You're really saying that a power button you touch maybe once a month is anywhere near the same as keyboard switches you must use literally thousands of times every time you type anything at all? OK man!

It's official. You have to lift up the mini to turn it on

If, on the other hand, an eraser or something gets stuck under your mini, the slightest press on the top will turn it on or off.
You'd have to expose the bottom for better airflow so the power button would be in the correct position.

I shut down my Mini every night, and flip off the power to the surge suppressor, too.
I'll even shut off the Mac if I'm going out for a couple of hours.
Same with my MacBook Pro 14".

I've done things that way since my first computer back in '86 (Apple //c).
Old and grey now, and I'll be doing it until "the end".
Don't assume that everyone behaves and believes as you do.
I'm thinking that if I get a 2024 m4pro Mini, I'll set it "on its side", "server-rack-style".
May custom-make a "cradle" for it to sit in on the desk...

The internal fan is a moving part, and probably not designed to be operated upside down for longer periods of time, not to mention the internal air flow.
I would assume that the thermal design expects the top of the case to participate in heat dissipation, so I wouldn’t place it directly against an also-hot display with that side. The bottom side, on the other hand, effectively serves as a spacer.
I shut down my work laptop at the end of every day, so must use the power button to turn it back on.
Yes, I agree with you. Everyone uses their computers differently.
I like what I've seen about the new mini so far and may be buying one, but I agree it's a bad design choice. I think they easily could've made it so that it was underneath but not right on the bottom so you could just reach the underside of it and do it without lifting it

In breaking news Apple has issued an apology for the misleading promotional images of the new mac mini. Aparantly a staff member in marketing accidently flipped the images while using the new usb-c magic mouse. The story goes that the battery ran out so they plugged it in to charge, but not wanting to wait and miss the deadline, they were using the mouse tethered while charging when the mistake occured.
The correct image of the device is as follows with the power button on top for easy access and top vents to allow for better heat dissipation and cooling. This is achieved with minimal use of the fan by utilising convectional currents to lower power use. An Apple spokesperson stated;
"We are very sorry for this mixup and confusion. Apple is commited to lowering power use even when devices are in use.... our aim is to please the power concious users and affirm our green stance... Now you can easily press the power button when walking away from the desk, even for 5 minutes, to enjoy maximum power savings... and you can enjoy up to 2.7x less power use over the M2 Mac Mini's cooling solution, even under heavy loads"

If this is really making someone not buy this absolute bargain (finally) of a device, then you really didn’t want a Mac Mini that bad. I can’t wait to get one.
The power button is the biggest dealbreaker I've ever come across in computing. What were they thinking?
Just tested on old M1 Mini WITH Satechi dock. I can lift them both together with one finger. I mean, I have been working out quite a bit.
If the logo was the power button, wouldn't my cats turn the Mac mini on/off when they walk on it?
No power button might actually work, as long as there's some way to shut it down when the system freezes. I think with the Apple TV, you have to pull the power cord. That's not really ideal.
This was the really bad placement for it, IMO, right next to the power cord. About half the times when I needed to disconnect the powercord, I would unintentionally touch the button and turn the damned thing on. Pretty annoying when I'm in the process of disconnecting/packing it for travel etc.
