If you disagree, please explain how they differ, and size isn't a function.

Browsing, it's desktop vs mobile view - less of an issue with responsive web design, but still. Magazines, comics and manga are all doable on the Mini, not so the 6 Plus.

Like I said earlier in this thread, there's less reason for me take the Mini out with me since getting the 6 Plus, but the Mini is undoubtedly a better experience for the above use cases.

It does seem like it doesn't it... I look at it two ways, iPad mini is a threat to the big brother iPad Air and the iphone 6+... It's the Cinderella of apple devices and apple is the evil stepmom.

I see more people with minis than anything tbqh.

The iPhone 6 plus is a joke device, useful only for those who carry handbags! Even my wife (who does carry a handbag) says it's far too big.

So for me the mini is VASTLY superiour. It still contains metal, it still has a better pixel screen, it's geekbench is not far behind the 6... In fact can someone tell me how the 6+ is better apart from the fact it is newer and shinier. For the actual stats are minimal. Both can't fit in a pocket - only the mini can justify that - it's not a mobile phone.

This is great for those who have the mini 1! It means they can upgrade to the mini 2 for a great discount losing only Touch ID.

What on earth are you talking about? The 6 Plus has been in and out of my pocket with no issues since launch day. I like my rMini, but the screen is categorically better on the 6 Plus. Lower res yes, but higher ppi, better colour gamut, more viewable in bright light, closer to the touch input.

My theory is that the iPad Mini sales really bombed with the ipad air. The mini 1 made alot of sense, because both iPad 3 and 4 were really heavy and kind of tiresome to carry.

But the air is really thin, and lightweight and the big screen just gives you so much more productivity. I think the iPad mini kind of gets eaten from two sides: The iphone 6 plus and the Air. Plus the lower pricepoint does not give them alot of flexibility for technological innovations.

I would not be surprised at all, if Apple decided to phase out the Mini over time.

Lol not sure how to respond to this.

Yup. Stinks of a combination of "it's not aimed at me therefore it sucks" and "egads! There's hw out there that's better than my still great hw! Engage envy glands, commence attack!".

To which I can only think, grow up.

I know, neglecting the mini for a significant update just shows

On the flip side, the IPad Mini got a significant update last year. You cannot expect apple to make major updates every year. With that said, I don't think you can even say its a minor update given what apple chose to do.

right.. the ipad mini got a HUGE upgrade last year. specwise neck and neck to the Air. I guess lightning doesn't strike twice. they really screwed up the people wanting the mini. then again, they are offering last years model cheaper. AND.. the 64gb mini 3 version is cheaper since they removed the 32gb and slapped the same price.

I think it just boiled down to the margins. Apple was no doubt making lower margins on the Mini by selling it for $100 less with identical specs to the iPad Air. So this time around they decided to offer specs that matched the price point in order to increase their margins.

For me an iPhone 6+ couldn't replace the Mini. It's too small for most books, it still gets the mobile view of websites, and it doesn't have iPad apps that are optimized for it. Plus it's a phone but too big to carry around in the pocket. I put my iPad Mini in a bag but wouldn't want to do the same with my iPhone.

I don't get it. It would seem pretty easy for Apple to swap out the chip for an A8X. Maybe they are just pushing the more expensive iPad Air 2 and dont't want to hurt iPhone 6 Plus sales.

No cannibalization happening now.

Similar to how the iPod Touch is, Apple will probably keep the iPad Mini at least one generation behind the iPhone. The iPad Mini will get an A8 next fall when the iPhone gets an A9.

It has more to do with the iPhone 6+.

Why do people still compare the iPhone to the iPad. TWO different devices!

Yes, but their functionality is extremely similar. Take away the calling function of the iPhone and what do you have? A small iPad. Conversely, the iPad is just a glorified iPod touch, wouldn't you agree? I remember thinking just that when the very first iPad came out.

And given the cellular capabilities of the iPad, you can still use messaging and there are calling apps. Extremely similar devices.

Seriously? Because I think a mobile phone that can't fit in my pocket it absurd I need to grow up? Wow.....

For me devices are FUNCTIONAL, this means my phone, my ipad they need to have a factor that suits the function. An ipad mini, for instance is lighter and smaller which means it is useful when I am preaching to hold. It uses a chip that is powerful enough to run the apps with no issue (same apps run on an a5 still after all). An iPhone for me first has to be mobile, which means it must fit in my pocket comfortably and cause no movement restrictions. That is not possible with the 6+ (I'm not convinced it will be even with the 6!). To point that out is not immaturity, it is first expressing an opinion which surely we are all allowed to do? And secondly pointing out a logical flaw with the functionality of a 'mobile' device - unless we all carry man bags (and we sure don't in the uk!!).

