Does anyone know if Apple is planning to update the iWork apps for Liquid Glass? It seems strange that Apple hasn't given these apps a facelift to the new UI.

I don't know for sure, but certainly expect these apps to be updated for Liquid Glass in the near future. A number of third-party apps (Day One, for example) have been updated recently and now support the Liquid Glass design changes. I think the group responsible for iWorks is separate from the OS group, so they are not always in sync, sort of like the Office people and the Windows people are not in sync; in fact, the Office apps don't even follow Microsoft's own UI guidelines. Used to drive me crazy, but I've switched 100% to Apple so I don't have to deal with Microsoft's nonsense any more.
I'm sure they'll get around to ruining the UI later, but for now I would consider this a feature, not a bug.
I, for one, am hoping we do not have to suffer a "glass" sidebar that becomes illegible when working on a document with a lot of graphic elements.

I do as well. I know a lot of people hate it, but I love it. It's nice enough on my iPhone and iPad, but where I'm really enjoying it is on my iMac. The new Liquid Glass look, the changes to the typography, the extra spacing in menus, the new look of folders in Finder, everything seems refreshed and more modern to me. It's a joy to use every day.
Also waiting for the iWork update. I wonder if apple will include Pixelmator in the suite?

I dont think they will use Pixelmator as an app to add to the "iWork" suite. Most likely, they will integrate the more advanced image manipulation features into the existing Photos app, or come up with some kind of new "Pro" app.
Regarding Pages/Numbers/Keynote, I think that the update delay has something to do with their AI implementation strategy.
They are waiting either for Gemini 3 and announce its integration into the OSes (just like chatGPT) or they delayed the whole suite to reveal a total redesign centered around advanced AI features in March/April 2026 (to coincide with the new Siri AI that they demonstrated in 2024).

I think like other purchases, they bought pixelmator for the technology, not the app, its only been updated once, and it seems largely to be whithering on the vine. I think its still a fantastic app, and still useful, but I don't expect to see apple to keep updating it.
Given the incredibly buggy state of Tahoe right now, I’m thinking they pulled development resources to the upcoming 26.1 updates - which are much better across the board. I’m thinking they might push an iWork update when 26.1 drops next week.
Does it matter? While Liquid Glass was announced as a magical new experience, not just a fresh layer of paint, it’s exactly that: some annoying, distracting superficial bubbles. It has zero value or impact on how one uses these devices.
