I prefer the fact that Windows XP can run on just about about any hardware. I am also very familiar with some of the command-based commands that you can do with it (like "cdburn" to burn a CD ISO, for example). Otherwise, it's definitely getting dated.

Best thing about Windows XP is that I don't have to use it!
My boss tries to get me a Dell, but I rather keep my 6 years old PowerMac G4 400 MHz...

One thing that XP does very well is something that OSX does terribly, or not at all.

Keyboard shortcuts. God I love 'em and XP makes them so simple.

That one feature is the reason I work *so* much quicker in MS Office on XP than on OSX.

I can't believe the way MS does it is patented or copyrighted so why Apple don't do it that way I'll never know. I thought OSX was about making it simple to use the computer for 'the rest of us'.

Yes, it makes more sense this way than the other way around. I was rather refering to the way of accessing the function by changing the menu by pressing a modifier key. But then I realised that this behaviour at least in the Finder is not unique. I just never happened to press a modifier key before while on a menu.

Well so thanks for the hint. I learned somthing new about the Mac.

Same here. Interesting.

It would be a heck of a lot better if people didn't write viruses for it. Linux guys I would think.

Windows xp computers plays windows media files better than a mac. Since most websites use windows media I still like xp.

visual studio - I still prefer it to devtools. and c#.net with visual studio is a very easy program to write gui based programs very quickly for windows. I know it is an m$ language but its a shame that c# isn't supported on osx (yes I know about cocoa sharp and the mono project but both are quite frankly rubbish)

Best thing about XP is the lack of pretentious user base

lol!I'm not pretentious, I'm just better than XP users because I use OSX :D

To be honest, I wish OSX had Paint, as was mentioned earlier. It's great to be able to quickly visualise ideas, diagrams etc. Also, when I first switched, I prefered the way XP put saved items into folders. I found it much easier to organise work. For the first two months with my Mac I kept everything on the desktop because I didn't know how to organise folders.

But now, using Windows XP for anything other than Explorer frustrates me. I MUCH prefer using Office for OSX than for XP.

Wow -- I was hoping to see intelligent conversation and useful support here, not a rehash of the usual "anti-Windows" refrain that is all too common in the Mac World.

OK, so you like Mac -- a lot! That's great. But don't forget that about 90% of the world's PC run Windows -- not Mac. And that's actually one of the things that I like most about it. Wherever I go in the world I can log in to an internet cafe -- running Windows -- or someone else's system -- running Windows -- and I know precisely how I can do just about whatever I want to do with it.

The thing that made Mac great originally -- all of the UI features and "cool stuff" -- really came about because it was such a "closed box". That was great in many ways but it also was a real "shot in the foot" as it closed off a lot of possible development work.

Regardless of all of that -- how about just recognizing that it does work and that 90% of the personal computing users of the world can't be completely wrong.

I'd bet the contents of my trousers that a very, very large propotion of that 90% do not choose to use MS's Windows OS based on a comparison and appraisal of all the available OSs.

Many corporate networks, with hundreds of users that use MS Windows but the choice of OS was probably made by one IT manager.

I wonder what the percentage of choices is for each OS, and then I wonder if you asked only the people who had compared OSs what those percentages would be?

Not having to pay for a functional version of Windows explorer - $35
Games - $100's
Not having to listen to fanboys constantly dissing *nix and os x - Priceless.

Seriously guys, how bigoted are you? Most of the world uses XP. If it were really a PoS that you all make it out to be, everyone would have switched to nix or OS X eons ago. So seriously, XP has sooo many things done right that OS X just lacks.

Paint is one of those. Yeah, I have Photoshop, but if I just want to draw a line on a photo, I have yet to find a descent image editing app for OS X besides a $500 program. Rediculous, especially when XP comes with one right out of the box.

Finder. OS X users, know what FTFF means? Not even a windows fanboy would know what that means.. windows explorer works.

Alt+tab works, the start menu.. sometimes a pain, but just as useful. The task bar. I dunno, there's something nice about being able to choose which window of a certain program you want to see, instead of having to hunt for it.

I could go on, but let me leave it at this. If you run a clean system by being safe about downloads and use firefox, the differences between OS X and XP is minimal at best. Maybe OS X looks better, or XP feels snappier, but damn... I'll be completely honest, I have my mac mini sitting at home accessable via VNC, and I brought my XP laptop to college, and except for the 30 gigs of music I have stored on my mac (which I don't have the space for on my laptop), there's nothing I miss about my mac mini that XP can't do just as well.

P.S.
