Hi all,
for the past few days i’ve been having issues with my ipad׳s touch sensitivity. some times it won’t respond to simple hand gestures like swiping right or left. Also for example when i try to scroll down on facebook it stopped responding immediately.. only after a few attempts it responds.

I have noticed that these issues do not occur when i use the apple pencil. I‘ve been using the iCarez mate screen protector for 2 months now without issues, so not sure if its connected. I tried updating to latest software But no improvement.

any suggestions? Thx

I just saw it before within using mail...ipad pro 12.9...there's no rhyme or reason as to when it happens but does in other apps too briefly. Have noticed too that the pencil works no matter what but finger not. I've done the tricks to prevent it too.
Another weird thing is I've opened up the iPad in landscape view and the screen would be upside down...I have to turn it around and what not to get it to turn around. i don't know if this is a ios13 feature. lol

You must have downloaded the Australian version of iOS 13 😱😂😱😂

I have an iPad Pro 10.5 and had a screen protector on it since day 1. Never had a problem with sensitivity until a couple of months ago. I figured it might be a bug, but it kept getting worse as time went by. It got to the point that I was having trouble typing. I removed the screen protector and gave it a good cleaning. It feels brand new again, no sensitivity problems anymore. I'm not saying that this is the solution to your problem, but it worked for me.

I’ve noticed the same thing lately. I attribute it to iOS13 bugs. It was worse a few updates ago and has steadily been getting better. It’ll probably be fine as the updates keep coming

I’ve had the same problem since the update for some reason the sensitivity has changed I have an iPad Pro 10.5

I have to admit, iPad OS 13 has been the first time bugs and issues have genuinely plagued me to the point where it's stood in the way of my productivity. Sad times.

ok so couldn’t handle it any longer and decided to remove the screen protector and clean the screen with a cloth. First off - Wow what a beautiful screen it has (didn’t realize the extent the mate screen protector reduced the viewing quality...). ... secondly and most importantly, though only just removed, the problem seems to be solved (knock wood). How weird cause been using it for at least two months with no issues.....

You're lucky!
I don't think you're having the hardware problem with screen responsiveness most of us have here. The main and most severe problem with the iPad (that plagues a very large amount of users) cannot be solved by anything. Here is what users reported:

It may sound silly but toggling Bluetooth off/on resolved touch issues with my previous 10.5. This was with iOS 12.3.1 though but could be relatable. Made me wonder if the display/software has an issue discerning finger or pencil input, though I doubt this possible since they work in unison but toggling BT did the trick for some time.

Thank you for the suggestion, a lot of us tried switching Bluetooth and WiFi on/off, various connection settings, pencil, Accessibility options, Pro Motion, Factory Reset, Network Reset, restore from backup, cleaning iPad, rotating, putting at different angles. Using different Apple genuine chargers, backside protectors (I don’t have any screen protectors), tweaking almost all Settings on the iPad and removing/installing different applications, using different versions of iOS.

Nothing helps in the long run. After 3-12 months many iPads become unusable without any possible fixes.

Lots of posts on here about touch disease. I had it on my 10.5 and then on my 11”. Apple genius tested my 11 and said it was a hardware issue and they swopped it for a new one

I have had my 10.5” for a year and half now with no issues what so ever until the last 6 weeks. It freezes up, not responding to anything except a hard reset. I’m grateful for that but is very irritating. I could upgrade it but that seems useless for this issue. On mine I would guess it started with one of the updates so Apple needs to get it corrected!

Unfortunately if you caught a hardware iPad malfunction it just happens at random times to new and refurb iPads, and cannot be fixed by any Apple updates (many of us tried through these years, the issue dates back to 2017 and still not fixed on the new 2018s iPads).

Update - after using my ipad pro for another day without the screen protector, i can say for certain the issue is NOT resolved, perhaps just a little improved. The screen is definitely not responding normally, for example even now while i’m typing this post i have to sometimes press a letter 2-3-4 times until it responds. Also when i press links/buttons it needs a couple of presses until it responds. Oh and there is still issues with scrolling... doesn’t always respond (needs a few attempts).

I’m seriously disappointed by this... i spent a ton of money on this ipad only few months ago :/ and i bought it at an apple premium reseller... now what am i supposed to do, i doubt they will replace it :(

Sorry to hear that and welcome to the club :(

Is the touch disease isolated to the iPads or do the phones get it too?

Some iPhones do get it too. I replaced 3 iPhones 8 a couple years ago until I got the working one at Apple Store. I was lucky it was still under warranty (I wasn't so lucky with the iPad Pro 2017, the issue started right after warranty ended up).

Record the issues on your iPhone / Camera or whatever and take it right back to Apple Genius bar

Its what I did and because I had proof, they exchanged it for another one

@DragonX thsnks for posting all the links.

I keep trying with iPads because I cannot quit the drawing apps. Just bought another Air 3.

At any rate, I also appreciate the tips folks mention.

I do hope Apple sorts this out though, 3 years already.

Good luck all.

Thanks! :) I personally switched to Surface (almost), not overpriced, more drawing/productivity apps, better screen, stylus is the same, Microsoft doesn't hide from hardware problems and fixes them.

I haven't found the Surface, its pen or art apps worked for me, but I am glad it works for you and others. Not starting a flame war and I certainly understand the move away from Apple.

I tried, for me, I am not ready to make that move.

Bleh. Ever since chatting online with a support representative and setting up an express exchange my gen 2 iPP 12.9 has been behaving perfectly. Never thought I’d be wishing for the issue to come back but I’m fearful of it passing inspection once returned and being charged for the exchange. LOL

Just started having this issue as well on my Pro 10.5 in the past few days I’ll pick it up and the screen goes funky and unresponsive. A reboot fixes it and its usually fine for the next few days until it happens again. Hopefully it’s just a software problem as I only started having this problem on 13.1.3
