put the Mushkin memory in today 2 x 2gb and it is significantly faster for sure. it boots almost twice as fast as before.

everything says 4gb but adding the used and free numbers only adds up to a little over 3gb

way more speed for only $108 isn't bad.

Is this the correct RAM for my Mini?

I realize this is a little off topic, but I'm having trouble finding clear information about iMac memory upgrades.

In one of the recent postings, Heath mentioned two different strategies for upgrading memory. My iMac Core 2 Duo is a little over a year old (Nov. 06) and is a 20" 2.16GHz version. I have just installed 3 GB of memory: 1X1GB and 1X2GB. However, my hardware profile indicates that only 2GB are recognized by my system. Can anyone shed any light as to why this is, and what I need to do to make sure my system is able to use the whole 3 GB of new memory?

Thanks, psquare11

according to Crucials page the max it will accept is
3GB 2+1 single channel SODIMM

if you installed 2+1 and it's only seeing 2GB either the 1GB stick is not seated properly or it is bad.
try removing it and re-installing it. i have read allot of posts about people having a hard time installing memory in iMacs. make sure it goes in all the way.

Is this the correct RAM for my Mini?

For ParishM: Thanks for the tip. Will shut down and examine whether or not the 1GB stick is properly seated.

Thanks, psquare11

For ParishM: You were right on the money... I thought the memory had seated properly, but a closer examination proved otherwise. i was able to properly seat it with some finger pressure. (I guess you can't rely on those silly little insertion tabs!) Upon restart, voila: 3GB!

Thanks again, psquare11

For CanadaRAM: Thanks... I saw an earlier posting from you recommending the guide and had already viewed it. Although I learned valuable facts about Mac memory upgrades in general, the one thing the article doesn't discuss is the need to double check for proper seating of newly inserted memory sticks.

While this seems an obvious thing to do, I was fooled by my earlier visual inspection. Everything seemed right and all fittings went back together without obstruction, and my machine worked afterward. It was only after I reopened my memory bay and applied considerable pressure to the memory sticks that I felt one of them pop into its seat.

Thanks for the tip,

I'm sure the G-Tech G-Mini is cool but it's plastic like the Ministack. The LaCie is all aluminum like the Mac Mini.

That would be a deal breaker for me too. Are you sure? It looks like aluminum in the images, but I can't see where they state that it is one or the other.

i sent them an email last night and they replied this morning.

Parish,

Yes, the G-Mini is plastic rather than aluminum.
