Simple window resizing would continue to be an insult to iPad users and folks should be even more upset as another year goes by with little useful change. Either bring some type of Dex functionality or drop the price on iPads all around.

Doubt it. It will come eventually, but I don't think this is the year. They should really do more, proper display support to begin with and then the option to install macOS software when docked. They've recently patented some new designs which point to what I wanted for years. Now if only they could make a 14" or 15" iPad with M2 and run a hybrid OS on it. I'd have no problem if they'd dump the MBA for it.

You pay the current price for what it is, not for what it might be. Nobody forces the purchase on you.

Floating & resizable windows won't make much difference given the small screen, especially in the 11/10.9in devices. But this kind of desktop mode is instead essential on an external display.
More than actual resizable windows in the display tablet itself I would like things like horizontal split screen or even 3 apps splits (both options exist in Samsung OneUI with the 3 split being one vertical and 2 horizontal, and this does not prevent to add a 4th app in slideover, which again exists in OneUI too). Also allow people to resize the split precisely as the prefer, not to set sizes (again possible in OneUI).
Having said that if I had to choose between better split options and extended display support I would take the latter any day. Even on laptops I don't split screen much, I am much more productive with external monitors (both portable ones and large ones). Even an iPad as a portable monitor is very useful, and I do hope they can improve sidecar.... It would be great if it could support sound, so that my iPad pro could be the speaker of my Mac Mini....

Split screen is only good on a iMac, lame if that’s all they can come up with.
If you have no other option, and you need to reference something, or copy and paste etc. it can be better than constantly switching between full screen apps (although not always, if the documents are not resizable and too small for split screen it can actually be worse than constantly switching). But an external display, even a small one like a 14in portable monitor or a 12.9 iPad pro used as a monitor, is still much larger and more convenient than split screen (unless of course you are in vehicle or somewhere where you either need to have the device on your lap or have no room for a second display).

Everyone that says this sounds like a broken record. Do you really think base model iPad Pros should costs more than laptops, including MacBooks? iPads are neat but lets be real I’ve not seen or met one person, YouTuber, etc that does not have a laptop or desktop in addition to an iPad. They’ll claim they use the iPad as their only device only to do a collaboration video or studio tour where they talk about how they had to switch back to a proper OS months or even a year or so later.

It may sound like a broken record but the fact is that Apple will sell the iPad at prices that the market will bear and you don't have to buy one if you feel it is overpriced. I have 2021 12.9 and a Mini 6 but I also have a laptop and a desktop with no expectation that any one device will replace the others; I view them as complements, used for different tasks.

First of all, the base iPad Pro is 800, which is cheaper than any new MacBook.

It sounds like a broken record because its true. Don't buy an iPad if you don't think it provides enough value as it is now, and don't buy one hoping it will become something else.

I think he is pricing in the Magic Keyboard. Having said that, I agree with buy an iPad (pro) for what it can do now. I bought my M1 12.9 mainly to watch YouTube (through Safari), much better experience than any other iPad (large screen, better screen, better speakers, instant loading, keeps tabs open, allows for higher than 1080p videos in Safari, etc.). I am not expecting to work on it and I love it.

base iPad Pro 128gb here is $1200AUD, MacBook Air 256gb can be had for $150 more, throw in $450 MGK and you are $300 in front lol
or a folio case $109 still only $41 more, bigger screen, better battery, more storage, keyboard. for what a bigger iPhone.

My iPadOS for iPP's wish list...

1. Real external monitor support that includes a real desktop type environment similar to the Samsung DeX mode.

2. Keep improving the multitasking experience. This goes hand in hand with #1.

3. Keep improving the Files App. It is pretty good now, but still needs some work, as does Safari and Notes.

4. I'd like to see a little more flexibility with placing the home screen icons, folders, and widgets.

5. Would like to see interactive widgets with some basic functions that don't need to open in the app.

6. The onscreen keyboard needs work for sure. Auto correct just plain sucks....

7. I think settings is a mess and needs a lot of work.

8. We need the ability to sign in to multiple accounts so families can share the device.

9. Add some more native apps like calculator and weather, and the ability to change more of the default apps.

There are plenty of phones which cost as much as a MacBook, and having a much larger screen is great.

The price is irrelevant if you find value in what it provides. based on how well the iPads sell, lots of people feel this way.

True. Granted, I'm pretty sure the MacBook Air outsells the iPad Pros by a lot. However, the iPad Pros has its own niche despite iPadOS limitations.

The success of the iPad lays in actively avoiding this kind of things. We’ve had a lot of touch-enabled, PC interface-based tablets in the past, and they don’t sell well. Because touch doesn’t work well with precision controls and layers, it’s unnatural — it works with direct control. And it has nothing to do with being a basic or professional user.

For me the thing I want most is improved Home Screen app and widget placement (move away from the iOS top left to bottom right grid). This is where 15 was a regression vs 14

Improved file system (finder?), more useful widgets (calculator?), pro apps, horizontal splits, and a quick note style floating window would be nice too

Reversed sidecar (my iMac as a secondary display to the iPad pro with proper display extension / scaling) and continued improvements to Universal Control (which I love )

I disagree. The use of our hands and fingers to touch and control things is the most natural, precise, and intimate way for humans to interact with our physical surroundings. Hence the reason we were given hands and fingers. My use of touch and the Apple Pencil for notes and drawings is far superior to mouse input. Personally I would choose touch over mouse for the vast majority of my computer use. The only exception to that would be for desktop computer use on my Mac Mini, which I use for email, web cruising, music, and YouTube....all of which I also do on my iPP with touch.

For me to even consider going back to the iPad Pro, iPadOS 16 would need to add the following features:

  • True unlimited background multitasking.
  • Virtual memory with swap.
  • Allow multiple simultaneous audio in and out.
  • Allow multiple simultaneous video streams.
  • Either overlapping resizable windows or at least tiling of 3 or 4 windows with the size of each tile adjustable to my needs and the tiles available in any screen quadrant.
  • Springboard layout with pixel level icon placement with interactive widgets.
  • Last but definitely not least, real external display support.

Indeed, I have never found an iPad useful for me, which is why I am on my fourth Surface Tablet (currently rocking a Surface Pro 8 with i7 and 16GB).

The Surface Pro might not be as powerful in raw power as an iPad Pro, and the OS needs a lot of optimization when used as a tablet - but it is way more capable and allows me to do way more than some beast of a device that runs almost the same things as my iPhone 13 Pro Max.
