2 different genres.... apples to oranges. One is a MMO and another is RTS. If you can list some other games you like I could probably give some comparison on differences.

I played for around a month, got boring for me. But give it a try, it's free for the first 10 days (?) so give the trial a go!

Good luck!

That's the WoW experiance for me. I play for 2-3 weeks then get bored.

I always end up going back to play a bit, then get bored after another 2-3 weeks.

I say download WoW and get to level 20, and if you like the game, upgrade to a full account, and buy the expansions as you need them (buy WotLK when you get to level 70, Cata at 80), so you don't waste all your money at once.

As previously pointed out, WoW and Starcraft are completely different genres, nothing alike, not comparable, other than do you prefer a MMO or a RTS?

What I continue to love about WoW (and can't seem to resist replying to threads like this) is the environment of the game. The landscape, environmental effects, the quest giver interaction, the animations, the atmosphere. It is the best I have seen.

However, starting WoW today is not like it was in it's heyday. Lower character levels are nerfed (not necessarily bad), but I would be surprised if you don't see other players around to interact with at the lower zones. What I like most about these zones is their wild, undeveloped nature. Bunches and bunches of them, each unique, and wonderful to explore. I bailed before Cataclysm and played all most exclusively Alliance (the good guys). ;) If they ever offer a "free to play" WoW, I might have to back just to wander around and visit.

Which brings me to WoW endless trial... If you all ready have an inactive Wow account, can you use it to start new characters for free? If so how?

Zone Summary----------------------------------
Favorite low level zones* are Night Elf: Teldressil, Darkshore. Human: Elwynn Forest, Westfall. Dwarf/Nome: Dun Morogh, Lock Modan.

Other favorite Zones: Duskfall, Redridge, Wetlands, Ashenvale, Fellwood, Arathis Highlands, Tanaris, Stranglethorn Veil, Feralas, Hinterlands, and Un'Goro Crater.

Favorite Expansion Zones: Zangarmarsh, Terokkar Forest, Borean Tundra, Grizzly Hills, and Scholazar Basin.

*zones not limited to species, but can be limited to character alliance.

Im lost i have no idea how WoW works, alliances? Zones? So do you mean you have friends and if they are online you meet up with them and run around with them and kill other people? How do you win if so?

It is still my favorite game but then again, I am not a gamer. I played for like 3 years and then did finally get bored and stopped playing earlier this year but I think I will go back again something soon--I do kind of miss it. :)

You should spend some time on the WoW site as well as the many, many fan sites to learn how the game works and the history of the game. The history is quite complex and takes some time to soak in.

WOW is free to play now at least up to level 20.

New Trial Account or established account?

You have to pick a character from the Alliance or the Horde. For the most part Alliance is prettier (cept for Blood Elves). :)

Zones are areas within the game with specific MOB levels (mobile, interchangeable with the term NPC, non person character). As you gain experience, you gain levels.

Ideally you have friends within the game, which may also include joining a guild and you "run around with them" and do quests or if PVPing it, kill other players. I realize there are some people who love PVP (player vs Player) and I do too in the right setting, but I don't like it when I'm questing. Wow is very level sensitive. Dedicated players can quest with the same people throughout the game, but mostly you'll find quest partners come and go.

New Trial Account or established ?

I don't think you can do it on established accounts. It's for new accounts and you can download the client for free. I believe you can either wait till you reach level 20 before you upgrade to the full retail version or upgrade anytime before. It's not really a trial account in the true sense but it does limit you to level 20.

Sounds like you do not know what a MMORPG type game (like WoW) is.

MMORPG = Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game

This means you are connecting to a virtual world where you are your character, and thousands of other people are doing the same. Your running around the virtual world seeing other real people doing the same in the same world. You can chat, meet, group with.. whatever... anyone playing, whether they are people you know outside of the game or not. While some MMORPGs are free to play, most are not... or only part of the content is free and oyu have to pay for an account to have full access to everything. Accounts are usually a monthly fee.

MMORPG at Wikipedia

For the OP, make sure you know what kind of Server you want before selecting.

PVE Server= player vs environment. It's been a while, listed as a "Normal" Server? Other players can't attack you on a whim, only if you flag yourself for PVP or enter a Battleground.

PVP Server= player vs player. You can be attacked at any time. It makes the questing world a lot more tactical. While questing you are looking over your shoulder for a high level player or a group to come and kill you for their amusement. These are players, not mobs. Some people love it, some hate it. I'm in the later group at least for this game.

Roleplaying Server= Your not supposed to talk about things outside the game.

Yup, and you all log in and out as you want, play with each other, play alone, it doesn't matter. Meet people, make friends, etc, all within your own virtual world.

How do you win if so?
The only winning move is not to play.

I think it would be fun for beginners who haven't played the game before, but I got the game when it first came out and they completely ruined it and tailored it around new players. Basically made it too easy :p.

WOW is the best MMORPG in my opinion. For several reasons I stopped playing it, but somehow miss the game. I've tried RIFT, but it simply doesn't feel the same. It's not true that you must spend your whole time playing: questing, leveling, gearing, is very easy and fast, maybe a bit too much. You can perfectly play casually if you want, it's not the massive time sink it used to be.

I'm currently trying out the Rift 7 day trial. For environment, WoW runs circles around Rift (At least the Defiant starter level and where you pop out after going back in time. 7 days is probably all I'll do. Yes, I've heard the WoW low levels are very easy now and leveling is very fast. Sometimes I'm temped to go back, but have decided I'll wait for Guild Wars 2 or Planetside 2. Actually Planetside might be an easy way to kill a year. ;)

I never played WoW but I do miss Asheron's Call. If they had it for Mac I'd probably fire it up to see of Warstorm (my mage) was still there...

With the exception of the high end grind, I found Asheron's Call much more of an interesting game then WoW. Although WoW did have many better quests.

Many of the pre-WOW MMORPG's actually had more depth.

WOW showed you can dominate the MMORPG market with nothing more than a pretty looking skinner box. So now every MMORPG is trying to be a skinner box. This is a regression from the MMORPG's of the Raph Koster days, which were trying to be virtual worlds where you could do other things beside level grind.

At the very least, WOW is a fun, well-polished skinner box. I'm hoping The Old Republic is better.

Ive been playing WoW since it came out and to be honest the leveling in it is very boring. Most the fun is had when you are at max level doing 5, 10 or 25 man raids, Battlegrounds, Arenas and such. Its pretty much a never ending quest to get the best gear. But once you get that gear Blizzard releases a update and it starts all over. The trial period doesn't really show you that, so everyone that has just played for a couple of weeks never really played the best part of the game. Its a very social game one you reach max level, and is even better if your real life friends play. Gives you someone to stick with you through it all.
