with the introduction of HBO Max, I'm leaning toward dropping my iPhone unlimited grandfather plan. currently paying $100/mo. i have a school discount in place of -18.

i'm currently paying $6 in fees/surcharges, so $85 for unlimited elite + $6 fees = $91. the school discount would be -10, so 81. i signed up for hbo max at 12/mo so that's a combined 112/mo vs 81, so a savings monthly of $31.

i wasn't able to change my plan online, i had to call and this is what they told me:

apparently since i've been on the same plan since 2008 - unlimited data which was 3G at the time - i have not been paying something called an "access fee". it seems you pay an access fee ($40 in my single line case) to access their data/talk/text plan ($85 in fees for unlimited elite) plus additional fees. i'm at $100 all in and she quoted me a new monthly rate of $152. needless to say i passed and will pay my 100 and 12 for hbo max and be happy.

when i told this story to my friends, of course i got what other posters here have said: "i pay that for my family's 4 lines", which is great and i'm happy for you. i don't have a need for 4 lines so it's apples and pears.

Yep. Just me and my wife. We don’t need 4, 5 or 6 lines. T Mobile has poor coverage here and at the office, so that’s out. Verizon is good, but expensive. Our next iPhones will be factory unlocked so we can go to Verizon if prices drop. In the meantime, we’ll take the free HBO and HBO MAX and the new tethering (all for $45 less per month).

$152 for single line? Ha Ha. Ya Right.
At&t been raising rates and trying to force people to do paperless billing and direct deposit to get some sort of discount.

That's another thing. I'm actually on paperless billing and autopay with credit card (for points, cellphone warranty and in case of disputes).

I don't think I'd want to give them access to my debit card. With credit cards, it's the bank/issuer's "money". With debit card or checking account number, it could take a long time to get your money back if there's a problem.

I finally ditched the grandfather plan earlier this year after having had it since the first iPhone. Like you, I had a FAN discount, unlimited text/data and like 450 minutes +nights and weekends (so basically unlimited calling). Cost was somewhere around $90-95 a month after taxes and fees.

The unlimited plan I changed to also gave free Spotify ($10 a month), plus free watch TV (or whatever they call it), and wireless hotspot usage (still haven't used). Price now is $80-83 a month after taxes.

While the savings aren't huge, the free Spotify was nice and having extra channels to watch for free is also a plus (don't have cable). Seeing as AT&T raises the price of grandfather'd plans $5 or so every year it's always going to go up. For the time being, I'm happy with the decision to change

I currently pay $90 a month for my AT&T grandfathered unlimited plan. My wife pays $60 for a basic Sprint plan, so $150 for both. For $170 (just $20 more) it looks like I could have 4 lines (will add my mom and dad) and still have unlimited data, free Netflix, free Wi-Fi on flights, and most importantly, 20GB of hotspot.

Is there any reason to hold on to my AT&T plan? The only benefit is that my employee discount is eligible with the grandfathered plan but not any of the new AT&T or Verizon Unlimited plans. So if I move to another AT&T or Verizon plan, it doesn't make sense. But it does seem to make sense to switch to T-Mobile which is even cheaper without an employee discount.

I also had the grandfathered plan from 2007. I dropped it a couple of years ago in favor of a more modern unlimited plan. They kept making the old grandfathered one less and less attractive, and once I realized I could tether using the new unlimited plans, I took on of those in an instant. Been happy so far.

Ok, first off, I do NOT know the technical words to use but... My wife and I HAD the grandfathered ATT plan up until 4 months ago. We were on the original iPhone plan... Had it all these years and loved it. For some reason I let ATT talk me into saving money while I was setting up my daughters iPad data. I‘m even paying for the unlimited “HD” (whatever ATT calls it) and I CAN tell a difference. My wife and I are normally heavy data users for work. Our apps now update slower, videos buffer more and the web pages load noticeably slower. It’s livable but the wife and I wish we had the grandfathered plan back. We still have grandfathered plans on our iPads... Will NOT be changing those. Again, I can‘t explain the why, I just know it’s different. I live in an area with great single so I know the plan changed the quality.
