It's not that I'm not getting the feature that I want. It's that you guys are blowing up the smallest of features/changes and making it look like it's the next coming of Jesus.

Seriously, it's a bug fix release of iOS 11 for the most part. Small changes have been around. If you want a list of small changes like this for a previous major release, just look for one and then you'll find that it's at least 2-3x longer than what you just posted.
Performance improvements alone could justify calling it iOS 12. Fixed notifications, AR, and other things simply add to it. I'm currently running iOS 12 on an iPhone X and iPad Air 2, and neither device has ever felt this fast and smooth, especially the Air 2. And this is just the first beta... it's only going to get better.

Performance improvement was literally the one line that appeared in all .1 releases prior to iOS 12, by the way. Heck, that's what they have on MacOS as well.

And I am running iOS 12 myself, on my X and 6+ and iPad Pro 9.7 and iPad Air 2, etc... that's not really a credential thing. In fact, having experienced iOS 12 myself, it feels even more like iOS 11.5 because not so many obvious changes have occurred aside from performance.

If that's the standard for a "major release" these days, then clearly I have been mistaken.

And again, I wrote earlier that it doesn't matter in the end because I realize that Apple's MO in this case is to just have a major release every year, regardless of what it brings.

Also "this is only the first beta" is not a good excuse because we all know betas do not get new features added. They only get changes when something breaks.

Yes, but you and I both know that except for a select few occasions, the "performance improvements" line in release notes is rarely observable. Certainly never to this extent. In any case, I made the comment about this only being beta 1 because performance will get better as time goes on.

And again, performance improvements aren't the only thing added to iOS 12. In my opinion, it's the biggest thing along with improved notifications, but there are many more changes and additions as well. It's clear that you don't care about the other things in iOS 12, so of course it won't be a big update for you.

Improved notifications? You do realize we had the ability to group notifications in iOS 9, yes?

A lot of the "new features" are really just reverting back to the behavior of the past updates.

Even the improved performance is really reverting back to the performance of iOS 10.3.3, and even so, home button delay is still a real issue.

So that's why I can hardly call this an "update." Again, it's not because I don't care about the changes. They just are not that substantial. Unless you started using iOS devices last year... Those of us who still remember as far back as at least iOS 9 know we had most of this stuff back then.

And that was 3 years ago.

Sooooo useless 3 forum pages!

Ahem I know right? Such a whiny little ****.

It's a free update, take it or leave it. It fixes a ton of performance issues, adds Siri shortcuts and a bunch of other app redesigns.

I'll take it. Get on with your life, find a job, focus on other things. iOS 12 will make my life easier, better with more improved features (performance alone is worth it). It's fine. You want changes? Go buy an android, they have breaking features every new release.

My remark is related to contributors and their useless comments. It is not about iOS.

I just watched a video showing iOS 12 and the tuber said that Apple still has not fixed the Large Volume Icon in the middle of the screen when you turn the volume up or down. REALLY? Why in the world is this not fixed? It's been the same large obtrusive icon for the past 8 years or more. I hate it!!

For it to be "fixed" it would have to be actually broken. It sounds like Apple seems to believe that it's working as designed essentially, or if they do think something can be done, then for whatever reason Apple hasn't prioritized it to spend time on modifying it.

I think it’s obvious what I meant of course it’s not broken it works but it’s a very poor design that has lasted too long. Didn’t this appear on the iPhone 4 and 4s?
Fixed=Enhanced

I like the current unlock process for the X. All criticism aside for counting how many steps it actually takes.

Sure there are times that I wake my phone with a specific task in mind and having to swipe up on the screen is an extra step.

But especially with the improvement in notifications, I want to see how I adapt to the new lock screen. Most times when I pick up my phone, I want to see what I have missed, because my phone is almost always in silent mode. With the previous phones, I would unlock the phone by pressing the home button. The fingerprint sensor was so fast that the phone was on the home screen before I could see the lock screen making it useless to me.

I would rather see each iOS release just be performance, stability enhancements, and the latest apis for development. Then new features and drop as they are ready. It wouldn’t be the whiz bang people are expecting though. The fact they are focusing on better ramping up and down cpu performance on demand was a good enough feature for me. My geekbench score went up by 100 too.

I don’t care if it’s iOS 11.5 or 12. Hell, you can call it iOS 19 if you want because this beta is blazing fast! It’s impressive.

I suspect that moving forward, it’s more likely we may see a tick-tock or even tick-tick-tock cycle. 1 or 2 years of new features, followed by a year off where Apple just focuses on performance improvements. Rinse and repeat.

Though I much prefer your suggestion. Given that Apple has no problems pushing software updates to its users, there’s less pressure to cram everything out on day one.

3. Apple's keyboard needs a huge update yes. And especially in the language department! I truly don't understand how SwiftKey and the likes can support word and even grammar suggestion and be bi- or trilingual, while the Apple keyboard doesn't even support word suggestion on so many European languages. Quicktype only supports 12 languages! 12! SwiftKey, Gboard, etc basically support any language in the world. I really don't understand how they can't get this to work. The keyboard is one of the most import parts of the OS and I haven't touched Apple's keyboard in 4 or 5 years because of it not supporting my language (Dutch). I stopped caring about the Apple keyboard a long time ago.

I totaly agree. It is embarasing that after 12 zears we still missing keyboard prediction for so many languages while we have dictating. For my case Czech language. After those years I would expect Appel would cheer me with Siri support already not with lacking prediction.

