I like your thinking, what will you use both for?

Or how about Apple release one size iPad, problem solved ?

I had both back in 2017 and I've mentioned it in other threads, but I tended to use the smaller one way more often, but where I did use the 12.9 was when I was gigging and needed to read sheet music and also when I was creating art as well as doing things like editing in LumaFusion. Day to day I definitely used the smaller one more and when I traveled I use the smaller one typically.

In this case I'll do the same thing (once things go back to normal and can gig again... eventually). The 11-inch is my main one which is why I got it in 512GB w/cellular, I just got the base model 12.9. The screen on the 12.9 is drastically better when watching HDR so I'll probably use it for that as well.

Complete and total excess I know, but I don't really have any other hobbies that cost much money, debts are paid, etc etc - so screw it. In the worst case I'm sure I can sell one of these quite easily without losing too much money.

I will say one thing for sure:

I had the white Magic Keyboard Case with the 11 but since I'll be using the 12.9 as more of a "desktop" style iPad I swapped it and got the black one for the 12.9

The black one gets dirty WAAAAAAAAAAAY easier. After a few days my white one was still completely pristine but my black one is already showing smudges and I made sure to clean my hands before even touching anything! This black one picks up oils crazy easy.

Sometimes the best size is more than one, for different uses. Kind of like a desktop and a laptop ...

This is why I'm waiting on a less bezel-y iPad Mini. I've had the original 12.9" Pro (HUGE), 9.7 Pro, then 11" Pro. I love the 11" Pro, but drawing more, I'm going to size back up to the 12.9" again. For travel, though, I'd love an iPad Mini to take along that can use a Pencil, but the bezels just look so dated to me at this point. Fingers crossed :)

I don't want both because then I will end up using one more than the other, thus making that other one a huge waste of money. Buy one and you are forced to use it.

True enough. Like I mentioned earlier, I did have both 2017 Pros and you're right, I did use the 10.5 more so the 12.9 was a waste of money. That being said, when I used the 12.9 for the things I used it for it was reaaaaaaally nice to have! I didn't have to compromise on the 10.5 for what the 12.9 excels at.

But I will 100% agree with you, I am throwing money away.

You could set one - the 12.9 - up as a pseudo-desktop with a Magic Keyboard (or stand with BT keyboard, even a mouse) and a hub with peripherals attached, e.g. drives and perhaps a monitor. The other is separate and portable, much as you might use a desktop and a laptop. But with a few disconnects, that pseudo-desktop also becomes portable. Just a different use paradigm. Nobody criticizes having a desktop and a laptop - why with two iPads?

That's basically exactly what I'm doing hah. The 12.9 sits on my desk and has effectively become a laptop replacement (also bonus, I'm still using a 7 year old MBP so I haven't had to buy a laptop in awhile... money saved! :) )

The 10.5 is in my bedroom. Maybe I should keep an iPad Mini in every other room in the house so I don't have to expend energy carting these things around! (I kid, I kid).

I tend to kill battery life within one year if I do this (but of course Apple diagnostics still report battery is healthy). Hence, it’s useful to me to switch between iPads.

I just tend to upgrade the different sizes on alternate years.

Lol, I actually have enough older iPads to do this (OG Air/iOS 9, mini 4/iOS 10, Pro 9.7/iOS 13). Keep them for running old/abandoned apps.

I used to have an iPad 4/iOS 6, too, but had to upgrade that to iOS 10 due to GPS bug so traded it in this year when I saw Best Buy was still offering $70 for it. Seems crazy trade-in’s that high considering how slow it is now.

Also got 3 current design 12.9s at the moment all within their return period. :p

2018 12.9 1TB LTE Apple certified refurb $1180
2020 12.9 1TB LTE Amazon open-box $1190 (scratch on chassis :()
2021 12.9 1TB 5G Apple $2000

Still trying to decide which one to keep. Leaning towards the 2021 as long as it doesn’t trigger my migraines again.

My new M1 12.9 is finding its place mostly on the desktop using a real keyboard and mouse. I turn it to portrait when using it as a kindle textbook reader for my Japanese studies because books here are a small form factor with tiny characters that are hard to read. And then I’m using it for writing practice with the pencil , as well as sketching.

Selling the 2015 MBP. I’ll sell the iPhone XS and get an iPad mini for night time surfing when the new ones come out. Perhaps an additional one for the coffee table for streaming music and miscellaneous.

I have both sizes as well (2018 model). I will be upgrading both, but am holding off to decide on what configuration depending on what is announced at the dev conference.

I use the different sizes for very different things though the primary thing is to test our companies mobile apps on the different sizes - but I’d have both even if I didn’t do that.

Haha since the 2018 revision the physical size difference is less for the 11-inch and 12.9-inch since the 12.9-inch is shrunken in size. You know I had the 2015 first 12.9 inch iPad Pro and that things was really big. So now the 12.9 inch makes more sense to me. So due to the same reason keeping both doesn’t seem to bring any extra value to me.

Strange that people need reassurance that they made the correct choice. I want a 15-16 inch "desktop" iPad and it will for sure not be best fit in all situations!