I planned to upgrade to a Mini 3 with decent specs (A8, thinner, lighter, even better screen), but not to this hugely disappointing iPad Mini Cinderella.

No iPhone6+ for me (too small and wrong aspect ratio) and no iPad Air 2 for me (too big). Zero margin for Apple this time...

I'm glad the mini didn't get that much of a change, because I have the 2nd gen mini on a 24month cellular deal that is only 6 months in

For me the iPhone6 plus is too big, I wouldn't consider it as a possible phone to buy. So I will probably go for the 6 when the deals are a bit better, therefore there is a decent difference between a iPhone6 and a iPad mini. The iPad air is too close to a 13" laptop.

Yeah, I agree. There is a difference between 6 Plus and rMini, but it's not a dramatic one by any means. I previously took my rMini out of the house a lot, it was a massive improvement on using my 5S extensively, but since the 6 Plus I feel little reason too. The Mini is still nice to use around the house, but if the iPad becomes predominantly a toy for in the house, an Air/Air 2 serves that purpose much better. May be tempted by an Air 2 but ONLY if it has 2gb RAM.

Yeah it's not drastic enough, and I've always had a big iPad until last November, so I think it's time to switch back unless it has 1GB of RAM. I can't knowingly buy a device that I would keep for several years that would struggle on future software updates (iOS 10, 11) because of a silly limitation on only one part of the system.

Perhaps, but I used the Plus and it isn't really as comfortable or effective as the Mini in tablet operations. In fact, the Mini is comfortable while the Plus is prone to cramping.

Why would they kill off something that has "100 percent user satisfaction" like they harped in the keynote?

I really just think they're going to use the Mini as the "budget line" for more casual users even if the screen size is the ideal tablet size for nearly all situations. Based on this keynote, I can assume that the Mini will be one year behind the Air in terms of upgrades.

The chip in the current Mini is still good — it's the RAM and general lack of discussion points about it that bugged me about the demonstration. Why wouldn't the Mini get the "portable picture" updates like the Air?

Yup. Exactly what I've been saying. Which is why whenever I get a new iPad it will always be the 9.7 in the future. I don't want the old tech in my tablet a year late.

It was the impression I got from your og post, this universal truth (apparently) that a 6 Plus can't fit in a pocket, you need a bag to carry it etc.

"The iPhone 6 plus is a joke device, useful only for those who carry handbags! Even my wife (who does carry a handbag) says it's far too big."

Again, I don't know what on earth you're talking about, I'm a completely average proportioned 5' 10'' male who wears "normal" trousers, and I've been storing my 6 Plus w/ Apple leather case in my front left pocket when not in use since launch ( and no bends :).

I've much less issue (apart from this apparent need for man bag - nope, never have, never will) with your second post as quoted above as you make it clear it's not right for you. I understand that, but the notion that the 6 Plus is THAT big is absolutely ludicrous and bold statements like in your first post, like I said, made me wonder if you were falling into that tired old trap of "it's not for me, therefore it's rubbish/useless" which is an all too recurrent mindset amongst some people unfortunately.

To me it's just too big, and that's why its a joke device. Back in the day in the uk, we had a show where a comedian would get a phone call and pull out this massive phone (bigger than the 6+) and proceed to yell down it. It was comedic exaggeration on the antisocial nature of some with phones but now it reflects the sheer size they are becoming as well.

I just can't buy into the bigger is better mindset unless it's chocolate! I have to say I generally wear jeans and there is the odd pair where my iPhone 5 struggles (and believe me I do not do tight jeans just normal!).

This is why I am anti plus, I don't see it as functional for mobile.

Fair enough.

BTW I'm from sunny Mancunia, and actually saw Dom Joly in Liverpool once, sans huge mobile though :)

The iPhone 6+ is double the price of an iPad mini.

Perhaps that makes the comparison a little unfair?!

Ach that was the best part of his act too, that Nokia ring tone is still popular here today.

Why do people still compare the iPhone to the iPad. TWO different devices!

Fair enough - if you have the budget/ or have someone else paying to support purchasing separate 5.5" and a 7.9" devices. But, if you are in a position buy only one device - comparisons are involuntary. And Apple is clearly pointing out what they think is the right option.
