I have never owned a MAC. I know nothing about them other than they are pricey. I want one, but never wanted to put out the coin for it. I have a friend that needs some cash pretty bad and wants to sell me this for $600. Is this work that? I am not sure the model # or any details. Someone?

He told me it's a 24". I am trying to get the specs. I am awaiting his text with it. Are there several models of this?

Just one, but it could be BTO.

If there is just one model then you MAC guys should know the specs...I am not sure if he upgraded RAM. What's BTO?

Is this capable of installing the newest OS that was released with the 3GS and run fast?

BTO = Build to Order i.e. custom configurations (hard drive, ram, processor, etc.) Given this model it would be easy to think that it would be BTO considering at the time this was the top of the line...

2.16GHz Intel C2D
1GB RAM but I guess your friend has added more (3GB max)
250GB HD (BTO up to 750GB)
nVidia 7300GT or 7600GT

W/out being BTO, what would this have cost him new from store?

White and assuming it's Intel, it looks like 20" model, so at best it could be a 2GHz, 512MB RAM, 250GB HDD assuming it's stock. It's really hard to guess, but you could call up your friend and ask him/her…

For pricing if my assumptions are correct, you're looking at paying about $700 for the machine new. Seeing that it's a 3 year old model, do you want to pay $600 for an old machine?

The OP said 24" iMac. If that is the case, stock is:
2.16 C2D
1GB RAM (512X2)
250GB HD
NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT with 128MB GDDR3 SDRAM

I'd spend an extra $300 for a new one. Your friend is not ripping you off given current prices, but it doesn't make much sense.

So I can get a new one for about 900 to 1000....Now, but he would have paid 2000 for this one....then? Are you saying $600 isn't really worth paying for this?

The extra $300 you could spend for a new(er) one is much better. You can find used current generation one's for around a thousand that will blow this one away. With that being said, given the current prices you are not getting "ripped off," a quick craigslist search put your friend in the lower part of the price range.

Mac2Sell said it's worth 980$ which I highly doubt. it gave 1300$ for my iMac which is 3 months old and runs circles over white one.

If you want to help your friend, sure go for it but you can get current gen 20" for 999$ from refurb store.

Offer him 500$, it would be OK price

The newest OS released with the 3GS? The 3GS is a phone. Snow Leopard will be coming out in September, and yes, that iMac could run Snow Leopard.

Gotcha!! What would ya say I dont have 1000 to put into a computer now, but 600 I could swing. Would you buy this?

So do I....Will offer 550.

I was meaning they showed it in the conference where they announced the 3GS.

Specs I just got

"IMac: 24" 2.16/2G,250,SD,AP,BT,WLKBM"

The HD is not that big so i would only offer him a max of $550. However you could get a alu imac with slightly better than those specs for around $800

Good call...550 it is...Although I thought I was getting a deal, but that's the actual worth of the computer. Any idea the acronyms he posted?

SD= Super drive(cd/DVD)
AP= Airport (wifi)
BT= Bluetooth

not sure bout the other one.

EDIT- think it might be wireless keyboard and mouse (worth up to £40)

Umm did anyone catch this?
You do realize you cannot run 3.0 anything for a 3GS on an iMac right?

WireLess KeyBoard and Mouse, I think

500$ would be OK

Yea, too slow :D

It might not beable to run snow leopard as well as it should because of the graphics card but it will run leopard just fine.

Think you got confused. 3.0 is for the iPhone. Snow leopard 10.6 is for Pc's.
Btw this pc is supplied with Tiger OS which was released a while ago.

Tiger 10.4 (2005/2006 i think)
Leopard 10.5 (2007)
Snow Leopard 10.6 (2009

Why? Tell me a reason. 7300GT is not supported in OpenCL but it'll run OK. GPU has nothing to do with normal usage like web surfing, all is done by CPU

sorry, thats kinda what i meant. I did not explain it that well. i was kind of thinking for me then as i would make sure i had a supported GPU for my line of work. I want things to render fast. the 7300 may not do it as fast as i would like. It would be ok for normal usage though as like you said that is all run by the cpu and ram.
