Is Yosemite really that bad?

There are changes. The new way works for some.
I gladly and quietly accept improvements - changes where the new way is clearly better for me (rather than better for most people but not me).
I don't like other changes where there is little benefit to me - essentially it means that I have to learn the new way to do things. This takes time and effort - when a computer is supposed to make things easier not harder. If it works, why change it?
And then there are things that still don't work. For example:
Yosemite has broken Wifi for my late 2013 iMac 27".
I've had long sessions with apple support people. Done clean installs with 10.10.2. Ensured my router is running the latest firmware. Sent debug logs to Apple...
Apple ARE aware of the problem.
"The response was that Apple Engineering has received reports of this symptom and are investigating. Further updates, if any, may come by way of a software update, knowledge base article or software release."
They didn't have the decency to volunteer this information - it was only when I chased up for progress on their analysing the logs that they admitted the position.
I have no way of knowing if Yosemite is discovering bugs in my Wifi router or if it is a grey area in the specifications. But I do know that it worked fine on Mavericks.
That's the only major complaint I have about Yosemite.
There are other problems e.g. the "classic" layout in Mail somehow does not decode fonts properly so "£" becomes "｣" - but people in USA are unlikely to be worried by such BUGS.
I have only put Yosemite on my "off-site backup" computer, which does not see much use.
Unless and until I can be sure that I can get things to work reliably on my main work machines, they will stay with Mavericks.
And if Apple want me to do a major OS upgrade every year then maybe I will have to give up on OSX.

Whenever I try to use my girlfriends' laptop, the first thing I have to do is toggle WiFi, so that it can see our network, to connect to it.
And before Apple replaced the laptop with a brand new one, it used to kernel panic on a daily basis (only started after updating to Yosemite).
So yes, Yosemite really is that bad. And it's terribly optimized for spinning HDD's, so any older macs are pretty darn slow.

Not my experience on any of the 3 Macs that I have Yosemite installed on. Not sure why you are experiencing the issues you are but for me, Yosemite has been running great. No WiFi issues, no lag issues, no issues at all. Again, YMMV.

My best advice would be you for you do a test drive of Yosemite by creating a new partition on your internal hard drive and install Yosemite on it. Then reboot and use it. If it is not to your liking then all you have do is reboot back to your 10.9 install and delete the partition with Yosemite installed on it.
My experience has been great running Yosemite but at the same time you will see other posters state a different experience. Find out for yourself first hand.
Been on Yosemite. Experienced severe lag, delay on the pointer while using Magic Mouse and Wifi drops.
Tested it both with a "dirty" and clean install. More than once. Got back to Mavericks and it was the best thing I could have done.

For me it's the opposite. Never had any wifi issue, I'm running it on a 1,1 MacPro and it's pretty fast. And extremely stable.
No issues with Yosemite nor any of the other OS's. Of course I know what I'm doing and and making sure I don't put on old stuff on and do a complete clean install.
Curious as I don't own a Mac computer with a retina display. Do you experience any lag issues with your retina display MacBook Pro. The retina iMac I tried at the Apple store only exhibited a mild jerkiness in the finder window when I scrolled up and down in it. Nothing major. Other than that everything seemed to be very responsive.

That's true. I'm keeping Yosemite, but in general terms I find it annoying due to various lagging or input response. Moutain Lion and Mavericks were (for me) more responsive and enjoyable to use. I keep hoping that with every update it will improve, but it's just not happening. I'm now looking forward to 10.11+
I agree it's ymmv. i have fresh installed on my base '12 mini several times and after about 1-2 days it starts messing up. Spinning beach balls for long periods of time, have to rebbot every few hours, constantly hung downloads in the mac app store, but most of all lag and spinning beach ball. Seriously, I had a dell laptop that I got in 09 and this is much worse even now (gave it to one of the kids when I got this one) my wife's 09 samsung laptop also is smoother. I like osx, this is my first mac, but it's getting very irritating. I have been running computers since dos and have not experienced this much trouble since windows 98.
If I could go back to mavericks I would, but I do not have mavericks in the store even though it came on the mini.

It's fine. Not particularly more useful than previous models, but it was free and continuity is pretty great.
Having to reboot every few hours sounds like something is not normal. When you say you did a fresh install did you migrate your old data from Mavericks to Yosemite? Maybe something related to that. If you are willing to try an experiment please try this, create a new partition on your internal hard drive and install Yosemite on to it. Then reboot to the new partition, don't reinstall any of your old data your apps. Just use it like it is and see if it still has the same issues that you described. If it does not then the issues you are having on the primary partition has something to do with what is installed on top of Yosemite. I know I would be irriatted if I experienced what you described. I have been using OS X since 10.2 days (some 12 years now) and I have never seen a situation where OS X needed to be rebooted as often as you described.

I did not migrate anything from mavericks, it was a clean yosemite install. I downloaded yosemite and put it on a usb drive, did a bootable install. I have re installed several times. I am pretty disillusioned with osx.
I may try that, but I am going to get a copy of mavericks and try it first a clean install back to it. I am downloading now, but it is slow. It's ridiculous that this came with mavericks, but there is no way to download it from the store. I like my iphone a lot, and plan on getting an ipad mini soon, but towards the end of the year this may be an itunes server.

If I get a smooth experience before I do something drastic it will make all the difference in the world as I do really like os. If I get the ssd I think that would do it.

as others have said, YMMV. but i've been running OS X Yosemite on three Macs, a 2013 iMac (i forget the exact specs, but base model, with a traditional HDD), a 2010 MacBook Pro with an SSD, and a 2007 iMac. The 2013 went from Mavericks to Yosemite and i feel like its been bogged down. the 2010 MBP has a clean install of Yosemite and feels amazing; it previously had Mavericks but still felt fluid. and finally the 2007, it certainly feels like new life was breathed into it, jumped from Mountain Lion to Yosemite with improved boot times (not by much) and increased responsiveness. Though to be honest, the 2007 is just a machine i remote into to handle file transfers... The only Yosemite experience i'm not liking is, ironically, on the newest Mac...

I find this hilarious and embarrassing. A properly programmed UI should not exhibit a mild jerkiness on this kind of hardware.
Seriously looking at a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon to complement my aging MBP 2010 17". Still hoping Apple has this sorted out when (Q1 2016?) a brand new MBP is released. Love the hardware, but software wise I can very well live on "the other side".

Just wanted to add to the mouse delay that I was using a mouse at first (non microsoft) and it was really bad. Delay, jumpy, choppy, took a while to get the pointer on something. I broke down and got a magic trackpad and it went away, but it's still irritating that i have to buy stuff to fix problems that should not be there.
