Between SC2 and WOW, you might find yourself not doing anything else :D ... That's what I'm afraid of every time I consider starting playing WOW...

Well i actually played WOW for about a half hour the other day and it is officially the worst most boring game ever thank god the trial edition came out for me to see how awful it is - plus $15 a month lolololol righhhtttttt

That's probably the biggest difference between SC2 and WOW. SC2 is much more "pick-up-and-play" friendly than WOW. I play SC2 almost everyday but only for about half an hour.

Well then... Btw, were you playing alone, all by yourself in your starter zone? Seeing other players does make a difference, but maybe role playing is not your cup of tea? ;)

My honest opinion of WOW: simply not worth the money, when you consider that it costs a LOT more than normal games.

It's not a bad game, inherently, although it's often tedious and a time waster (not an "efficient" game, often simple tasks take a long time).

The problem is the subscription, and the price of the expansions.

$15 a month... is $180 a year... plus if you buy the new expansion, that's another $45 or so...

For $180 dollars, you could buy THREE other really good games (if a new game is $60).

Wow charges a premium high price to play... but it really did not offer me anything that made it worth paying so much more than a normal non-subscription game...

To each it's own. WOW was the only game in my whole life that I was able to play for more than one month. I played WOW for more than two years. When I leveled my first toon, for me it was awesome: discover the world, move from zones to zones, struggle to complete all dungeons (before the facility of the actual Looking For Group tool). Raiding with my two guilds ( a social one, and a more hardcore one) was also a lot, lot of fun.

That's how I feel.

I legitimately bought the game and all expansions, but for the amount of time I play the game, it isn't worth $15 a month, which is why I play on a private server now.

How can you compare them if they are two completely different Genres  WOW is a RPG and SC2 is an RTS

To each it's own.

Exactly! Anyone interested in this game should give the free trial a whirl. Yes relative to other games it's expensive, but it gives you what other solo/multiplayer non-MMO games don't, a persistent coop, pvp, pve online world. You don't get the same scope in a primarily solo game, say like Warcraft. Of course, this environment may not interest you at all.

So if someone says they hate it and it is not worth it, read their words and try to decide if you will feel the same way. But sometimes you just have to give it a shot to know for sure. :D

WoW is “the best” in terms of popularity because:

  • It’s easy to play…for casual players.
  • It’s hard to play…for hard core players.
  • It’s HUGE!
  • It’s female friendly.
  • Although the graphics is low-end, the art is very well made. Music is orchestrated, artists are very creative for what they have to work with because Blizzard doesn’t require a Dell XPS to run it. This makes the entry requirements low while still giving you an “immersive” experience, one of the hardest things to accomplish in a fantasy game.
  • Blizzard has a following because they are known to make a game for the game’s sake, unlike EA, etc. who just have deadlines for titles and pump out games for fad sales.
  • It's continually balanced by the team.
  • They make it easy to find friends (or enemies) to play with. It's a very social game, although you CAN accomplish a lot of things by yourself too if you don't like to play with others and there are ways to be "successful" at it too.
  • It makes you grind if you want stuff, and somehow they are able to hook some ppl into continually seeking that +1% power granting item.
  • WoW is CHEAP to play. For the amount of time many users log in WoW, it has a very high hour/$ ratio.

Warcraft is an RTS, but it was really successful not because of the RTS part (where Starcraft prolly holds the king of the hill award). Warcraft is meant to played online where many users make their own games based on the Warcraft engine. Tower Defense is a popular springoff that came from it…or at lease got popularized by it, for example. And in many early Warcraft user-created games, you saw the basic mechanics of MMO RPG combat. And yes…there are RPG games in Warcraft, as well as co-op arcade type games, and whatever types of games any creative person can think of (including melee maps).

Over at a friends house tonight watching Monday Night Football, while his WoW addicted wife was harvesting mats in the Human starter zones. I spent about 20 min looking over her shoulder and I'm still impressed and at some level long to go back there. It's just too beautiful and a wonder fantasy environment. Here are some screenshots. What could be more perfect visually? :) I have not seen prettier environments in any of the 7 or 8 other MMOs I have tried out. You'll not find more attractive dungeons, caves, and instances. I'm sure some will disagree... Some don't like the cartoon look, but it lends itself to the environment and character/npc builds.

If you want to see more, I have a Photobucket WoW Album and a Environmental Slide Show if the OP feels like browsing... :D

True, no other MMORPG has the same kind of warmth and personality. Music, scenery, character animations, lore, are just too good. Graphics are bad ? Personally I HATE ultra realistic, detailed, looking games and love a lot the colourful, creative WOW world.

