How about a case for the case that clips to your keys.
Which also has a tile clipped to the keys.
Next problem?

I was thinking the very same thing!
A thin leather cover with a mini carabiner or split ring to attach to keyring.

I don't carry any keys. Just the key fob for my truck.

Some people have chronically bad short-term memory, such as myself. It's not a matter of responsibility, or lack thereof, that makes people forget. Stress, brain injury, or simply being interrupted at the wrong moment can make people forget basically anything. Like taking your kid out of the car baby seat and handing over to daycare before driving off to work and parking the car in the sun all day long.just reflects a lack of proper responsibility.
You use the same fob to lock the front door to your home too, or do you lock the door from the inside, then squeeze your way out through the cat flap?I don't carry any keys. Just the key fob for my truck.
Not the AirPods themselves, but the charging case.

I'd ground him.
Try being more responsible. Fixes a lot of problems.
That would certainly solve a lot of problems in this country. But it's easier for people to blame others for their issues. It's like when people buy a big car and complain about parking in cities. Or when someone buys a coach plane ticket and complains they don't have much leg room.
So if the blame lay with Apple, what would the OP like to see? A bigger case? Yeah, he's alone there. A belt clip? Have fun with that.

There comes a point where you have to put on your big boy pants and have a bit of responsibility for yourself. If your memory is so bad that you can't remember where you put the charging case moments earlier on a regular basis, how do you remember where you parked your car? Do you have to have a GPS tracker to find your car? And what do you do if you forget where your phone is? Do you really think it's a good idea to be driving when you have these constant memory lapses? Seems like a safety issue the DMV in your state should know about.
Yep, time for the mods.
The fob has a key ring hole. Attach the AirPods via that using a small leather pouch. I've done that with my C Class.I don't carry any keys. Just the key fob for my truck.

Most people exit their house through the garage door, and most don't lock that door between the garage and the house. At least I sure don't. If I'm taking public transit for the day- I still exit through the garage door and close the door with the PIN pad mounted to the door jamb. Every house in my neighborhood has a PIN pad for their garage door--still no keys. Ironically I still take my car keys with me (and attached AirPods now) when taking public transit for the day. Force of habit to have them with me I guess. Some people have chronically bad short-term memory, such as myself. It's not a matter of responsibility, or lack thereof, that makes people forget. Myself I can forget most anything; not keys or wallet thankfully (so far anyway); I am rather firmly attached to those - as am I to my head or else I'd probably lost that too somewhere, more than once most likely. I've forgotten loads of other stuff however, a Polar exercise watch at the gym and multiple gym pants too, a nice leather backpack from Crete on a tram, multiple umbrellas...
If I don't forget stuff when I'm out, I forget them at home. Like back when you paid your bills in person at the bank or post office, you go into the city to do your monthly errands and all your bills stayed behind even though you put them right next to your friggin shoes so you'd absolutely remember to bring them? Yup, that was me.
