The only problem I've seen with Transmission is that on my poor old iMac G4 it spikes CPU usage sometimes - causing other applications to beach ball.

This has happened to me once while using Transmission. I opened up 4 torrents each with thousands of seeds/peers and it grinded my Mac to a halt. Activity monitor showed that the HDD was writing at over 45MB/s solid(which kinda scared me) causing the HDD to make a noise I've never heard before (like a really fast clicky noise). I immediately forced it to shut down. I could really see how Transmission could cook a HDD in a case like this. Luckily I stopped mine before that happened.

Ever since I started using Vuze, I haven't had a single problem. Not to mention it downloads torrents WAY better/faster than Transmission will ever be able to.

That's not a bug, that's Transmission processing the downloaded file.

I've never had a single problem with transmission on Leopard. 50 + transfers pretty much 24/7.

I appreciate that some people may be experiencing problems with transmission, but to go on to state as a fact that if your mac is crashing it's because of transmission is a little bold.

No your wrong, it is a bug. Transmission was completely locked up during this, I couldn't even force-quit it. Plus, there is absolutely no way that I could download movies at 45MB/s. Seems we have some Transmission Fanboys in here...

Transmission has a bug in it whether you like it or not. Just because your not on the receiving end of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Look at all the people that have reported that there is definitely something wrong with Transmission. Ignorant newbie .

Transmission is a buggy choke-fest on my Macbook Pro and Mac Mini. It starts to hang, it crashes, runs slow because of the hanging, etc. I used to love it, now its the bane of my existence. Works for crappy public torrents like the Pirate Bay, but for private trackers where you can push 7+MB/sec down, good luck, it will just die. It chokes at 800KB/sec down too. That is NOT a good torrent program.

Please at least attempt to refrain from the personal attacks.

There could be any number of factors causing the lockups you describe. It could be a combination of programs you're running, of which Transmission is one. It's a bit ridiculous to call those Transmission users who have been having no issues (like myself) "fanboys" just for sharing their opinions.

The more I read this the better it gets. So, even if someone is running the program on their computer absolutely crash-free it is buggy just because YOUR computer is crashing??

I have to say I think it's a little ridiculous for you to be calling others 'ignorant' when you make statements like that. ;)

It's going over and moving around all the existing data.

Whenever your hard drive is getting written to/read from that fast, your system is always going to be extremely slow.

Another user with zero crashes/problems with Transmission... ;)

Never had a Transmission/OS X problem when I used it.

Yet another tally against.

It's going over and moving around all the existing data.

Really? Wow, I wish I could say the same. I have installed Transmission on my Macbook Pro, Mac Mini, and Macbook Air. Same problems all around, it only runs correctly on my work PowerMac G5.

So, I must ask, what are you guys doing different? Throttling speeds? Custom network settings somewhere? Magic? I ask because as I said, 3 different systems, exact same issue. All systems have different software. I even tried it on my FRESH OS X install on my Air. Nope.

Here is a 384 post thread on the topic: http://forum.transmissionbt.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4564

So what is it guys? Public trackers that have bunk speeds? Public trackers work fine for me because the speed is so slow, but as soon as the app starts pulling around 800KB/sec, its time to die. Always. On all 3 Intel Mac systems.

EDIT: Here is a video of what I am talking about. The capture utility didn't capture the spinning beach ball, but just watch download speed stall, resume, then stall. http://steve.blogme.us/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/transmissionscreensnapz002.mov

Transmission had a terrible flaw that affected some people, including me with system freezes and crashes. They've since patched that.

Currently my HDD is operating extremely slowly (sign of failing I guess) so if I run any torrent, even a single small one, my mac can freeze up because the HDD cannot keep up.

I have run torrents (saving them on the External HDD) and have no problem, iTunes didn't even skip a beat. I will be replacing my HDD soon on the imac (hope all goes well). If completed successfully, Transmission will no longer be an issue.

As someone else stated, Safari has worse bugs causing it to crash, even the latest release crashes on certain sites, but it isn't consistent. I'm guessing it's flash content that causes some error

I love transmission and I have been using it over Vuze until today. Not anymore.

I don't know if it's related, but something happened to my leopard this afternoon and it made me very upset. I had to do an archive/install system recovery to get everything working again.

I was downloading something when transmission became irresponsive and wouldn't start anymore. Everytime I tried to run the application, it crashed. It happened out of nowhere, I wasn't even on keyboard when it happened the first time. No matter what I tried (resetting settings, downloading again, etc) it would still crash as soon as I clicked on the .app icon on dock.

I tried restarting and unfortunately found my system unable to complete the restart process. It would give me the blue screen just before the login screen and would flash there for a while then get to the login screen. When I tried to type something or even waited for a bit, blue screen would take over again. The system kept this loop for about 40 minutes when I decided to restart in single user mode and check the file system using "fsck -fy".

After that I tried booting the system and it failed again. I tried using the restore DVD disk to repair disk permissions and it failed during boot again, same problem.

Then, I looked for the blue screen error during boot on google and tried the archive and install method that some dude describes in this forum.

I finished the instalation and the system booted fine. Transmission is still not working. I finished all the updates, deleted transmission for good and I'm using uTorrent for mac now.

Though it's still beta and lack a lot of features, as far as I can see, it gets speeds that transmission never got on my connection. At least, for now, everything seems fine again.

When I looked on google for a transmission crash problem, I found this thread and I wanted to share this information with the community. I don't know if it was really a transmission related problem but it happened when I was using it, the application never worked anymore (everything else appears to be fine) and I switched to uTorrent.

For the sake of safety, I won't use transmission anymore. :S

This issue identified and temporarily solved for now.

Please people, before meandering on with unsubstantiated chatter here, read the thread on transmissionbt.com site mentioned here a couple times, specifically you will find a work around to the clearly identified issue with Leopard on this page:
http://forum.transmissionbt.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4564&start=330

I'm a certified Mac technician of over 6 years and I can assure you I had all the issues described on that thread of network slowdown, other apps continuing to work then after interacting with the computer a little fairly quickly crashing. I also had Yukon ethernet adapter errors in logs other's have identified. And usually coinciding with my scheduled times to change Bandwidth speed limits.

I eliminated hardware (looped hardware tests, HD surface scan, swapped RAM, ran computer from another hard drive) and most obvious software issues (archive/installed new OS, and running from another HD reproduced same issues).

Almost went back to Vuze begrudgingly as I really like Transmission especially for speed limits (have internet quotas where I live) and the web interface (monitor torrents from my iPhone when away ;-) but adding the hacks to my System Control conf file outlined in the link above reduced my half a dozen or more crashes per day to none-for at least 2 weeks now.

plus this thread is over 13 months old. I only have problems with transmission when i remove a file without first removing it from transmission first. Ie; i move the complete file that is seeding into another spot (external, desktop, where ever that may be), then transmission will crash. Only problems that i have encountered, thus far.

I do find that Transmission pretty much takes over my internet connection but I don't really care about that--I only use Transmission when I'm not doing other stuff on the Internet--all other computer functions are fine. I don't limit anything on Transmission and it seems to work just fine as far as stability is concerned. I've used it for about 6 months.

I never really liked transmission, i guess if you want an extremely simple app that downloads torrents, its for you. But i would rather have the features and the interface of Vuze. Utorrent worked great for a while for me and then with the new update the downloads would stop every 5 minutes, making it impossible to do anything. Vuze has worked great so anyone trying to find an alternative torrent client, try Vuze.
