I actually think that navigation on an iPhone is just a bit over-rated.

It's not that I don't like Navigon, it's just that I don't think Tom Tom can be much better. There are some things that will never work perfectly and I think navigation on the iPhone is one of those things. Well, until the next model comes out which will correct certain problems like: Start-up speed, latency, losing reception, better integration with audio, battery drainage, etc..

It's like when you get the newest version Final Cut Pro and your computer can barely keep up - I have that feeling with Navigation apps for my iPhone.

Navigon runs great on my 3GS phone. Does everything my Garmin does and more since I can listen to my music collection or an audio book seamlessly while it is navigating.

It takes the application about 5-10 seconds to launch, which is about the same time it takes for my $500 Garmin to start up.

It takes about another 10-20 seconds to lock satellites, which, incidentally is about the same amount of time that my Garmin takes to do the same. If I move my car and then start my Garmin up, it takes about a minute or two to lock sat. Navigon for the iPhone is about the same here too.

So what is it that I don't get with Navigon? Currently traffic, which looks to be remedied soon.

Oh ya, I don't get a 2nd large thing to lug around everywhere I go, and I don't miss that very much at all.

I have taken several hour long and greater trips with the Navigon and the Garmin side by side over the past two weeks and the Navigon has done the same job as the Garmin in all cases, so I hardly see the need to keep two devices when one does the job just as well as fits into my pocket easily.
