Guys guys guys. I would NEVER EVER have my cats declawed, however many times they make me bleed or destroy my house. It is totally wrong and inhumane as has been already said. I was only kidding when I said I might change my mind. Besides, if you read my earlier post you will have noticed that I am engaged to an RSPCA Inspector.....do you really think she'd let me even if I wanted to?! We actually trim our cats claws every now and then just to keep them down to size and so they don't hurt each other. As has been echoed in this thread 'Please please please do not declaw your cats!'

I think I will apologize to any people that I may have offended before this gets too heated. I stand by what I said earlier, I believe it is up to the owner. But this is just my opinion. I respect everyone elses, but most everyone makes the decisioin based on what they are use to. If a kitten is declawed at such a young age to the point that they had almost no chance to use them, why would they miss them? They only had them for a short time. It's like when you have a tooth pulled. Hurts a little at first, but you eventually learn to cope and go without it. I could give a sensitive example more related to an optional alteration of males at birth, but I won't get into that one. Same concept, bigger scale, no?

Don't worry, you haven't offended anyone (and I hope we haven't offended you). I just ask that next time you get a cat please recognize that declawing is cruel, and consider the alternatives - keeping claws trimmed, providing alternatives to furniture to scratch, and teaching them what is and is not appropriate behavior. Despite what some people may say, it is actually pretty easy to train a cat.

Anyway, in keeping with the theme of this thread, here are some more piccys of my two.

I'm not offended. I will keep in mind the alternatives.

Anyhow, here are my two cats. The one on the left is Kitty Kitty, and the one on the right is Whiskers. We had to have Kitty put down two years ago. We took her to the vet because we thought she was sick, but he found an abnormal mass in a very common place that cats get cancer (I don't remember what it was called). She was 10ish. Whiskers was put down three years ago. He was 19 and really old. He was having kidney problems and a few other things. (Sorry the quality of the picture is really bad. It's from the good old days of take picture, get developed, scan, share.)

Exposed belly....

I have a cat that comes round to the house every few days. It lives about 3 houses down from me...

As soon as she comes in, she jumps up onto the couch next to me & rolls over to expose her belly when you pet her. She enjoys it so much that she wriggles around on her back, treads air & drools.

She adores having her belly petted, but I know plenty of cats that don't!!

Noodle (see pic) doesn't mind it either, as long as she's relaxed, but she'd never scratch or bite you in a million years. This is put to the test when occasionally she has to be bathed, take a pill or have her flea treatment....

Ok so I may be changing my views on declawing after having broken up a fight between Ethel & Chewy earlier and sustaining the following injuries....

Don't you just love owning cats!!!!
Yow :p I've had a few like that. I was always told that you should never break up a fight between 2 cats. Something along the lines of building up a grudge. Anyone back this up? Or refute it? Or was I told that so I wouldn't end up like MacRy? ;)
BTW MacRy is Chewy named after the Wookie?

If I can actually get my two cats to stop fighting, I'll pet both of them on the head simultaneously to try to thwart jealousy. Likewise, if I see one trying to sneak up on the other, I will always warn whichever cat is the prey. ;) I have yet to end up with scratches like Macry's from my own cats.

I hate to see them fight. They generally don't go at it too hard but occasionally they'll just go ballistic and really try to hurt each other so i'll intervene then just to get them in separate rooms. I'll heal just fine but i'd hate to see one of my little lovelies lose an eye or something.

Chewy is rather sadly named after the wookie i'm afraid. I'm not a big sci-fi nut it's just that my fiance thought that Chewy would be a cute name (because of her fondness for chewing things), without actually realising that I agreed because it made me feel like Han Solo and thus about 5 years old again
