Oh My God, I have been dealing with this for 6 months. I've tried everything. This worked. Thank you for sharing the fix. I know this is an old thread but it should be stickied.

Yay! So glad it's working for you again. I know this was SO frustrating.

I FINALLY figured out what was going on. After digging around countless threads, I found this simple answer. This fixed my problem. Wow.

Sure, I'm digging up an old thread - sue me. THANK YOU for highlighting this solution. I ran into the same problem today and it was driving me up the wall. This was the solution. All the best!

Same where is find services on windows 10?
Please can you assist and explain how / where to find the Library>Application support>Sync Services ?
Sorry not really computer-clever. I am working on a desktop windows 10 with up-to-date iTunes, and ipod classic 160GB freezes itunes as soon as it's plugged in.
Thank you.

Hmm, unfortunately I don't think I can be of much help since you're running Windows. I think the file structure is probably a little different. Perhaps do a search for your problem on a Windows machine.

Windows users! I found the offending folder!
Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple and rename "Mobile Device Support" to "Mobile Device Support_old" (I just did this instead of deleting it in case it didn't work).
Next I went to Task Manager and killed "iTunes" and "iPod Service," unplugged my iPad, replugged it and launched iTunes. My iPad immediately showed up, and the iTunes Preferences window no longer takes five minutes to open. Hallelujah!

Edit: I don't seem to be able to add music to the device, even if I check "manually manage music on this device." So we're only part of the way there. We might have to find the exact file in that folder that's causing an issue.

Fixed!

Noticing that iTunes hadn't created a new "Mobile Device Support" folder to replace the one I renamed, I decided to delete the folder, then uninstall and reinstall iTunes.

This time when I plugged in the iPad, it said I needed to install the driver for it, pointing me to this page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204095?&cid=acs::fm-itunes_HT204095-306640
So I closed iTunes, unplugged and replugged the iPad, right clicked the Start button, went to Device Manager > Portable Devices, right-clicked on the iPad and clicked Update Driver > Search automatically, and the driver was updated. Before reinstalling iTunes, the iPad had shown up in "USB devices" instead of "Portable Devices." Now when I open iTunes, I can finally sync music to the iPad!

Note that iTunes still never created a new "Mobile Device Support" folder. Perhaps the drivers there were conflicting with newer ones elsewhere.
