I have to say, after reading these stories AND seeing all the headaches my wife has been going through with AppleID authentication issues on her devices, it really just further convinces me to AVOID cloud based or subscription based options wherever possible.

Microsoft is quickly headed down the same path as Apple here, with Windows 10 wanting to use a universal login/password, data stored on "Skydrive", etc. So I'm not just pointing the finger at Apple here.

But in general, the convenience you get with device configuration, tracking and data backup in the cloud using a single login has an ugly flip-side. Your devices and data aren't really "yours" anymore. You're stuck relying on a single company's services to authenticate you every time you wish to work with it.

Right now, she's been going through an issue where her relatively new iPad Air 2 stops syncing her content. Apple Music suddenly decides she's never been set up yet on it, despite the fact she was just logged in with her paid account 15 minutes earlier on it, and all of her cloud based music, including content tagged to download for offline listening and custom playlists vanishes. She's done everything support suggested, including a total wipe/restore... Only fixes things for 20 minutes or so and then it acts up again. Might just be defective hardware? But really makes one wonder if iCloud just has something corrupt too.
