Sounds like a kernel panic (grey screen right?). Probably bad RAM you got. Nothing to do with Apple I think. You probably should return the RAM and get another.

You can test the RAM withRember. I think it shows wether the RAM is bad or not.

Ditto, sounds like bad RAM. MacCurry, when did you get the RAM? Crucial shipped out an initial batch that they said was MacPro compatible, but they pulled it off the site and recalled any that were shipped out. They've since re-released the RAM, but with the same heatsinks as Apples RAM (the original had heatsinks similar to petites Samsung RAM I believe).

If you've gotten them in the past 2 weeks or so, just disregard the above and call Crucial, it sounds like they sent you bad DIMMs.

Yes, it was a grey screen with the warning to restart or shut down. I could do nothing else at this point except shut down my Mac Pro.

The memory was delivered two days ago on Thursday 31 AUG 06. It was ordered from Crucial on Monday 28 AUG 06. I will call Crucial and complain. All of the other memory I've ever ordered for PCs using Crucial have been very good. I will call them on Tuesday morning. I must say that I am very dissapointed.:( More than likely, I'll simply send it back and get the memory from the Apple Store on-line as I have a $30 off coupon and the purchase will only be $70 more than the Crucial memory. I really don't have the time to mess around and have lots of photo & video to process, so for me I guess its best to stick with Apple.

When it first boots up and I see the pic previews in iPhoto, the extra 1-GB seems to make a difference in speed, but its shortly after that point when opening up the pics the Mac Pro locks up.

It's not necessarily all of Crucials memory... Just that you got one bad stick of RAM. It's really rather common. But hey - I'm no expert :D

Yeah sad fact with memory nowadays, with how much is made, it's cheaper to just ship it all out, bad memory and all and replace those that are bad. They used to be tested a lot more before being put out into the market, it's just a luck of the draw nowadays.

I think Crucial has an overnight replacement or something, so you may want to exchange it through that MacCurry. There's about an equal chance of even the Apple RAM being good or bad as a replacement set from Crucial being good or bad.

I'm running two of the Kingston 1GB modules, but I placed heatsinks all over them. No problems so far. **knock on wood**

I bought four sets of these:
NewEgg

They came applied with tape, so nothing more was needed. I just attached them to the heat spreader.

Assuming that the RAM processors are doing the same amount of work; then the hotter heatsink means its more effective at removing heat from the RAM module than the one cooler to the touch.

That samsung has a heatspreader, not a heatsink.

Checking in to see if Samsung DDRs are still working well...

Hey Petite...
How are those chips working? I've been looking at purchasing some non-generic MacPro memory and waiting for the prices to drop. NewEgg is finally carrying those sticks (I've been searching by model # for a long time) and the price is getting more reasonable.

If you are still watching this thread, an update of your experience would be much appreciated. Thanks!
