It has begun; App store for OSX ruining my iMac experience

App store for OSX is already ruining my iMac experience before its even out. Recently i updated app "rivet" and i couldn't make dock icon disappear and its a big deal as this app should just run in the background and not interfere, before update i would only have menu bar icon which was perfect. So e-mailed the support and reply was "Sorry - the dock icon is required by the new Mac App store." App store is not even out, and i do not have any beta version installed...Apple is beginning to control OSX as they do iOS....sad
 
You're looking at it from the wrong angle. Apple was merely allowing you to not have a Dock icon before, and now they decided it was their right to put the requirement back in.

Seriuosly, if you expect control over your operating system, hardware, and software, why did you buy a Mac in the first place?
 
Thats the beauty of the free market, somebody will eventually make a utility that removes/hides icons from the dock. Give it a few weeks.

Simply because i couldn't take windows anymore and needed a new computer badly simple as that. And i don't have issues with lack of control over operating system or hardware....nor i did about software until now...I just hope developers will at least make 2 versions of their software if they choose to be on app store one that meets app store requirements and 2nd that meets consumer requirements available at their website.

iStat Menus and 1Password break Apple's rules, so you don't have to worry about them. They will never be on the App Store, at least in its current state.

Suggestion to OP: Ask developer to create a non-Mac App store version, without the silly limitations? Worth a shot. Else, there is Dock Dodger.
 
Pretty soon people will have to jailbreak their home computers to get the full functionality back...:rolleyes:
 
If you want control over you OS to a fine tune level. Why did you buy a mac? It's like complaining that you can drag that all mighty apple bar off the top of the screen.
 
I already e-mailed asking the developer if there are any plans for 2 versions of the software and if perhaps they can give me a few lines of code to modify the app for time being (i kind of doubt that they would give it to me but worth a shot)
 
I just tried dock dodger and it works beautifully with rivet. Give it try. Works just like old times.

Works great with dock dodger! But makes me wonder what else might be restricted that i have not noticed yet with this app and other apps in a near future

The absolute "need" isn't there, I agree.

However, the opportunity to draw more people into the Mac world by recreating the wildly successful iOS-based App Store experience, and thus sell more high-profit-margin Mac hardware, would be rather irresistible to Apple, I'm inclined to think.

yeah i thought they would maybe not be allowed anyway. good suggestion to suggest a good ol' web download app.
 
If it is really going to kill you having to look at extra dock icons either Hide your dock or get the inevitable 3rd party fix to hide specific icons. It is not the end of the world yet we still got 2 years
 
Sorry to resurrect but I did a google search and found this.

I really wanted Rivet for my mini but the damned dock icon would annoy the other half (her mini is a part time server, since she rarely uses it hehe) however I noticed one thing.

They say that Rivet has to have a dock icon for App Store rules, however, Alfred and Caffeine which were both downloaded from the store, run in the notification area and do not require dock icons.......

Bit of a white lie from TLAF perhaps?

Went with iSedora instead, and besides, Rivet aint even in the App Store yet either! So they've forced a permanent dock icon on everyone for no reason!

Thanks for the warning. Now I know that I won't be buying anything from the Mac App Store unless I REALLY need it and can't get it otherwise. That is surely a very lame system Apple came up with there...

That is not finetuning. Besides you have always had control over your Dock. Apple are really pushing it these days and if they continue this trend (and Lion seems like another step towards making OS X turn into iOS), I think they are gonna loose out in the long run...

Remember, a lot of Mac users are former Windows users who got tired of the problems with Windows and just wanted a smoother OS. But they wanted an OS nevertheless, not just a bunch of Apps with fixed icons, fixed everything where they can't adjust things to their need. What's next - the desktop will be gone and you won't be allowed to show harddrives and documents on it - only Apps purchased through Apple will be there?
 
Still, the Mac App Store is just plain lame. I ran it a couple of seconds ago just out of curiosity (I used it previously once to get the Twitter 2.0 app) and it offered me an update to the Twitter app. Wow. This is sooo not-Apple. This update should be checked for in the background, just like the Software Update does, and offered without running the App Store app.
But the message I've been shown when I clicked "update" was even funnier. This is so lame compared to Sparkle updates...

At least you can delete the appstore icon from the dock. ;)

I have updated one of my home Macs to 10.6.6 and this was the first thing I did. Opened the the store once though, realized I need an account for free apps ( :rolleyes: ) and removed it never to be opened again.

If you don't like the appstore like I do, simply don't use it.
