I ask this as I am looking at getting an iPhone SE. And I'd like to know if the 1st generation of this tech is good enough for every day use. I've not used Touc ID ever, so I'm just asking.

2nd gen is blazingly fast when unlocking the device, when comparing it with 1st gen. I can even see the animation of entering home screen without seeing lock screen sometimes. This is the most impressive part.
Other than that, both can work reliably.

I'm using both on a daily basis (iPhone 6S and iPad Mini 4).
The only difference is speed.
Reliability is the same.

It is noticeably slower. In some ways it's good because you can use the home button to turn the screen on to look at the time more reliably - on a 6S it will often unlock too quickly.

It's like night and day.

I unlock my finger by just tapping the home button, whereas on the 5s I had to leave my finger on the home button for at least 2 seconds before it recognized it.

It also fails MUCH LESS than the 5s Touch ID sensor. It's ridiculous how accurate and fast it is now.

Yup. I don't want to use Touch ID v1.0 again. Apple should have gave iPhone SE iPhone 6 Touch ID sensor at the very least, not leave it with original 5S Touch ID.

5s and 6 use the same generation TouchID (as do all the iPads including the latest Pro ones).

I'm sure most people know this but just in case I thought I'd share.

When you have your Touch ID set up go back into it and you can keep training it. When you hold the button it will keep learning your print so you can move your finger a little each time so that it learns more of you finger. Helps a lot with the recognition.

What do you mean?

Agree 100% , the technology in gen 2 touch ID is not fully appreciated by most people on these forums. It is vastly superior to first gen.

I personally couldn't go back to a phone using first gen touch id, i would find it unusable

The iPhone 6 Touch ID has a higher dpi, so it's more secure. But it doesn't have the faster technology.

I've only had to enter my passcode like 15 times excluding reboots.

Touch id 2.0 is fast and more reliable. Touch id 1.0 is slower, which is good so you can get a brief glance at notifications, but you have to retrain the sensor about every month or two as it "forgets" your fingerprint. It's really not a big deal as it only takes a few minutes to redo.

Never had to retrain anything nor known anyone that needed to across a few iPhones 5s and 6.

Touch ID 2.0 is super fast; many times it's too soon for me as I just want to turn the display on and instead the phone unlocks.

Touch ID 1.0 worked very well for me. No issues with retraining or anything else

Never had to retrain the sensor on my 5s, 6, or 6s.

When I try to unlock my gf iPhone 6 (I have 6S) I get desperate for the amount of time I need to keep my finger there, granted this is a first world problem...

TouchID 2 is a WORLD of difference from TouchID 1. It's lightning fast, compared to the old one on my 5s; in fact, I have to press my power button (instead of the Home button) when I just want to check the time on my 6s! I love it!

You must hate using your iPad then.

Sounds like a fault.

This has never happened to me or anyone I know.
