I almost wonder with this upgrade.....is Apple slowly just waiving the white flag on the Mini?

It does seem like it doesn't it... I look at it two ways, iPad mini is a threat to the big brother iPad Air and the iphone 6+... It's the Cinderella of apple devices and apple is the evil stepmom.

There isn't a lot of cannibalization with Apple products when it comes to different products. The iPad and iPhone are 2 different products.

There's more cannibalization within a single product category.
I probably won't upgrade my iPad mini 1 for the 3, but I'll probably upgrade to the Air, seems more promising.

I'll probably give my iPad mini to my mom.

That's the thing too.. They probably wanted people to buy the air 2 more. Learned from their lesson last year where mini cannibalize air sales.

There seems to be no reason to get the mini anymore, at least for me.
It wasn't dramatically updated, it makes it an underdog. I know I'm not getting the best of the best flagship iPad, so I'll just fall for what Apple wants me to do and just get the air.

is this even true? Which innovation(s) (plural) are we referring to here besides touch ID?

Perhaps, but I used the Plus and it isn't really as comfortable or effective as the Mini in tablet operations. In fact, the Mini is comfortable while the Plus is prone to cramping.

Why would they kill off something that has "100 percent user satisfaction" like they harped in the keynote?

I really just think they're going to use the Mini as the "budget line" for more casual users even if the screen size is the ideal tablet size for nearly all situations. Based on this keynote, I can assume that the Mini will be one year behind the Air in terms of upgrades.

The chip in the current Mini is still good — it's the RAM and general lack of discussion points about it that bugged me about the demonstration. Why wouldn't the Mini get the "portable picture" updates like the Air?

It was sort of disrespectful the way they breezed through it like they were ashamed of it. they should have just said "same crap, touch id" it was pretty much what they were getting at

They don't have confidence in this product. you shouldn't buy it.

I know right... They snuck it in there ninja style

iPad Mini 3? More like iPod Touch 5s Plus Plus (A7 chip and touch-ID)

Haha iphone 6 plus plus

----------

There is quite a bit of overlap in the iPhone 6+ and the iPad mini, so it makes sense to compare them.

Agreed. I think the issue is which market will both rule.. The iPad mini stepped in the ipad 9.7' territory last 2 years and apple didn't want that to keep going. The iPad 6 plus stepped into the mini's market and apple wanted it to happen. See the pattern?

Very true. I think perhaps it's also recognition on Apple's part that the 6 Plus inevitably will cannibalize much (perhaps even most) of the user base that bought the Mini.

By focusing on the Air (and soon the iPad Pro), Apple can differentiate tablets from iPhones by giving the tablets capabilities like more powerful SoC's and [useful] split-screen multi-tasking. Once they have a 12.9" iPad Pro on the market, the Mini will be sitting in an awkward middle-ground.

It's also nearly impossible for Apple to keep up the margins that they want to get on tablets from the mini while keeping its performance and feature set on par with the Air.

For the first time, there's a large performance gap between the iPad (Air 2) and the new iPhones of the same year. I like this move quite a bit because I wanted the mobility of the iPhone 6, but the bigger screen of the 6 Plus for home use. The Air 2 now trumps the iPhones in every way for the things that I wanted the 6 Plus for.

Why do people still compare the iPhone to the iPad. TWO different devices!

Clearly, you don't both or perhaps neither, so I'll let you in on a secret, they're actually TWO very similar devices. Other than the actual making and receiving of phone calls, they are functionally identical in almost every other way. If you disagree, please explain how they differ, and size isn't a function.

I'm not the poster of that comment, but the screen size is still substantially different when it comes to reading and browsing.

It's also wider, and browsing websites and reading in 4:3 is preferable to browsing widescreen on a less-wide panel.

I'm not saying they're totally different ideas, but there are still different use cases for them. I didn't find the Plus very comfortable or efficient after two weeks of use, while the Mini is one of the best devices I have in my life. It replaces a television. The Plus, while big, couldn't really be *as* good as the Mini when it comes to browsing, watching, and reading. It's still a phone variant while the iPad is still, well, an iPad that has those exclusive apps. It might change in the future, but for now, this is how it is.

I own the Mini 2 and the 6 Plus and they are quite similar. Sure one is obviously bigger, but with the iPad Nano interface on the Plus, the iPhone has never been more like an iPad. I find myself never reaching for my Mini any more because the Plus screen is big enough that watching a video or browsing the web isn't significantly worse than the Mini. With the latest update, the 6 Plus is faster than the latest Mini 3. My wife is going to get my Mini (she is still on an iPhone 5) and I'll probably pick up an Air 2 if it gets more RAM. Otherwise I'm going to hold off, maybe for an iPad Pro or something that I can draw on and do image editing.

Of course apple marketing crippled the iPad mini3!
With the new ios8.1and continuity and an older iPhone, the iPad mini3 would just be a very cheap iphone6 plus.

It's just stupid, because I wanted to replace my old iPad 2. I found the iPad size too big. But I hate the thought of the iphone6 plus. So the mini seemed perfect!

Stupid Apple marketing, they are getting way too cocky.

Yeah, I agree. There is a difference between 6 Plus and rMini, but it's not a dramatic one by any means. I previously took my rMini out of the house a lot, it was a massive improvement on using my 5S extensively, but since the 6 Plus I feel little reason too. The Mini is still nice to use around the house, but if the iPad becomes predominantly a toy for in the house, an Air/Air 2 serves that purpose much better. May be tempted by an Air 2 but ONLY if it has 2gb RAM.
