If you have a new 7,1 that is nosier, could you let us know where you are. Some of the noisier units have been reported outside North America. That's probably not the difference, but for now, it's worth noting.

One of the things I suspect that made the 6,1 nosier was not the machine itself, but all the external PCI and drive cages...

The MP7,1 is a lot quieter than MP6,1 - Ours come from Shanghai

None of them have spinning disks or extra fans or any of that.

So quiet I thought it was broken at first boot.
Yeah, till you boot it for the first time, turn your back cause you got distracted by somebody and suddenly it starts to yell at you what language you want it to use.
Those internal speakers are LOUD! Almost fell off of my chair when it did that.

Maybe. But right now it's highly anecdotal. I wonder where @lovejimbo got his machine from. That it's louder than his cMP is kind of shocking.

China build - it's quieter than most windows workstations I've come across, but louder than my old 5.1 in a fair few situations...

It's the same story with other 2019's my colleagues purchased, maybe it's the workload... After Effects/C4D/Premiere in tandem, back and forth throughout the day, lots of multi cores/GPU and single threaded spikes for demands?

It's not an unpleasant noise, but it's definitely sucking air!

Would you say its definitely noticeable when sitting about 1.5 - 2 meters from the machine?
Because that's my situation, even when the system is not doing anything thats taxing, and I'm wondering if this is an abnormality.

So far it seems to be an outlier, and the outliers for whatever reason to be concentrated to the China production lines. I dont think that's at all conclusive at all. Just based on the very early reports here.

Anyway, that is my round about way of saying it might be worth bringing it back to Apple and complaining you think it's too noisy and demanding a replacement.

I just hooked up one of our old MP6,1 in target disk mode to make a last copy before I wipe it ...The noise of the old MP6,1 is really loud compared to the MP7,1 .
Those that have a loud 7,1 (without starting to stick a microphone in a vent - that's just silly) return it while it's still within the period you can return it as that's for sure not normal for a 7,1.
If it's beyond the return period ... applecare ... and get it fixed there.

No idea what is causing people issues.

my 16 core is near silent under heavy AE/premier render even quiet in prorender In cinema 4d which is really not optimised!

It gives me hope to hear that a lot of people find it near silent whilst mine was louder than an iMac and PC (more info here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/the-new-mac-pro-is-not-that-quiet.2221291/).

If it’s a side blower fan manufacturing issue - which is the leading causing of noise at idle - then it might just be an issue of replacing the fan at an Apple Store.

Its entirely possible though that it being louder than an iMac is normal? Really don't know but maybe someone who owns both can tell us more?

What dB is your room at? (You can use Decibel X iPhone app). I would guess that anyone above 35 dB wouldn't hear the Mac Pro and refer to it as "silent". It could be possible for sure. I'll hopefully have more info on Wednesday when Apple said they'd get back to me.

So I just downloaded that app and put my phone on the desk (since holding it would make the results inaccurate) and my room is at around 26 dB. The phone is at the same spot as where I'm sitting, with the microphone pointed in the direction of the MP. Edit: MP is at a distance of about 2 meters.

You have a really quiet room like mine, which is 24dB ambient and 26dB with the MP on.

Anyone else with a 25dB room hear the MP clearly?

If anyone has a 'silent' or very quiet Mac Pro at ~25db ambient room noise, we'd be very interested to here.

Parzival, I'd give Apple support a call and let them know you're not happy with the noise. I have a case open with them and hope to hear back from them today. Will update when I know more.