My difference is that I use many keyboards and hate those thirdparty as they are usualy slower, tiny letters but mainly they usualy do not allow you to switch directly to other keyboard. Pressing keyboard key does not bring keyboard list but some options. That drives me crazy or mad. So I do not use Swifkey even it is one of well done keyboard and support my language because of hasles to get out of it are not worth.
It is better to use dictating in my language in case situation allowes that.

This was kinda the point. It’s supposed to be 11.5 because it’s a stability release. If they’d gone full on and released a dozen massive deaths we’d be in the same place as last year with iOS being a technical mess.

I welcome this more subtle update if it means my £1000 iPhone X doesn’t freeze every few days because the software is buggy.

And if they'd just released it as 11.5, how many would complain that there was no new OS this year?

I keep hearing people complain about the lack of form factor change and the lack of visual changes to the OS. It's a rectangular slab of glass that displays icons to press. there is only so much you can change.

I am not much familiar with the jailbreak scene but will a jailbreak be out for iOS 12? I want to try it out on one of my spare phones.

Jailbreaks usually come out about 4-6 months after the main release. Sometimes as early as January/Feb, sometimes as late as July/August. That's been the trend the last 5-6 years anyway, but everything depends on the devs and hackers working on exploits. It's usually just individuals working on it as a hobby.

There isn't a 12 jailbreak currently, but there has been word of a potential exploit already, so I would expect a jailbreak as usual, just later on.

You have forgotten that iPhones are used also by people that has problem to handle phone at all big talking about smartphones. So Apple won't do that. Maybe they will make it larger :D

Right. These are real features right now for people who jailbreak. Those screenshots are from people's iPhone home screen. I have a similar tweak on my own phone.

Installed the public beta for a few days and had similar feelings to the OP.

It’s definitely faster all round, which is good but it’s hard to see what makes this a major version release.

I like that they’re doing serious work on speeding up the UI.

Screentime seems curiously under-baked right now. I hope I’m just seeing an early ‘proof of concept’ version.

I haven’t got a X so I can’t see the new emoji...

I guess though, you could say that the reason behind these major releases is ‘marketing’.

For example, like with macOS, you could make an argument that iOS versions since 7 should be point versions of that release (since 7 was such a radical makeover of the UX).

We live in a weird world where every version of macOS since the original 10.0 OS X release have been point versions, whereas every year’s iOS get to be major versions.

Let’s hope that Apple cleans this up in 2019.

I just want incremental improvements to reliability, performance, and functionality. Big wow changes can come in point releases, with the APIs to use them well ironed out and available to developers in advance.

I have installed the beta and the it actually feels pretty stable but it also feels almost exactly like iOS11, it is probably so stable as it is iOS11 with a some minor tweaks and improvements rather than a full blown new OS (IMO). It is only little things like swiping up on the X to close apps (which I keep forgetting!) and the notifications that point to it being a new OS. Other than the password feature which when it lands will be awesome.

I am massively underwhelmed and it really feels like Apple do no innovate like they used to, in so many areas iOS is falling further and further behind Android and the things that still irk me in iOS12 are:

1. Still no ability to customise your home screen (icon position and size) Even allowing the icons to wrap from the bottom rather than the top would be an improvement, but no it looks like we have another 12 months of every iPhone screen looking the same

2. No always on display.

3. Other than force touch cursor swipe the keyboard still falls way behind Android. Why do apple continue to block really useful things like long press for symbols for example? Totally baffles me

4. No dark mode. This is no biggie really for me but it would look awesome if the iPhone X had it.

5. Animoji and Meemoji. Honestly they feel pointless but locking them to iMessage only just seems daft. Allowing people for example to share them via whatsapp or social networks would open them up to a wider audience and I'd bet would tempt some android users to switch too.

6. Would have liked them to reduce face unlock from a 3 or 4 stage process to 1 or 2. Currently You have to pick your phone up, wake the screen, wait for the unlock symbol and then swipe. I have found it very reliable but there is no doubt that it is significantly slower than a FPS.

7. AR??? Does anybody honestly really care about this? For me that was an embarrassing watch at WWDC

1,2 and 3 remain my biggest beefs if they fixed them I’d live with the rest but whilst I have an iPhone, Android continues to be daily driver now and looks like it will be for another 12 months at least. The longer I do this the more I move away from Apple’s services, I now use Google for contacts, Calendar and photos, I have cancelled Apple music too. 3 years ago I was a 100% apple guy all in, now I am not and if windows was not so terrible I’d also be considering other options to my Mac too.

Maybe some other stuff will land with the next iPhones? But I feel more and more like Apple is run by a bunch of uncool Dads who think they know what is cool but really don’t, and I say that as an uncool Dad myself! Definitely feels like new blood is needed in senior positions at Apple.

YMMV and thoughts welcome.

Do you have a iPhone? You seem more like a android troll. All the things mentioned are cheap gimmicks that seem more on the android side.
AR is still in its infancy. Give it time just like everything else. Ones apps become better and developers become more creative you won’t be saying this. I remember people complaining about the fingerprint, faceid and other things than to later love it. Of course this is not everyone but the majority loved them
[doublepost=1532699747][/doublepost]
Thought that was only for iPod users (when it used to be $10 until v3 or v4). Pretty sure iOS updates were always free for iPhone users...
At one point when iOS first came out they would charge for updates. Later on they made them free
