im no tech savy kinda person but the idea OF VIDEO CHAT is awe dropping. i have skyped with a few girls, as we all split for college, they Tripped when i got them hooked on it. They loved it. The only reason people do not video message YET is because it is not a standard yet. And yes vedeo chat would not be something used in every situation. Thats why they have text messaging on a phone.....same ****.....the idea of callling somebody and being able not only to imagine there world BUT SEEING it weather it is a drawing or helping on ALGEBRA is awesome. I dont really understand the complications of a server handeling this but alot of things are being uniform each and everyday for ease of making it work. People are already starting to leave video messages on facebook to friends when were all at college.......mainly girls really to girls!! Who knows I think Facebook will be the hub for video chant in the future. So y are they not doing it YET? I say yet guys because technology only advances so do say ******** liek this will not happen...if it can it will! The reason is because you just or your frind just when out and bought the 3GS for 300....APPLE is a bussiness first. They can make a **** ton of money bc ppl are willing to buy a minnor upgrade for alot of cash. This is why u have had 3 ipods and had to have the NEW one everytime. were all hooked..thats ok..apple knows this and will waite a little longer( after most everybody (who will buy a iphone) has one). and thats even saying if they cant (which im shure they can) come up with something that captures our eye that we must have before video. The carries already sell wireless pc cards theres money there thats not the reason. I am right And u will see this happen eventually i for one hope soon.. idk **** about the technology behind but i can damn see the future

iChat iPhone has been my dream iPhone from day 1. I'm hoping for next year.

My husband sent me an email saying "There is an article today in USA Today about how the iPhone is crushing the ATT network. This is why they haven’t released video chat. Apple could do it, but the network wouldn’t handle it. Maybe 2011 when the next gen network is fully deployed."

I've not read that article. Just pegging hopes for next year.
I'd be happy if it only worked via Wifi. I'll take anything.

I agree with the OP, and I think this is the last big feature missing from the iPhone.

I predict that the next big upgrade to the iPhone will be a forward facing camera, along with an iChat application. :)

Eh, I don't need a front facing camera on my phone, but i'll be nice, but definitely not needed. The US isn't ready for this. We all know AT&T isn't, lol. They can't even get MMS and tethering working properly, and their 3G network is umm.

Video conferencing/chatting is so on the bottom of my want list. Seriously. I still don't get why anyone wants this?

Video conferencing has been around on landlines for a loooooooooong time, like since the late 70s and 80s. Guess what, NO ONE USES IT.

Video conferencing/chatting has been around on cellphones for a while too. Guess what, NO ONE USES IT.

I'd MUCH MUCH rather have real multitasking than video conferencing.

Advanced phone feature? Give me a break.

I honestly can't think of a reason I would need to engage in video chatting on a mobile phone. If a co-worker needs to show you something while on the phone, have them email it to you, the screen is so small anyway. Sure, mobile video conferencing may be "the future", but to me right in the present, it still seems gimmicky.

you're right about that one, but one good thing is talking to friends who are out of the country..
I have a lot of friends overseas and in the middle east which is really expensive to call long distance... i use ichat to talk to them for free..and it's nice to see their faces..some I haven't seen for like 8 years..

anyways..I think it will be available on the next iphone...I hope so anyways...

And here is imho the real fallacy of bringing video conferencing on the iPhone (or any mobile phone), there is *no* way that AT&T would allow apps to do this "for free." It would a) be wifi ONLY (which imho for a communication medium is highly prohibited and limited) and b) IF AT&T allowed video conferencing it would be in a per minute type of situation which again limits your abilities especially with communicated with oversea folks.

Hey all, I've I've wanted iPhone since it came out. I was holding back not to buy it UNTIL it has a iChat in it. So my dream could soon become a reality. Do you know why iChat could be so useful?

It is for those who are hard of hearing or deaf. I'm hard of hearing myself and also rely on lip reading as well. I need to hear both sound and lips movement 50/50 so that I can fully understand the person clearly without any misunderstanding. Also on top of that me and my wife learnt sign language 8 years ago to support the deaf community and I can envision that this iChat can be VERY useful! It will change the whole way of living for those who are deaf and Hard of Hearing. True, video chat on cellphone have existed in the past but reason for not doing well? It was just a crappy and choppy quality. People have lost interested in it. I don't blame them. I can imagine for those who are deaf and hard of hearing would not be happy with them as well. So, enter iPhone that is talking about having a better chip processor, better screen resolution and many other new features to enhance the iPhone, I see a lot of potential here.

In the US, there are Viables, Sorensen, etc... they are known to be videoconferencing services for the deaf. They have invented portable and non portable video tablet just for video conferencing. It's huge, but I think it's just inconvenient to use it. Even Canadians have some restrictions on using them so it's hard to contact anyone in the USA through videoconferencing.

So my point is.. if iPhone comes out with iChat, it will be a breakthrough and imagine deaf calling the interpreter at any location or situation to help them communicate with the hearing person using the iPhone. You can see so much potential here. Using my macbook pro with Skype, it has been great for me to contact people and it does improve the quality of life for everyone that are hard of hearing and deaf. So if iPhones do come out with iChat, then it will definitely boost even more better quality of life in terms of being connected with people and have better accessibility using interpreters to help them to get around.

Those are just my thoughts. I can't wait! If it doesn't come out this year, I believe Apple will do it eventually down the road. In the meantime, I'm happy with my current iPod Touch. :)

Get a damn laptop!
Stop wasting space and add weight to the phone.
Last thing I need to hear on the news is some idiot iChating on the freeway causing a 5 hours delay when they get into an accident.

Good thing there's a law about cell phone ban while driving. Not sure if USA has it, but for sure we have it in BC, Canada.
:D

the thinking is if at&t allowed people to video chat over ichat there would be no need to use their phone minutes. its the same reason carriers dont' wany skype on phones. why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free...
Then why Sprint is doing it this summer with the HTC Evo 4G + Sprints plans are cheaper? If the Apple still wants to make the iPhone the #1 smartphone in the next upcoming years than it should include the front facing camera, because the other companies out there are catching up:eek::D
