Tested. HEVC issue.

There is no hardware HEVC decode in 10.13 yet. Better avoid it until 10.14.

My iPhone still 6+, but there may be a setting in 7+ to deselect HEVC, they that.
Interesting. Does that explain why my 2014 iMac plays it perfectly?

Also, thank you! Very much appreciated!

Ha! I can’t believe that was it!
OP, working with HEVC is pretty ambitious on a cMP.
We’re lucky Mojave might change that for RX 580 users.

The cMP can play that in preview without any issue. But it seems since the FCPX detect the RX580, therefore, try to use the RX580 to play the HEVC video. But that’s actually not available in 10.13 yet. Therefore, cause an unexpected issue.

I personally feel this is a silly bug.

With the GT120, FCPX default to use the CPU to play the video, therefore, no issue at all.

I am almost 100% sure this bug will be fixed in 10.14 becasue the RX580 is the Apple recommended GPU for 10.14. (They never say RX580 is supported on cMP in 10.13)

Anyway, this is another bug report to Apple.

That answers that then. Thank you!

Same for me. If I import an HEVC file from my iphone, FCPX crashes or I see black video. The same clip, in Motion or in Quicktime, works perfectly.

So, can someone try if in Mojave Beta the card works better? Tks!

Can I just say this thread should be held up as the model for questions and troubleshooting? I just searched for possible compatibility problems between FCPX and the RX580 I've got coming to me in the mail, and stumbled on this thread. Wow, nice job. No impatient "experts" and a very humble OP. Bravo.

For anyone that want direct edit H264 or HEVC in FCPX, please follow this thread to activate video hardware acceleration for your RX580 on cMP.
