I received yesterday a MacBook M1.
As soon as I received it, I made a backlight bleed test.

Here is a picture:

Should I keep it or should I return it? It's acceptable?

Thanks

So it could be described as minor imperfections. That’s all I wanted to know. I just don’t want to keep a defective unit.

Thanks.

Hard to tell from a picture but seems fine to me. Some bl bleed, but literally all LCD’s have that.

I hope one day they’ll transition to OLED for their laptop screens, altho then people will be talking about green tints on low brightness. I feel like there’s pro’s and cons to every display technology and we just need to live with it.

Ultimately the only thing that’s important is it looks good to your eye :)

I'm back.
I returned the MacBook Pro from the first post and i've got a MacBooK Air.
And the screen had reddish tints.

So I have gotten another MacBook Pro.

Here are the photos. The first is the MacBook PRO I returned. The second is from the MacBook PRO that I have now.

Should I keep the one I have now? Do you think it is better than the first panel? Or the same?

I may give up and keep it. Because I see them very similar.

What do you think?

Yes, you are probably right.
Although I just noticed that there was light leaking through the case of the MacBook I returned.

I'll keep the one I have now.
And we will see if in the next generation they change the screen to mini led.

I’m talking about this, the 3 white vertical lines. I zoomed in to make it more visible.

Also speaking about IPS glow, can this be considered as IPS glow?

It disappears when I move my head to the left. Backlight Bleeding does not change when viewing at an off angle. So I assume that it’s IPS glow, right?

Honestly, I wouldn't have returned any of these. They all look totally passable to me. How often am I going to sit there looking at an all white screen? If you can see it while on websites in Safari or something and it bugs you, return it. If not, relax and enjoy your new device. The more you return, the more nitpicky you're going to get. It will drive you nuts in the end.

Not to mention that those were all perfectly good MacBooks that either the store will now lose money on (because they can't sell them as new) or that will need to refurbed from Apple. Keep in mind that during this pandemic Apple is not shipping like before, so now someone else will probably have to wait to get their MacBook because a perfectly good MacBook is being sent back to Apple....

Okay. Finally I have to accept that there is no screen without a minimum of ips glow or backlight bleed. As I've been told, all LCD panels suffer from this in a way. And in the case of the one I currently have, it is not serious. As can be seen in this photo.

What matters to me about the MacBook Pro I have now, is that under normal use, it cannot be appreciated.
It only shows with a completely black screen, with brightness at 100% and in completely dark room.

I should stop testing screens in that way.

Anyway, the MacBook Pro I returned had a defect not related to IPS glow or Backlight bleed.
The fact that light shines through the housing is not acceptable in any case.

Thanks for the tips and help.

If you have to ask others it must be ok, if it doesn't bother you in your normal usage it's fine. Don't obsess over minor imperfections that would probably be unnoticeable if you don't look for them.

Ah, a sensible and reasonable answer, makes a refreshing change ;)

I’ll never understand the compulsion to get a new device and then obsess over finding faults. Yes, we all want a perfect (well as close as you get to) device, but realistically, just use the computer and if there are any actual faults, they will become apparent to you - usually within the first 6 months.

It’s covered by a warranty and you have the option of AppleCare, which I personally always get, simply because if a fault occurs further down the line, it’s quick and easy to get a replacement.

If the display looks good to you under normal use, then just enjoy it. If you see a glaring fault, get it replaced. At the end of the day you don’t need anyone here to tell you what looks ok to your eyes. Trust your own opinion, it’s really the only one that matters.

Personally, I’ve not gone looking for display inconsistencies with my M1. I’ve used it in lighting conditions from bright daylight, to darkness in bed. It looks good to me through them all - but I deliberately have not stuck up a completely black/white/grey screen to look for a problem. I know it won’t have 100% perfect uniformity, I’d be amazed if any do with the kind of backlighting used currently. So long as I don’t see out of control blooming in normal use, I’m happy. Or easily pleased maybe :D

Seems that screens are somewhat worse than they were in MBP 13" 2019 but if you don't see this issue in your normal use I guess it is acceptable.

I should stop testing screens in that way.
Why? I mean don't just go by that how it looks in the photos but consider it an issue only if you see the same things too strong with your own eyes. Remember that camera often makes these issues appear worse than they are.

I agree, that was not acceptable.

You mentioned earlier you had MBA M1. Was is suffering from red tint on the right side with black image and 100% backlight setting in a dark room, or did you see red tint in some other situation too?

Getting a perfect LCD panel is not easy and it is not worth the effort in most cases. What if the laptop breaks somehow in a year or two, your perfect screen is gone again. Back to the lottery. I found that CRTs were less problematic out of the box but they aged poorly. Just my experience.

Be glad you don't have image retention or flicker. Those are the ones that really drive me batty. I'll take some yellowing or IPS glow over those two any day of the week.

I had red tint in other situations, like in forums with white backgrounds.
That doesn’t happen with the MBP M1 screens.

0906742 had a theory that the MBA has a better screens, guess that goes out of the window. I already knew it made no difference. Heartbreaker 🥰

I meant uniformity in bright image and that does not sound very common issue with MBA M1.
Mine is perfect, no red tint in white image, absolutely none.

OK, sounds like you had dud screen in your MBA M1, if there was problem also with white backgrounds.
Did you check if it also suffered from red glow on the right side with black image and 100% backlight in dark room?

Anyway, here is screenshot from my previous MBP 13" 2019 taken with black image and 100% backlight. That was what I consider good even it was not quite as uniform in white image as my MBA M1.

I will admit that after seeing this thread yesterday, I pulled up an all white image on my M1 MBA just to see if I saw any weird uniformity issues. Mine is about as perfect as it gets.

OP: My advice was genuine. I used to be like you. I have a lot of issues with anxiety, and stuff like this used to drive me nuts. I took a lot of my anxiety out on wanting all my Apple devices to be perfect to a level that no company would be able to live up to. Now, a dead/stuck pixel, a gouge in the glass, a dent in the casing, or a malfunction right out of the box? Those things I will return or exchange for. But now that I've gotten my anxiety taken care of, it's nice to no longer care about minor blemishes or imperfections. Find a way to do the same, and your life will be a lot more peaceful.
