Interesting. Two things: Could this possibly be prevented for those with Little Snitch? Wouldn't they see "OSX.Trojan.iServices.A is trying to connect to ##.###.###", and then deny access to it? Also, couldn't this be removed by the user just deleting OSX.Trojan.iServices.A from StartupItems?

Once you put in your admin password during installation almost anything is possible. It could install an executable that would be run by root for example and disable LittleSnitch.

For this case it may be possible to just remove that file, but it could have installed things elsewhere. It could also have overwritten other files. So just diff'ing the file tree might not show everything it did.

crackpip

P.S. I think icemanjc is referring to downloading the package from Apple and using a pirated serial number to activate it.

I bet that half the people saying "get what they deserve" are currently downloading virus removal software to check their torrent! :D

I have nothing to worry about :) But just curious, what's a virus, and what is a trojan? (coming from a Mac user, LOL)

I agree that they should just buy it, but sometimes it just can't be afforded.

Right. And sometimes it just can't be had.

If you wants something, earn it. Don't assume the world exists for your personal pleasure, or the world will show you how untrue that sentiment really is.

Very true. People, if you don't want to buy software, look at the OpenSource community. There is probably a lot you didn't even know was available.

I needed a copy once of Office 2004 for school. OpenOffice wasn't available as of yet and NeoOffice was in the infancy, and I had some problems with it. So I "borrowed" a copy of Office 2004. I bought Office 2004 just a few weeks later.

I'm surprised this hasn't been trumpted even more by Apple. I expect an e-mail shortly....

And to those who bought pirate copies..... you asked for it...

You know, even when you have a Mac and you think you can beat the world wide web with it because you think you will stay virus free- you still got to be careful.

Whoever is downloading the torrent should be pretty dumb.
Who knows, the $80 that could have been spent to buy iWork '09 can turn into hundreds of dollars more for a Mac to be repaired from trojan damage if it is serious.

So anyone know what this trojan actually DOES when it's installed?
Also, I'm wonder if hacked versions of OS/X, found on the internet and used for Hackintosh installs, could have something like this aboard.

There is nothing in /System/Library/StartupItems/iWorkServices.

Does this mean I'm safe?

How can one buy a pirated copy?

You mean download from a torrentz site?

You can buy pirated copies in general, though I'm not sure about iWork '09 in particular. Like a CD/DVD with music/movie/software, which looks like an original one and costs a fraction of the usual price. Sometimes they show on TV news a particularly large amount of pirated CDs being destroyed by authorities somewhere (usually China).

Well it was going to happen sooner or later. As Macs get more popular and it's software (iWork) we will see more like this. Better keep the virus protectors up date and stop downloading illegal stuff. :/

Hugh

This is right up there with people that steal cars complaining about it breaking down and leaving them stranded. I can't really feel sorry for people that get burned stealing something.

Whats more interesting is that 20,000 people have already illegaly downloaded iWork '09 and only from one torrent, i wonder if Apple will spend the resources to neutralise this torrent or risk its reputation.

lol what damage could that possibly be?
reinstall osx?

Apple need to get a Mac S/W App store integrated into iTunes pretty quickly...that way the only excuse for virus or trojans WILL be pirated s/w...
