them through your wifi, which might be just what you are looking for most of the time.

Not really considering I want to watch these films while traveling, not at home.

All,

What is the size limit of a movie that will transfter to the iPad file size that is in MB?

Thanks.

There is no Apple approved method for watching DVDs... period. Apple approved method for watching movies is via iTunes.

Steve

As previously noted, except with a slingbox and SlingPlayer, which is an Apple approved app.

Blair - that makes sense. You may have some transcoding to do. We desired an occasional movie while traveling, but most of the desire was to move content around our house. StreamtoMe seems quite well done for that.

Right. That does sound convenient. My biggest hangup with the iPad is what to do exactly with my DVD collection that I have ripped onto my external HD. Maybe down the road someone will come out with a software app that converts avi's and what not to iPad compatible formats for viewing.

Me? Well I've used the universal setting and that has worked fine. Ive used the apple tv setting for storing them but to convert them to iPad friendly format, I use the univeral setting. I hope the handbrake developer makes an iPad setting soon! I'm trying to strike a balance between quality and file size and the universal setting at least to me has been the closest compromise.

I’m stuck in a black hole with Handbreak. Literally. Used it to convert an .mov file for use on my iPad, but what came out was audio only—no video. The original file is fine (well, except for the fact it’s 33g in size), so the data definitely exists.

Same outcome, regardless of whether I used Universal or Apple TV. Tried ‘em both. Repeatedly.

Any guidance, oh wise ones? Thanks in advance!

I had no luck with Handbrake eiither. It seemed to be working but the darned thing was so slow. It was estimating 16 hours to convert a 2-hour DVD. After 2 hours I canceled it and removed the program from my computer.

I tried it on another computer with the same results.

I asked earlier in this thread for an alternative but I don't think I got an answer. At this point I'll pay for a converter.

What are the good (fast) ones?

I use a combination of MetaX and Subler. Just google them and download, they're both great programs; and free!

There are actually 2 descriptions; a long and short one... both the above programs will enable you to edit those fields. iTunes really limits what tags you can edit....!

I used DVD Decrypter to rip and Videora iPod Converter to convert to mpeg4. Videora has started to make my computer sound like it's ready for takeoff into the atmosphere, so I may download Handbrake to swap it out tonight :) Thanks for the input everyone!

I don't get it. I have a 2 year old iMac that rips movies in about real time, i.e., 1.5 hours for a 1.5 hour movie. I don't know what you are doing wrong. I just click the Appletv preset and let it go. Ripped all my movies like this and they play on iPhone, the Mac, iPad, no conversions necessary.

What are you doing wrong? You use the buggy thing built into iTunes :D

Google for "Doug Show Description". This gets you to "Doug's Applescripts" which is a huge collection of Applescripts for iTunes; one is "Show Description" which lets you enter the description. The description will be shown for example in Frontrow below the artwork.

Get Air Video and stream those movies from your computer to your ipad over wireless. It does the conversion on the fly...

It works amazingly well!

Popcorn

I still use the original Popcorn, but you may be able to use Popcorn 4 (though they only show on the back cover a picture of the movie going to your iPhone) so maybe the next Popcorn will allow it, or Toast. I only say Popcorn because Toast is more expensive, all in all they are the same thing.

On the legal matter, I researched this about 4 years ago, so I am sure things have changed. What I read was it is legal to make a back up copy of a DVD you own. Of course this does not comply with movies you rent.
If you wait on a DVD these days you can get a movie for about 10.00, except us Blu-Ray people, though there are great sales for Blu-Rays at Frys, Wal-Mart, and Target. Granted not all the best movies nor the best Blu-Ray transfers.

I have tried several times to rip directly with Handbrake but I'm not able to do so. I select my TS_Video folder on my DVD drive, and Handbrake always pops me an error message.

I'm using the Apple TV setting in Handbrake!

What settings do you recommend for the iPad?

It's a larger file size but the quality of the video on the iPad has been outstanding! Oddly enough the only movie that I've had trouble with is The Secretary...even though it ripped a huge file compared to the run time the video came out 'interlaced' ... I haven't gone to the trouble to re-rip and tweak the settings...but movies like The Dark Knight, V for Vendetta, 2012 have turned out terrific!

If you are running on a PC, Handbrake requires you to use some other tool to rip the DVD to your hard drive, IIRC. If you are on a Mac, you need to have VLC installed. Handbrake 0.93 and later will no longer rip DVD's and instead relies on some VLC libraries to do it.

I also have a fairly powerful PC workstation I use at work...What about on the darkside? Nero products? I have seen some non-brand name video programs at idiot-land..er..Best Buy...anyone know anything?

I'd be VERY wary of doing this. DVD Ripping, while not illegal in every scenario, is a grey area at best. Most companies aren't going to have a sense of humor about illegal or potentially questionable work being done on corporate hardware.

I know a guy that got fired for a similar (though slightly different) reason. He got zero warning. He showed up, was called into a meeting and escorted off premises by security.

Obviously I don't know your particular situation, but I will advise caution. Big Brother IS watching.

Good luck,
B

load DVD in Drive
Open Handbrake
Select source
Wait for Handbrake to read the disc
Select Regular>Normal setting in Preset tray
Click Start

When you say drop it into iTunes - how exactly do you do that? Do you put it in a certain folder, or just import it somehow?

Yep thats the way to go! I have over 20 movies on my external HD. And Air Video works great!! Plus you wont use up and space on your iPad...:)
