Sounds Good

We are trying to nurse you through the wait.

In 2009 March
In 2009 Oct rare second update.
In 2010 May
In 2011 July

We are in may just be patient it is coming.

The igpu graphics will be a nice improvement the 4000 graphics are a lot better then the 3000. So hang in there.

Does anybody have any ideas on what may be in the next Mac mini? Or what do you think the current one is missing? The only thing I can think of is USB3.0. Are there processors faster than the i7?

I have an i7 mac mini ,and I was thinking of getting a refurb $500 base mini from Apple for a home server,..... but if the next mini is a substantial upgrade, then I'd buy that instead and make my current i7 the home server. I guess I'm just curious if any chances are anticipated that would make it worth upgrading.

graphics igpu 4000 is a good improvement. usb3 , second t-bolt, better cpu.

So honestly nothing major. A 2nd thunderbolt would be I there's ting but there's barely enough t-bolt hardware out there to max out a daisy chain. Usb3 would be welcome.

We'll probably see Nvidia 640 or 650 graphics in there too.

Assuming the entire line switches to Kepler based GPUs

I got a mini last month. Not using it much as I am busy with work. I could have wait. The trick is to not come on macrumors forum.

Do you all think they will announce a new Mac Mini at the WWDC or wait until Mountain Lion is released?

Not really good advice. If he's considering Mac Minis, then of course it "meets his needs". So did the last Mini and probably the one before that.

With Apple computers, it's pretty simple - always buy at or near the beginning of a product's life cycle. Either buy the new one (and get the latest technology), or buy the previous generation that is being replaced and get a good deal.

What you don't want to do is buy one NOW, at the end of a life cycle.

Has nothing to do with whether it "meets needs" or not - it's just good sense.
This is absolutely right.

EXCEPT that expectations of life cycle length can go wrong. Take the Mac Pro, people have been waiting for updates for over a year already! Or the iPods... at this point it looks like Apple will never update them anymore, but who would have known that two years ago?

I think all slow sellers including the Mac Mini are facing this risk, so if you have the urge consider buying anyway if you really want/need it now and it meets your needs.

Life's too short to waste on waiting for new models of computers.

I disagree with the mac pro example. many factors to the delay.

right now imacs macbook pros and mac minis are all old. I am close to certain all will be refreshed by oct 1st.

As for the mac pro I am thinking it may never see a new model.

Why do you think mac minis are slow sellers? the mac mini is amazon's number desktop seller.

that is out of every desktop amazon sells not only is it first on the list it has been on the top 100 list for the last 310 days in a row.

google

amazon best sellers in desktop computers apple products are 1 ,2 ,4, 8, 10 on the list

The Mac Pro is a poor example. The delays have been due to Intel's delays in releasing the next generation CPUs for the Mac Pro, which are quite different to the consumer CPUs found in the rest of the line-up.

What I meant is that Apple is seeing massive growth in revenue and profit with the iPhone and iPad businesses that dwarf all the Macs combined. It seems like the hottest Mac models are the iMac and Macbook Air (in the mainstream internet these ones are discussed and speculated most).

So at some point I could see Apple killing more product lines so as to focus on the currently best-selling items and completely new products.

That said, I agree with you that it is LIKELY that the Mini would be updated along with Air, MBP and iMac. All I'm saying is that you shouldn't count on it 100% or you might still be waiting in December or next year.

No question that iPad iPhone makes the lion's share of apples money.

The fact is apple still is the largest computer seller in the world. They sell more computers then any other single company. We need to keep it in mind that apple may have the idea to release all new gear in a 2 or 3 week time period after June 30th. This would make the july august sept quarter huge for sales.

Up here in Calgary, my favorite aspect of rumor season is people that sell in anticipation of new Apple gear.

I just got an i5 base Mini with upgraded ram for $400 - with warranty for a few months too.

So... anyone know where to get an i5 base Mini with upgraded ram plus warranty for $400 ?? :)

It is an accepted fact.. However

Agreed. The technology moves so fast, if you buy a prior generation you're already one step down the road to obsolescence.

Indeed, I watched the tech trends for over a year before I bought my i7 2011 mini. I was comfortable with my G5 setups. They did everything I needed them to a point. Photo editing was okay, DVD encoding/ripping? On Dual proc G5's was ish, but still the job. When I found my i7 with my student/military discount for $600 flat last July I took it. Am I already behind the bell curve? Yup. In the world of computers my young mini is closing in on early middle age. And yet I am typing this on my road warrior PB 1.5 running 10.5.8. So while the hardware and software will always progress, as soon as you buy you are left in the dust. It is all about your expectations and what you want to do with your newly acquired hardware.
Personally, I sat go for the current line, like others have said, wait tell the new round comes out (if/when they do) and troll for a decked out i7 with all the candy some tech-zealot is pushing into the craigslist basket for the newest shinny mac and reap the rewards. :D
The old saying "Work smarter not harder" comes to mind, it takes some serious work to make the bread to show off your newest gear to your neophyte friends, it takes brains to ferret out what you need, how to utilize it and make the highest return on your investment. Then again? It could just be me.

I just hit the Apple store again this weekend. Those MacBook Airs are like magnets, I can't keep myself away from them. But, it will be a lot cheaper to get my feet wet on a Mac mini.

I just bought a Mac Mini server this weekend, I figured that if nothing is announced at WWDC I'll just keep it, otherwise the option's there to get the newer one since it'll be within 14 days.

Had forgotten about that option. What exactly is Apple's policy around all this? How long after a new release are the older models still available and how much of a discount is realistic (say on a MBP with 15" hi res screen). And reverse if I bought a current model now how does the exchange to the new version work exactly and how much does it usually cost to upgrade?
