Was anyone able to jailbreak this exact model without any files stored on Cydia?

Thank you. I am trying to find out if anyone found, hear or know of a way...

There is no way. I know it's not what you want to hear, but until someone finds a new exploit there is no way to jailbreak a 3GS once it's been upgraded to 3.1.3 unless its SHSHs are on file with saurik. Asking it again won't change that.

And even if there is a known method, I don't think anyone will release it until the next iPhone model comes out in May/June/July.

If they tip their hand, Apple will fix the exploit before the new phone release.

Only exception would be if it only involves slight modifications to already released exploits.

Not what you want to hear, but it is reality.

Sorry! Maybe when 4.0 comes out...

Thelatinist - Where do you get your information? When you say "maybe when 4.0 comes" - What's your source? How do you know if someone is not working on something now?

Do you have any creditials?

The jailbreaking community has a history of waiting to release hacks based on new exploits until a new generation of HW/SW is released, so that Apple can't plug the holes with the new releases.

You don't need any special qualifications to speculate that this may be the case again, just a bit of historical knowledge and common sense. He's not saying this IS the case, just that 4.0's release is the earliest we're likely to see a JB based on a new exploit.

So, if I understand, your assuming you know how he came to the conclusion above?

Anyways - there are so many people saying different things. Too many people saying anything out their A55 without even knowing the facts.

I appreciate everyone's input - Im out of this thread!

Something you are certainly not aware of based on this post, most of the renowned iPhone hackers use methods like Twitter, ICQ, blogs and others to discuss the daily matters pertaining to jailbreaking and unlocking.

Many of us spend some amount of time each day following up on that information to keep informed of these things. In this case, the select group of hackers themselves have said this in the forums I mentioned as well.

So, it's a good thing you are checking out cause I think your last post just burned you from getting much help here !

Just my assumption this time !

No, you don't understand. I do know where he got the information above, because, as dhlizard says, I and many others spend some time keeping up on these things. The point of my post and thelatinist's is that you will almost certainly not see anything based on a new exploit until the next HW/SW revision. This is not some random wild new speculation; it has always been part of the strategy of the various hackers who work on jailbreaks.

Note that this says nothing about the existence of a new exploit, only that if one exists, the community will wait to do anything with it publicly until Apple can't plug the hole in a new phone and/or OS. I'm really not sure why this is so difficult for you to understand, or why you're so angry at people pointing out something that is really quite simple.

Anyways - there are so many people saying different things. Too many people saying anything out their A55 without even knowing the facts.

The reason people like you are confused is because you appear to have no ability to distinguish noise from good information. The fact that you seem unfamiliar with the idea that no tools based on a new exploit would be released until the next HW/SW revision suggests that you're not looking in the right places for your information. There are solutions here besides treating everything with equal skepticism and then throwing your hands up in the air because "It's all so confusing!"

You don't even have to take my or thelatinist's or dhlizard's word for it; I encourage you to go check out the official communications channels (hint: the Dev Team blog > commenters in random forums), and if these sources say anything that contradicts what's been said here, please come back and let us know. I prefer to have accurate information than simply basking in the feeling that I'm right all the time, so I really do like to hear when I'm mistaken about things.

I appreciate everyone's input - Im out of this thread!

You clearly don't appreciate anyone's input, and dhlizard is right that this kind of reaction is going to make it hard for you to get helpful input in the future.

In case anyone cares what I base my opinion on, DHLizard is quite right: I base it on my reading of Geohot's, MuscleNerd's and CPICH's Twitter accounts as well as the Dev Team blog, historical precedent, and common sense. It's not hard to come to the same conclusion I did; it just requires reading and the ability to synthesize information.

Here's my reasoning process:

1) There are two sources of legitimate jailbreaks and unlocks: the Dev Team and Geohot. Sorry, I can't count Chronic Dev until they've actually, you know...released something. And iH8sn0w didn't create any jailbreak...he just ported Dev Team software.

2) Both of these sources have made it clear that they have no intention of creating a jailbreak for 3.1.3. Geohot gives the impression on Twitter that it would not be hard to make at least a tethered jailbreak, but he is not working on the iPhone right now and he has flat out said he's not going to make something that will only help those dumb enough to upgrade without reading first. The Dev Team has already said that they see no point in upgrading to 3.1.3, and they believe that their time is best spent for now porting PwnageTool to Win/Lin. They have also clearly said that they have no intention of creating an unlock until the next major firmware upgrade.

3) Therefore no new jailbreaks until 4.0.

Thanks for Summary!

After looking across the web the last couple of days for any sign of hope, I agree with the final assessment of thelatinist and dhlizard, among others: If you made the fateful click of installing 3.1.3, you're basically skruued until the hackers bring out the big guns ('exploits') for next major OS upgrade, who knows when.

Although I'm kicking myself for losing the capability of my iPhone most important to me, tethering, I'm not going to cry on the boards here over spilled milk, will just wait the wait...

Even as someone who's used Macs since the late 80s (but iPhone only since late summer), I naively thot an upgrade of such a small increment couldn't be a big deal, until I noticed my JB apps had disappeared! (For those of us who don't closely follow iPhone forums/blogs--until now--I thing "naive" is kinder than "dumb.") Now the lesson's learned, and I'll never again take Apple's prompt to upgrade SW without doing the reading first--won't be skruued again!

SO glad I did the reading first by reading this thread, I was going to upgrade mine tonight...phew.

I believe there is also a update fro Itunes aswell (may be wrong I only caught a glimpse of the warning to upgrade before i turned my mac off), this wouldnt have any effect on the iphone if you upgrade the itunes and not the iphone would it??

sorry probably a really silly question

The 9.0.3 iTunes update won't interfere with your jailbroken phone. It is safe.

As you seem to realize, stay well clear of 3.1.3.

What really drives me nuts is the fact that I was forced to upgrade to 3.1.3. I've got a jvc/alpine system I installed in my car, and once 3.1.3 was released, the jvc deck just straight up refused to read my iPhone.

On a separate note however, I'm assuming by what's been said In this thread that the Redmond pie jailbreak for 3.1.3 pre-mc models isn't reliable (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

Also, being kind of a noob (or dumb, whatever) to the jailbreak community, if you guys could toss me a link to the dev team blog, I'd really appreciate it.

-edit: Whoops, just noticed how old this thread is...

Not sure what you mean by "the Redmond pie jailbreak"; they don't make jailbreaking tools...they're a tech news site. They have reported on PwnageTool 3.1.5, though. PwnageTool can be used to create a custom 3.1.3 firmware, which one can use to upgrade a pwned device to 3.1.3 without losing the jailbreak. It does work, but only on phones already jailbroken at a previous firmware.

Wait, so your deck has networking abilities? I don't see how a car stereo has that ability to make sure the iPhone has the most updated firmware according to Apple. What kind of deck do you have? I'm definitely going to steer clear of it
