Touch ID 2 on my 6s is very fast. Touch ID on my iPad Pro is slower, but it still only takes about 1 second. Both are very accurate meaning they work 99% of the time.

It is noticeably slower. In some ways it's good because you can use the home button to turn the screen on to look at the time more reliably - on a 6S it will often unlock too quickly.

At least when that happens you can still see what time it is. What frustrates me about the 2nd gen is how often I don't get to review my lock screen notifications in the morning when I go to wake my phone.

I check the time by pushing the button from the very tip of my finger where it's not mapped or use a different finger. Seems easier than fumbling for the power button.

I actually prefer the old sensor because I have a habit of using the home button to check notifications and it's impossible to do on the new sensor

Agree 100% , the technology in gen 2 touch ID is not fully appreciated by most people on these forums. It is vastly superior to first gen.

I personally couldn't go back to a phone using first gen touch id, i would find it unusable
Unusable...No offense, but this is one of the most fanboy comments i've ever seen...

Other than that, difference is minimal regarding the speed of one and the other.
The 2.0 fails less but the 1.0 almost didn't fail to begin with

It IS better but being better than something already great is really not that important. I never had any problem with the speed and reliablity of the first gen. Its a nice upgrade to have but no problem at all to not to have it.

I often used the Camera icon which allows you to take a picture without actually starting the phone. As mentioned above Touch ID 2.0 is so fast that it can cause problems. If you use the Touch ID sensor to turn on the iPhone it starts up the phone so fast that you can't even use the camera icon.

Use a different part of your finger? Or a different finger altogether?

Stop making excuses , touch id 1 is slow , why would anyone want slower technology in their phone?

Clearly many people are more than happy with TouchID 1 speeds, and various even find TouchID too fast for their needs.