I get tempted to go back to WoW because I am longing to play a decent MMO again. I am waiting on Star Wars coming out but the longer that goes without a release date the more I want to just start playing something else. WoW is a great game with lots of years left in it yet, I would happily go back and play it again if i had the time or if Star Wars was delayed even further.

Yeah, like when Lord of the Rings (WoW Lite clone) came out, ppl were raving about the awesome realistic graphics and real looking clouds and scenery. All the time I was there I was like...ya know...if I wanted to see more real grass and skies, I'll just step outside! :D

You can try EVE Online and see if that will hold you till the release. It's a change in MMO setting and it actually got voted 2009 and 2010 MMORPG.com Game of the Year...beating WoW.

Someone asked me if WoW is so perfect, why did you quit?

Ultimately WoW is a great game, but far from perfect, not a living breathing world, a game with a game's limitations- shallow and static, perishable zones, with critters roaming the landscape on tracks, and a narrowly focused goal in your gaming life- kill, collect, escort for xp and gear upgrades. Coordinated group dungeon take downs or the high level raid dungeons that require dedication can ultimately be the most fun you'll have in the game. But after all the landscape is explored and quests completed, until the next dungeon or expansion comes out, the player who sticks with it will ultimately have to rely on repeat content, the daily or raid dungeons over and over again. Or to keep it going they will launch 6 more characters, leveling them up, or checking out the other side (Alliance or Horde) or focus on crafting, spending hours/days harvesting mats (required ingredients) to make things. Most are going to ask, what is the point? Am I still having fun? Many (most?) will hit the wall, but the social aspect of the game can't be under estimated and will keep many immersed.

Why can't the company just churn out more zones? They do, over time, but it's an expensive huge amount of work. If a big rich company like Blizzard can't keep ahead of it's ravenous players, no one can. This is what awaits you in any quest based MMO. You'll use it up, find yourself in the end game, and it will be the beginning of the end. At least for me it was although I know those who are still playing it. Ultimately it is a game and all games end. If I play a game for a year, it has been a success as far as I am concerned. I played WoW for a total of 2.5 years, the most successful of all. :)

WoW is “the best” in terms of popularity because:...

I agree! :)

I have tried EVE already, If Star Wars falls through I would consider playing it as my full time game. As it stands just now I don't want to just play EVE for two months, it seems like a game I could really get lost in so I would want to invest some serious time into it. I will give Star Wars a go first but if that falls through all it leaves me with is console games and EVE to jump aboard! I like to have that safety net!

Once SWTOR hits retail, I'm looking forward to the player reviews. I've been exposed to it and due to it's NDA, can't discuss it yet, but you'll notice I'm in this thread basically remembering the good ole days. ;)

Well I've played it all be it briefly. I'm not under any NDA and I would say it's as close to a WOW experience you can get without playing WOW.

If you like "consoles", check out:

It's a relatively cheap way to playing lots of console type games. They don't have all that many titles yet, but it's growing and they have a few classic gems. It also makes many PC only games available on the Mac...and soon iPad.

Cheers, I have signed up for that, it comes out in the UK on the 22nd of this month so we will see how it goes. I played a bit on the US one but the lag was a bit much since it was going trans atlantic!

I dunno what way to take this, its good like the olden days and you are longing to get back to playing it, OR it's really terrible and you wish you could go back and play WoW again!

You torture me!

Bah! Forget the NDA!

Bah! Forget the NDA!

Well I'll give it a try. SWTOR xx-edited by Bioware net police-xx and especially the xx-edited by Bioware net police-xx but sometime I really feel xx-edited by Bioware net police-xx. There are many xx-edited by Bioware net police-xx and space combat is xx-edited by Bioware net police-xx. Overall I give SWTOR a xx-edited by Bioware net police-xx!

It is a great game but stopped playing a couple years ago. My grades went from 85+ to........60.

Hello

Warcraft, bucket loads of very pretty graphics but no gameplay substance at all.

Level 1 task go kill 10 pigs, level 80 task go kill 200 pigs, it all becomes very very boring after a while :(

No addiction, ah, make that compulsion (cause you quit) is good for studies, unless the compulsion concerns your studies. :)

That is a blatant exaggeration, although you do kill 10-30 things on a regular basis, either for kills for to collect something they have... yes I suppose it could be boring in addition to repetitive. :)
